Undecided
« on: Fri, 08 February 2013, 13:27:50 »
Now that I have joined to community, it is my duty to not just talk about, but be about it. I am purchasing a mechanical keyboard and here are my requirements:

Cherry MX Black switches
Backlit
Tenkeyless

I am torn between KBT Pure and Ducky Shine II. I feel like the smaller layout of the Pure will be either blessing or curse. The Ducky Shine I know will work, but something about the Pure the draws me to it.

Thoughts?

Start conservatively with the Ducky and then buy a Pure later on? I started on full size boards and have been migrating down. You get to try more boards (Lots of fun) and you really figure out what you like. Plus you feel like you're spending your money wisely  :p

You can easily mod the switches on the Pure if that makes a difference to you.

I believe Ducky are plate mounted vs the pure's pcb mount. Plate mounted (based on heresay) is supposed to be more sturdy feeling. Also I've heard of PCB mount boards "bowing" while typing, if you're a heavy typer which goes without saying if you're typing on Blacks.
i type, therefore i geekhack

Grab a plate, a PCB and some switches and start making your own!  Either the Phantom or the GH60~.

Some of the rounds have closed but there always seems to be somebody willing to part with their order.

Lots of new 60%ish board coming out soon, might be worth taking a look into some others if you don't mind holding for a little longer. Also if you are torn between 60% like Pure and tenkeyless, have you looked at 75% options like Keycool 84 or Choc Mini? Might be something that would suit you for a compromise on space vs. loosing so many keys.

My setup is a Logitech G110 with a Razer Nostromo. My though is a TKL keyboard with a nice numpad on the left. The only mechanical keyboard I saw where you can move the numpad to the left is the Azio Levetron which I personally find ugly for no reason. I also only see mechanical numpads with blue switches, so I might have to mod the keys I need with black or red switches or keep the nostromo.

As always, suggestions are welcome.

Has there been a group buy for a "pure" plate?

If not, then the pure sux just like the poker...

but Poker now has elevated status, because there's a plate available.

No, there hasn't been a Pure plate yet but there will be when GH60 buy happens.

There are some keypads with blacks, browns that aren't so hard to find. I think the Keycool one can be had in reds, and surely the new one from Leopold whenever that is available.

I am very much looking forward to GH60,, is there any word on who's making the aluminum case for it? or will that be a separate buy?

It's looking like there may be a few choices. At least 4 people have been working on different cases.

Since OP said Blacks, I am assuming he will be using them for gaming. I find 60% keyboards are a little cumbersome when it comes to gaming. Arrow keys, Fkeys, Numpad, and the Pause/Home/Delete cluster are all a little tedious to use. The Esc key next to the Number rows  is nice though. Just something to consider.

It might just be the CNC Aluminum case, but my Pure feels rock solid. The Pure has an extra mount in the center of the board that I think increases the rigidity over the Poker.

When I switched it to the Duck Poker case, there was a tremendous difference in flex. Of course that case was designed to be used with a plate, but if the default Poker case is anything like the 3rd party, then I can see why so many people complain about the Poker.

I only like my 60% for gaming. I don't use any of those keys you mentioned at all for any game I can think of that I play. Some of them might have crap mapped to there by default but I can change it, no problem.
The only one I can think of that was a nuisance recentlyish was the newest Deus Ex, it has something hard mapped to a function key or something that you couldn't change in game. I had to go mucking about in the registry or something to remap.

I play SC2, and use Fkeys quite often. For custom UMS games I use the Numpad for "in bag items"

I don't think many other games use Fkeys though.

No not really, outside of a few other RTS and MMO most games don't. I guess having a programable keypad on the left would be another way to go for that particular problem. Or if the kmac mini wasn't so difficult to get, that couldbe a great board for an RTS'er.
