Man I need to get my hands on my PBT caps
« on: Sun, 20 January 2013, 21:55:11 »
MUST FIND PLACE TO GET SOME PBT CAPS, these stock caps on my Filco are quite literally beating my fingers with their evil pad printing. I saw the PBT caps from Ducky on mechanicalkeyboards, but those don't look very good.

To be fair, my comparison is this set set of Ducky.  Mine have very un-even shading in the lasered print.  My imstos are green on dark grey.

I didn't know filcos had pad printing... I'm pretty sure they're laser-ed, and then filled with "white stuff."  Eventually the surface will become shiny and "flat" where the raised letters will be flush with the cap surface..

The only concern with ABS is that it shines up "unevenly," but there's nothing wrong with shine itself..

If ALL your caps were equally shiny, that would look just fine....

Because I use a custom layout, I'm stuck with blank caps... sigh....

The one with the 4 dedicated 'extra' keys for Calc/Comp/WWW/etc is for the DK1008. You know, the 'low cost' one. So I'd be surprised if they didn't feel cheaper too. Since you know, they are cheaper.

If it ain't dye-sub black-on-white or similar, PBT's like a damn sponge. Won't have the agonizing wear-through of current ABS lasered crap - please stop confusing it for pad printing - but PBT is great at soaking up the least bit of dirt.

The ones from my groupbuy similar to current Cherry 'white' PBT. Slight grey shift. Even if missed the buy, you can still get any of those sets from imsto direct but for higher price.

I've tried both, there isn't much difference unless the surface texture is course vs smooth..

what were you expecting?

i mean't "courser" vs "smoother"..

they are usually always somewhat textured... the thick vs thin isn't a huge difference. It's there, just not huge...

easy experiment, just put some hot glue on the underside of the longer R4 caps.

I understood what you meant, I was just wondering witch vendors sold which style. I had a set of what I thought were course and would like to get them again.

Yeah, It can be hard to spend $80-$90 on a set of keycaps, especially when you needlessly have to pay for a numpad set.

Still, i the long process of deciding whether I want ABS DS or more expensive PBT dyesub  :-\ I can't see buying the ducky sets because they are just too ugly for their price.

Good luck with your choice though.

The issue with ABS is, as long as you're getting "Bright" colored caps, whether they'd be dual shot or otherwise,, the "shine" will look OK; because the bright color overpowers the shine.

But if you get "dark" color abs caps, even if they're double shot.. Shine still looks bad because the glare reflectiveness will make the caps look "patchy"

which is "fine" as long as it's even...

Even if black caps shine.. If you buy a bottle of acrylic polishing solution, and get the "WHOLE thing evenly shiny".. It'd still look Very GOOD.

The splotchiness is the issue.

Hmm what was i expecting? I think some kind of 'grip', a subtle contact kind of feeling. Also a higher quality feel.
But that might be a bit overthought, they just felt less good than my cherry ds.
(I'm suspecting i might react to pbt with a 'dry finger feel' as someone described it already.)

Another factor is the smoothness of the surface, i prefer less coarse and more smooth. The ones i tried i'd say were medium coarse (on a new G80 from amazon).

I instantly did feel though that they should be quite durable - resistant.

With the exception of the "rubber coated" K90 keys and the WASD cluster K60 keys.. There's no other "grip" keys that I know of.

higher quality feel,,, this isn't a very precise definition, but "usually" people mean "SOLID"

The only way to achieve solid feel, as solid as possibly with cherry is, Plate mount + aluminum Case + Sticker.

The aluminum case makes a surprising amount of difference on the bottom out feel.

The plate obviously prevents pcb flex.

The stickers makes the "very initial" moment of key press, like the first 1.5mm or so feel "straighter" and more controlled..

However, I don't think that keys should be "stickered" at all...   Because the upper housing "WAS DESIGNED" to move a little for a reason... to compensate for the fact that you might strike the key "From a different angle"

Because the upper housing can move slightly and has a little give, the "totality" of the "hammer down" process is smoother, because there is wiggle..

Taping the upper housing would make it "more likely" for the stem to directionally GRIND against the inner walls, causing "MORE friction" for the keypress.

The Ducky PBT set I linked above is, in my opinion, textured like no other keycap set I've tried. The Filcos Ninjas (ABS) seem like glass in comparison, and they aren't even worn. I'm not sure if all Ducky PBT caps feel that way.

The default ABS keycaps on this PLU-M87 I'm typing on are also textured nicely. Unfortunately they already seem to have some wear.

I think they make the switch worse.
As a new stickered-board owner, I think they're really more for show. Doubt they have an effect either way.

jiggle the stem, notice it jiggles "a bit less" than un-stickered...  I don't believe this to be a "good thing", because the jiggle helps smooth out the keypress, when you strike the key from different angles.

A little follow up on my experience with pbt:
I'm now trying some thin pbt with with very smooth texture (older cherry lasered caps) and like those a lot better.
Compared to my abs caps they feel less 'sticky'. Having dry hands i prefer the abs though.

conclusion: coarse pbt, not for me.
