Scale of Awesome (keyboard version)
« on: Sat, 24 November 2012, 06:41:33 »
Geekhack! Lets play a game, in which we rate our favorite brands in ascending order!

I never owned many keyboards so it wouldnt be right for me to actually rate the quality/build of keyboards that i havent touched yet...
But to those veteran keyboard owners, please drop on by!

Didn't include it as I've barely typed on it.  It's getting rebuilt by another Geekhacker at the moment.  Those Korean keyboards are really a niche, hard to find product...so I made my list strictly readily available boards.

I don't think people are paying attention to the ascending order directive...
Anyway, I'll stick to the major brands... (descending)
Topre (best)
Leopold
Filco
Ducky
The rest...

That isn't to say that I don't think Unicomp, etc. is a good brand, I just don't own them.

  • Noppoo / TypeMatrix
  • Lenovo (well, it's rather NMB that makes thinkpad keyboards)
  • Goldtouch
Unfortunately, it's rather a list of least sucky keyboards. Noppoo Choc Mini (well, probably also the Keycool 84, but I haven't tried it yet), TypeMatrix and thinkpad keyboards are the only keyboards that work for me layout-wise. More or less. If those didn't exist, I'd try to live with the split goldtouch — or just suffer with a random keyboard.

I wish I could put Kinesis in the list, but I can't yet.

I didn't have much time with the keyboards at the Cleverly store in Akihabara but I have a good idea.

1. Filco or Realforce
2. Leopold
3. crappy rubber domes.

So not much...

Assuming all have optimum keycaps for their type...

1. IBM
2. Leopold
3. Filco
4. Better Costar (WASD, etc.)
5. Unicomp
6. Other Costar (Rosewill, etc)
7. Old Apple
8. Old Dell
9. Old PC
10. All others

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!
