Realforce 45 EK edition vs. HHKB PRO
« on: Sat, 02 February 2013, 15:21:42 »
My question is: Do they both feel the same when typing? Are they both just as loud as the other? Also, do you think it would be a waste of money to buy the Realforce 45EK edition if i already have the HHKB Pro 2. i don't have a problem with the arrow keys not being on the HHKB. Thanks.

it'd be a waste if you only use one computer daily, and thus having 2 keyboards, it'd be a waste, because no one goes back and forth between 2 keyboards once the novelty wears off...

Buy both, and then sell the one you like less. you take a $50 hit maybe, but that's the cost to find out "what's best, for you"

No. The feel is actually quite different. In my experience, the RF 45g felt significantly lighter than the HHKB. Probably because the lack of a plate on the HHKB softened the landing and absorbed more of the force of the keystroke. Kind of psychological, but definitely noticeable.

And the HHKB is quite a bit louder than the RF 45g. Also probably because it lacks a plate. As far as money goes, I think asking if it's a waste is not going to be very productive, as most of us here already spend way too much on keyboards.

While I agree that Topre in general isn't worth the price.... Since it's a psychological yearning that we're trying to overcome here, $50 isn't that steep a price....

In my Experience the difference is quite different. Though this is coming from a variable, but the variable was solid whereas the HHKB isn't. That being said, I love the HHKB and I sold the RF

I strongly disagree there. A friend and I (I'm not sure we aren't the only ones) both switch between multiple boards on a single computer. It may be a month at a time, but I still wouldn't dare sell one of my keyboards.

I used to do that too. Hell, I swap between my 87u 55 and my HHKB every couple of days.

So whether the Topre keys are PCB or plate mounted don't really affect the "Topre" tactility of the keys?

Yes and no, each key will feel the same, but RF does feel more solid.

Having owned both HHKB and RF, would you say the 55g version is most like typing on the HHKB - since you said the 45g RF feels much lighter than HHKB?

I'd say the HHKB is somewhere in between the 55g and the 45g Topre.

Hell, my 2nd 55g Topre feels lighter than my AE 55g, so there's definite variance between keyboards, even in the same model. What I can say is that I much prefer typing on the HHKB to the 87u, regardless of weight.
