CM Storm Quickfire TK (MX Blue)
« on: Sun, 20 January 2013, 00:58:03 »
So, I got a CM Storm Quickfire TK (Blue) in the mail today. At first glance, it looks nice, however, like some others, not a real fan of the font they use. I'm planning to get some PBT keycaps for this board. If you have any questions about the Quickfire TK, let me know.

You would have trouble finding the mods though.

PBT would defeat the point of having a backlit keyboard, unless that is your intention anyway. The only backlit-compatible PBT keycaps (that I am aware of) are those offered by Deck/TG3 which have ugly fonts (Deck) or odd-sized modifier keys (TG3 BL82).

I did hear Signature Plastics are going to be making PBT keycaps for backlit keyboards soon. I may wait for those.

Oh, and ultimately, I want to go for a effect similar to this:

That video just shows backlighting under non-backlight-friendly keycaps (by which I mean that the legends are not translucent).

Ducky have a couple of sets of backlight-friendly keycaps, but they won't fit the CM TK because of the unusual modifiers.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That stinks. Well, hopefully we'll have pbt keycaps for backlit keyboards sometime this year.

There are (a few, a very few), just not for the unusual layout CM TK has,.

Most of the Ducky Shine key caps will fit the Quickfire TK, but the spacebar won't fit so you won't be able to fit the windows keys or Fn key either. Aside from those, all the other keys seem to fit fine. I have a CM Quickfire TK and I've used a Ducky YOTD key cap set to replace most of the font.

Mechanical keyboards are primarily vessels for novelty keycaps...

Looking to purchase one of these with blues soon as well.

By the looks off the board I think the back lighting would still shine through inbetween the keycaps.

I'm wondering if a 104 keycap PBT set would work. I think the space bar would be the only one that wouldn't fit, no?

It really depends on the board. My Ducky DK9008G2Pro came with PBT keycaps and has a backlit WASD cluster. I can barely see the backlighting at all, even in a dark room, so I leave it off. Other keyboards might have super bright LEDs that would allow such bleed to occur.

So, I decided to return the Quickfire TK. It's a good keyboard, but just.....not my style. On the bright side, I decided that I really like Cherry MX Blues. I saw that amazon was selling a Blue Filco w/ MX Blues, so will probably get that one.

This is the one, right?

With the two different sized modifier keys in the bottom row?

Wow I never noticed that... kinda changes my mind about the board even though I really want something compact but still with a numpad.

It's going to be harder to find row 1 keys that length.

Might have to spend a bit more money and go for a Ducky then. Cherry blues and white LED's looks nice. Could get a TKL and buy a cheap numpad I guess.

IMO, all backlit cherry boards should ship with replacement LEDs, because they're BOUND to go out..

This way, the color matching is possible.. otherwise it's next to impossible to find an identical LED.

I think the spacebar is non-standard as well.
