MassDrop, Any Good?
« on: Sun, 13 January 2013, 17:53:34 »
Just wondering if anyone here has actually used MassDrop and if they provide a reliable/good service for our various causes.

They obviously must charge a fee for their service, I wonder how much and if it's worth it?

It's obviously included in the price, and I guesstimated the ErgoDox kit would cost about $150 in parts alone, so $50 for massdrop/shipping/payment-to-the-devs (assuming the devs are taking a cut) isn't nearly that bad.

I remember talking to Will (Mechanical keyboard MassDrop Rep), he said they make about 10% or so, which in retrospect, isn't a whole lot, especially with a project like the ErgoDox. from talking to Will, they are very into the group buys, personally. Will has a mechanical keyboard (a Leopold IIRC) and I think he lurks on DT and Geekhack under the alias BaudlyImage or similar...

SmallFry has a good memory :) This was BaudlyDamage's thread introducing his service to GH.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

I consider giving them a try next time I have a buy. I'm tired of scampal and there is not much other alternatives.

They are crazy for doing some of this stuff, considering how small their cut is, but I guess whatever works for them :)

I was impressed by the MD guys at the meet-up they sponsored.  They told us there that their cut varies from buy to buy, depending on the details, risk, time commitment, etc.  For group buys with with suppliers that we don't already have relationships with, or with many small parts (like the Ergodox) I think MD makes a lot of sense.  Not so sure about SP keycap buys though.

I participated in their safety razor group buy. Was a good deal, just takes a little longer to get your goods. Maybe like 1-2 weeks.  Nowhere as near as bad as here, where group buys can takes months to finish.

The group buys here don't pick up as much momentum because we don't have enough people.. custom keyboards is still a relatively small market.

When I first came to it, I thought people were freaking crazy for paying $3 for a single keycap.....

Nawh, Yea I' get you... but the rest of the world refuse to accept us.

It's definitely a hard thing to break into...

I mean,, $50-100 for sets of keycaps, which to a "norm-y" is a a handful of flimsy plastic.. :))

Haha yeah, but to "each his own" I guess :\
And at least we aren't completely alone in our love of keyboards ^=^

I have solved the problem guise! Geekhack integration! :P

On a side note, Will, I need a password reset email sent to my account. The reset password box doesn't seem to work for me.
