Cherry MX Brown question

Hey there,

I just bought my Filco Majestouch 2 Cherry browns. After using for a day as an ex Cherry Blue user, i found out that its very silent. That was what i need. But there is a problem, the keys feel very weird. They are kinda hard to press (i know its 45g force) They feel kinda stiff to me. Is it going to get any softer with usage? I think its the tactile thing makes me irritated but blues didn't feel like this. It's very hard to explain how the keys actually feel but i'm sure brown users know what i mean I'm kinda going to regret buying browns instead of reds if this stiffness will stay like this. Paid lots of money and i'm not that rich....

I think this is kind of a hard question to answer because it is all about a subjective "feel" of the switch. Having used reds and blues that I can compare with browns, I can not say I experience the same stiffness you are describing. There is some light resistance, and while the actuation force is similar for reds and browns, to me browns feel heavier. It feels like you need more force to push the brown switches past its tactile "bump" to register a key stroke.

However, the switches do not really strike me as "stiff". Especially not compared to blues. If you would have had reds before, then I would have understood what you meant. But coming from blues I would not expect you to think they are stiff.

well you shoulda' waited until you were rich... cuz now you've eaten top ramen for a whole week just to find out you "don't" like brown.

Blue gives a clean and crisp sensation in part due of the "audible" click response.

The sound tricks you into thinking as if there's a little stick that went "snap"..


Brown doesn't have this ability.. but in terms of actual FEEL they are merely "a bit less" tactile than mx blue..


Do this experiment.


Throw a thick bedding comforter over the mx blue keyboard and the mx brown keyboard and put on a set of isolating earbuds// earplugs..

now type on both,, you'll notice that while the blue is indeed more tactile, it no longer feels as crisp without the sound..


This is why people complain about the blues from Coolermaster "not clicking" because the Clicking is a huge part of the experience for mx blue

I have a WASD 104 with Blues and O-rings that I would happily trade for your Filco with Browns. Barely used for the same reason, includes a set of keycaps that have had absolutely zero use. In all original packaging.

It has the click of Blues but the O-rings make it quieter.

But I like Browns, so it doesn't ever get used.

When I first got my Max Nighthawk X8, I felt the same way; it felt stiffer than browns should feel like. Just give a few days for you to break the keys in. Do some hardcore gaming and get the keys warmed up a bit and they will loosen up. Don't worry!

Strange. I never noticed this. I have always felt that switches are actually consistent and do not " loose up " on the keyboards that I own. For example, whether it is my f10 key, which is not used, or the letter C that is used all the time, it feels that same way. Is it possible that you just get used to it?

I think when I got my HPE 87 the keys were lubed or something because they feel very smooth, almost linear. I can't even feel the bump when I type, as I bottom out.  I compared this to a single switch that I got from the WASD Sampler Pack, and the browns feel much more tactile and you can feel the bump.

Give it time to break in.
Use it few hours a day, for, say... two months.
For me there's no clear preference. I love both reds and browns. Blues are nice, when alone in the room.

I personally like browns better. I can't stand blue (i thought i could but the clicking makes me mad) and reds are fine but you need really to press down, otherwise you get uncontrolled output.
So for me the next keyboard has browns again.

Browns get slighly softer after you break them in, like any other switch. New switches always feels weird.
If you still dont like them, you can lube them
Still dont like them? Get some heavy, thicker keycaps.

You must be using different reds than I am. They feel like my finger just falls through them.

Well, i think i used the wrong word. What i was trying to say was that one need to press them down. Not exactly sure where the point of contact is but it starts early. In order to print really just one letter i need to press the key all the way down. If not, i get repeated letters.
So yeah, force maybe the wrong word.
