Which Mechanical Tenkeyless?
« on: Mon, 22 April 2013, 04:12:26 »
I have a hard time deciding on my first mechanical keyboard. Based from what i want (tenkeyless, MX Blues) i have narrowed it down to Filco Majestouch 2, Leopold Otaku and KBC Poker. Are there others that i are equally as good or better than those choices? Is there a reason to specifically pick one or the other?

From the ones you mention, I've only used the Filco TKL, which I can highly recommend. They can be rather expensive and hard to track down though, so it probably comes down to a compromise between availability and price.

Sorry for the less-than-useful advice, but I hope others can weigh in on the other boards you mentioned.

CM storm quick fire rapid or stealth(if available) both are as good if not better than filco.

Actually CM Storms are easier for me to get, since i can get them locally and a t cheaper price i think, but why would you consider them as better options than filco or leopold?

The if available was meant for the stealth which is new release. Yes this forum pretty much agrees that quickfire rapids are as good as filco at half the price.

Because qfrs are made by costar(oem) and that is the same oem that filco use. Also has features standard filco boards don't have like media keys (only camo?) and detatchable usb cable). Solid board and well worth it, you can use the save money to find some keycaps or for something else.

Does Rosewill have anything good on Tenkeyless and MX Blues? I love the look of ivory limited, but sadly its a full sized keyboard...

Dunno dont really like the look of rapid. And stealth is hard to find since its new.

Does this really exist? google doesnt give my any results for it. And it sounds like its full sized...

Here's a nice list that mashby threw together of TKL and smaller boards. Mashby kills it with his lists :D

And I'll throw my vote in for the Leopold FC700R is you can find it. The stock caps are awesome and the redesign of the case is great. You can check out my thoughts on it here.

Poker isn't in production anymore from what I've heard. The poker 2 is being released in may. I wouldn't suggest the leopold. If you plan to swap out the keys at any point the leopold has a different spacebar. I would recommend the filco, ducky, or cm storm.

Some nice Blue switch tenkeyless keyboards I`ve been looking at buying myself:

The vortex is cheap but not too bad quality, and the Ducky I love and I am buying with browns.
Gl! :D

I own a ducky 9008 G2 pro with blue switches (TKL) and a filco TKL, both super high quality board, I would choose the filco over the ducky though.

So based on your input i guess Filco Majestouch 2 should be my main option, then Ducky DK9087 G2 pro and then Leopold Otaku?

KBC Poker and KBT Pure are sexier and smaller in size, but i just noticed that you need to use the function keys in order to use the arrows, so i'll think i'll stay with TKL for now...

You wouldnt recommend the leopold due to the different spacebar? I do intend to replace the caps with blanc ones, so you mean to say that this will be an issue on leopold? Any other reason filco is better than leopold?

Thanx man. List is pretty useful indeed, although rosewill dos not seem ot come out with any TKL.

Sure does ;) http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?keyword=DK9087

There's the Shine II's on there if you're after backlighting, or further down the G2 Pro's. I've got one with blue switches and white PBT caps + a hybrid blue/green switches with black PBT caps. Love em both.

The previous post said 9078. The last 2 numbers where inverted and i wasnt getting any results at the time.  :D

Well anyway, i'm still trying to figure if i should go with majestouch 2 or 9087 g2 pro. Both seem pretty good, but ducky already comes out with blanc pbt caps (which will save me money from buying them) detachable usb cable (is that right, cause thats what i see from pictures) backlit wasd, and even says it has full nkro on usb. So overall could offer more. Only issue is i cant find it on Europe and ordering from US will add tax payment on customs house.

Also a couple of other questions.

-I heard something about cherry stabilisers. Is this a feature worth having? Do either of theos boards have it?

-And is there a difference between tactile action and click action? I know mx blues are tactile but on product pages i see them mentioned as click action. Whats that distinction?

Oh whoops, sorry..

Yep the Ducky boards have detatchable USB cables. Here's a good little review from another member of GeekHack - comapres the Filco MJ2 with the Ducky Shine II (very similar to the G2Pro, ABS caps and full backlighting). Both TKL.

Ducky uses Cherry stabalisers, where as I believe Filco use Costar stabalisers. I haven't tried Costar stabalisers but the general consensus seems to be Costar's are better.. I don't have any problems with my Cherry stabs though ;)

The difference between Blue and Brown switches it pretty small. Blue's have a slightly stronger spring (55g blue vs 45g brown). They both share the same tactile bump. This is where if you press down the key slowly, you feel the force required sharply increase at the bump, then once you're over it the key easily bottoms out below the force. The Clicky switches have an extra piece on the switch that pings down and hits the bottom of the switch at this point, adding a 'CLICK!' noise to each keypress. It's not THAT loud, but I could see how it annoys some people. I personally LOVE my clicky switches, adds a real crispiness to each key press.

You asked why i would choose Filco over ducky. First, let me link the ducky/filco boards I have owned/currently owned so you can know exactly where my opinion is coming from.
Ducky: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=185
Filco: http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=834

So basically a TKL filco MJ2 and a Ducky 9008 G2 pro, Filco with brown switches and Ducky with blue switches. I personally like the costar stabilizers on the filco better than the cherry stabilizers on the ducky. I think the build quality on the filco was better than the ducky, though unless your a perfectionist it isn't going to matter, and doesn't effect the performance. I do like how the ducky had dip switches to disable the windows keys, but in reality this doesnt matter too much because I have a program downloaded that allows me to change what some keys do (for instance i have f7 as volume down, and f8 as volume up). In reality, both are quality boards, I just think the stabilizers on Filco are better as well as the build quality.

Has anyone tried to solder things to a ducky board... that is a good determinant of quality pcb..

for example.. the QFR, if you try to solder things to it, you have to be very careful because the traces and laminate can easily burn off they're crazy thin, and meager..

while the FILCO pcb takes heat like a champ.
