I would highly suggest Dell IPS monitors. Rouger is definitely the guy to ask though. Hopefully he sees this or I'll tell him to respond.

Well, I can personally recommend the Dell U2412M, but at your budget you can get a version with a better panel, the U2410, for $400...

Really, it depends on your aspect ratio preference, matte/glossy screen, specific resolution, panel size, stand features, etc.

For instance, my preferences are:

24" or bigger
16:10
Matte screen
1920x1200 or higher
Stand tilt, rotation, Panel rotation and height adjustment
Some sort of IPS Panel

For me, the Dell U2412M fit my idea of a monitor well, and I'm happy with it (for now)... I may end up getting a bigger monitor, but not as a main monitor. I'm considering a 30" panel for a wall mounted panel...

I would highly suggest Dell IPS monitors. Rouger is definitely the guy to ask though. Hopefully he sees this or I'll tell him to respond.

Yes. Dell monitors are great, and RogueR is definitely the man to talk to.

I actually have a Dell U2412HM that RougeR recommended to me. It love it so much. But a lot of people like 30" monitors. I prefer 23" to 24" ones.

What's the difference between the HM and the M? or am I just overlooking the fact that they are the same and Google is failing me?

I *think* it's the coating. Mine has the anti-glare coating. But I'm not 100% sure.

For gaming and movies I would get the 1920x1080... it has been shown that most modern pc games will chop the sides on a 16:10 monitor, so you actually see less with a 1920x1200 than you would on a 1920x1080.

I THINK the HM model is just the one released to Asian markets,
or you may be thinking of Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23" which is a different monitor

what do you want your monitors for? always try to match in brands if going multimonitor, if you are moving to eyefinity in the future the bezels on dells may bother you, they dont me. debezelling can help

U2142M is a great monitor and i think Dells really are the cremedalecrem in monitors.
U2142m offers a great IPS screen with pretty good anti glare, it has a decent 8ms response time. 60hz ofc, its and 6bit+something panel so colour reproduction should be pretty good
also 16:10 master race those extra 120PX really make a difference

Stand allows lots of rotation and adjustment and IMO dell stands are some of the best on the market. and id put them on any monitor, also build quality and warranty are excellent.

or theres the U2410 used
u2410 has a slightly high response time and uses H-IPS instead of S-IPS, some say this is a better panel for design work as it is true 8bit
buying used is always great

dell u2412m on amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-U2412M-LED-Monitor/dp/B005JN9310/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367501322&sr=8-1&keywords=dell+u2412m

buying used will be a far better deal and i think warranty transfers between owners, even if you dont have the docs. ussually a 3yr warranty

also consider with the extra money getting a second monitor

alternatively literally just over budget for this one consider the u2711
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-UltraSharp-U2711-27-LCD-Monitor-/181132488250?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item2a2c566e3a

its an 8bit panel with FRC to 10bit? i dont fully understand it
anyway its got everything the u2412m has and its 2560x1440 with better colour reproduction, i moved from the u2412m to this. its incredible

so IMO either go for a 1440p monitor used

or

a dell u2412m new/used AND a second monitor in portrait next to it (make sure its IPS) tn monitors dont look good in portrait, a 1080p/1200p dell would be best
or you can actually afford 2x u2412m refurbished on here http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B005JN9310/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished&qid=1367501322&sr=8-1
for 200 dollars EACH

oh and perhaps have a look up on the yamasaki catleap 2b : 120hz.net
IPS, 1440p and 120hz via overclocking...have a read up on it and other korean monitors

Multimonitor and high resolution is a must for me

once you go 1440+ or multimonitor you never go back. seriously DO IT

only if you dont set the game up right, and its not a large difference
you can ussually set it up to do it properly in the game files, quite simple

and for desktop use its much better

anyway if you like 16:9 there the 1080p U2312HM or the 1440p u2711

My suggestion look at a ASUS PA or PB IPS monitor. I own every model they have released so far and their great. Some are better than others but the prices do reflect that.

Asus do make some solid models, especially if you are looking for slimmer bezels.
Remember a lot of monitors use the same panel, its worth looking up

The dell u2711 uses the same panel as the mac 27" the hp 27", asus 27"and a few others. i think the NEC 27" is different,

The ASUS uses samsung's PLS panel and I think the Dell and HP use IPS though I may be wrong as the only Dell ive done any research on is the new U2713H and U2713HM which are both using new panel and backlight technologies. The PLS is one thing I dont like especially since the rest of their monitors use IPS. Also the styling is completely different so it stands out next to monitors from the same line and to me looks more like a TV than a monitor.

I recommend any 120hz or 144hz 27 inch as there's only 2 of them.. LOL...

There's really no point in getting IPS unless you NEED color accuracy..

The only reason I got an IPS is because it was the largest size at the time.

But 1080p is more than sufficient for gaming and work..  the reason a 27" is MUCH better than a 24" even at the same resolution, is that you can put the 27" farther away... This greatly reduces eye-strain..

I should know because I use a computer 15 hours a day..

The 144hz is also a pretty cool feature because motion is super smooth.. this is not the same as 120hz tvs where they don't actually accept 120 hz signal..

the 144hz asus monitor will actually do 144hz refresh rate..

