I built my current PC in 2013, and I've finally decided to upgrade so that I can play Doom: The Dark Ages (requires ray tracing GPU and a newer CPU) and go to Window 11 when Windows 10 updates stop (stupid supported CPU list). I've been able to play basically anything I've wanted to until now, so I've never seen a reason to buy anything new. Over the years, I've added 16 GB of extra RAM, replaced my GTX 760 with a used GTX 980 when it died, and early on I added an SSD boot drive, but those are the only substantive upgrades.

Most of the parts came in Wednesday, and the GPU comes in today, so building will commence tonight!

i7 3770k -> Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Z77 chipset -> X870 chipset
32GB DDR3 -> 32GB DDR5
GTX 980 -> RTX 5070 Ti
SATA SSD -> M.2 NVME SSD
I'll reuse my case and PSU.

I can't believe how much more expensive motherboards and GPUs are now. I just hope my motherboard doesn't kill my CPU and my graphics card power connector doesn't melt (how are these things that actually happen now?).

The motherboard should be fine, Asrock said they fixed it. But b650 is much cheaper, if you needed to save money, they're $50-80 cheaper at the moment than 870.

9700x is really more than you will ever need, the 9800x3d is really only for rich people and "ESP0rts" proz running games in 720p. You won't get that peak performance in 1440p and above. 

You can justify it if you intend to use it for 10 years though.

I went with an MSI motherboard just to be safe. I was originally going to get a B650 to save a few bucks, but I figured I might as well get the slightly better I/O for longevity (probably doesn't matter though).

I kept reading the 9800X3D is overkill unless you're playing at 1080p (which I am currently doing), but, whenever I looked up other CPUs, it read conflicting stuff about productivity vs gaming and single threaded performance vs multicore performance. I've been out of the hardware game so long that I couldn't make much sense of it, so I admittedly just got the best/newest thing as a research shortcut. I also regretted not getting the best CPU (I bought Ivy Bridge when Haswell had just been released) and getting a low end GPU last time.

But yeah, based on my history, I'll probably use this setup for about 10 years.

I have been thinking about a new monitor. I have a 24" Asus 144Hz monitor and two Dell 60Hz monitors from my old job. The only thing I don't like about the Asus monitor is that it gives me SERIOUS eye strain/headaches/nausea in certain games after 30-40 minutes (usually remasters of older games or games that imitate Quake/N64 era graphics), which I think is caused by the anti-blur strobe. But it doesn't cause that at all in more modern (looking) games.

But I have time; I've spent a lot of money already and should wait. I'll be sure to ask for the TP4 stamp of approval before I buy anything.

Hey, congrats man! Nice upgrades, it'll be like night/day for you playing games. I always test my frames with Red Dead 2, even being as old as it is, that game still pushes hardware to the limit and looks great.

I'm currently doing a parallel upgrade path for my current 3770k system: New mobo/psu/gpu/fans+cooler/case
I need to find a good, but low priced, case that can accommodate the Noctua D15S I got which is WAY bigger than I thought it would be.
I'm hoping my upgrade path will at least allow me to play GTA when it comes out.

Nice to see a fellow 3770K enjoyer. I don't know if it will handle GTA or not. Most of the games I play are ~5 years old, and they run decently enough. I saw a video on Youtube where the new Doom just crashed before it could open with a 3770K, so I knew I had to get a new CPU (and to not bottleneck the new GPU).

I have no case recommendations; they have changed a lot from what I'm used to - lots of glass and odd graphics card orientations, but there do seem to be quite a few "regular" cases around the $40-80 range. My case is the Corsair Vengeance C70, which has been discontinued for quite a while (a shame since it's really cool).

That's wild, I'm currently using a Corsair Vengeance C70 in white as well!
Great case but too small for this honker of a cpu cooler sadly. I could run it without a side panel, but that comes with other issues.
Corsair should bring this series back

That's crazy, haha. Mine is black, and my brother has the green one. If Corsair ever brought it back, I'd definitely buy another one.

So far so good with the new computer. Doom: The Dark Ages hasn't really wowed me yet. Doom Eternal was perfect, so it's a tough act to follow. I put off playing Deus Ex Mankind Divided for nine years because it didn't run very well, and now I get ~300 FPS as long as I keep MSAA off, so I'm enjoying that.

Now I'm futzing around with what to do with my old system. I don't have a spare case anymore, so I just ordered a Zalman i3 NEO. I was eyeing the Corsair 5000T, but that thing is expensive, and it would feel weird to put my old system in a new, expensive case. I mainly just want something with an easily removable side panel, and both of these have hinged doors (I detest sliding panels with thumbscrews in the back). I somehow never realized my CPU cooler's mount was pressing on one RAM stick for nine years, so I'm thinking of getting a different cooler and trying to fix the bent/detached heatsink. I don't even know what I'd use it for; I just can't stand usable parts sitting around. *Wasting money, yeah!*