The asus VG series has a better contrast ratio than the VS that you posted so i would try to get this one over the one you posted if you can
http://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-24-Inch-Screen-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B00B2HH7G0

But if i was only able to choose from the ones you posted the Asus VS is by far the superior monitor from the bunch

Didn't find any dell monitors being sold here in iceland, samsung , philips, lg, acer, aoc, hp, asus and alot of benq but no dell.
What's your opinion on these? http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VS248H-P-24-Inch-Full-HD-Monitor/dp/B0058UUR6E

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-IPS237L-BN-Widescreen-Monitor-5000000/dp/B008PBXKG2

well out of the ones you listed the only one that was a IPS one was the LG but none of them are really good.

for gaming I would recommend a 120hrz or even better a 144hrz that is if yo uhave the power to push those kind of FPS at 1080p. If you cant there really is no point in something like that.

I for one cant stand 1080p on anything larger than 23in for a monitor as that is the perfect size for text for me and anything larger should have a higher resolution.

thats actually not true they have 23in 1080p and 24in 1200p though they arnt as great of a deal because at least in the US we already have great deal on those as their pretty standard. The Korean 27in 1440p and 30in 1600p monitors on the otherhand are great deals and are usually around half the price of a name brand in teh US.

Can you check on the ones i posted? i'm trying to avoid ordering online, those are available to me locally.

do you possibly have a list or a place that I can look at what you have locally as the ones yo ulisted are all accross the board really and dont excell and anything

the contrast ration your talking about is dynamic which you shouldnt really look at at all because thats the difference between the white with the backlight all the way up and the black with the back light all the way down basically meaning less.

on another note your budget is pretty big for a monitor so you should have a bunch of options I think your pigeon-holing yourself unessarily

another nice thing that you should consider since you said you watch a bunch of videos/movies is a monitor with HDMI or DP that has changeable refresh rates so you can match the frame rate of the video/movie your watching in the case of a IPS or one that supports 120hrz as with that all NTSC frame rates are supported with changing the refresh rate. Since your in a PAL region the 144hrz monitor might be nice because you should be able to underclock it to 100hrz so it would be a proper multiple of your 25 and 50 frame rates, this would probably be the case of a TN monitor.

dont bother with a 120/144hz chances are you wont even push that fps in modern games unless you have a good rig. even then IPS makes a far bigger difference

DONT get that asus, its crap tn and not 120hz

yeah. that 246Q has an actual IPS panel, as opposed to the 2412M's eIPS. Both are fine, but given a choice the 246Q's probably the way to go.

The PA246Q uses a P-IPS panel was the best bang for the buck when it launched at $600. I preordered it and got it for $550. The other thing you should remember is that it is also 10bit capable. Im glad to see it coming down so low in price but I think that just because of AH-IPS and W-LED/GB-LED displays that have been announced/launched recently.

I recommend using the monitor between 0-15% brightness to get best color reproduction and well be not blinding. Also if you have a DisplayPort http://amzn.to/100DWGa use it otherwise use a dual link DVI cable (http://amzn.to/100E0FY) for best preformasnce of the monitor.

if your getting a nice monitor like that you should also look at some ambient backlighting which help greatly in the dark but will help in any 100% not brightly light room. Basically it increases your perceived contrast of the monitor by decreasing the contract between the brighter monitor and the darker wall behind it. Besides that is is also way better for you eyes when you watch in complete or near complete darkness.

I currently use http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=705841&pid=305 and use 2 strips for the same monitor I recommended you and power them off a 4 port usb wall charger instead of powering them off USB ports on my PC cause that to me see like a waste.

Though I super intrigued by http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/woodenshark/lightpack-ambient-backlight-for-your-displays and will probably just get one and try it out on my HDTV first as they dont have multidisplay support yet.

Followed the suggestion to cop the Dell U2412M and haven't regretted the decision. It's great!

Not sure what the best brightness to contrast ratios are, i'm currently @ 30 brightness, 30 contrast, it's still a bit straining for my eyes, not sure if i should put it any lower of it it's something else?

my 100% since its comes calibrated and i had the brightness at 0 and using the sRGB profile since im not outputting 10bit to it. are you saying it too bright normally with lights in room on or with them off?

Whatever you get, make sure its 120Hz for an LCD or above 100Hz for a CRT. They are expensive but are apparently much easier on the eyes than a standard 60/75Hz, though you may need to tone down the resolution to feel the difference.

As good as LEDs are getting I don't feel the technology has matured enough, yet. Especially with all the manufacturing issues they're having right now.

I have been thinking of buying one of the Korean ones for quite a while now. Was it a year ago or so now that the first ones came around? I was lucky to get a U2410 before they started making them worse in U2411 and U2412 from what I have heard. The things I lack in the Korean monitors is 16:10, 2560x1600. Does anyone know if there are any now? I have noticed there are a metric ****ton of options now. Catleap, Crossover, Achieva Shimian, Overlord and what have you.

wait until either there's a u3014 clone or dell offers good pricing (end of quarter we need to make numbers pricing) on the u3014. it is the best monitor on the market for hte best price period. it has a hardware lut for usage with the good irite calibrator, the best color consistency due to the WLED and 16:10 is slightly better for productivity than 16:9.

that said, if you can't or would rather do a bunch of smaller 27s, i would go with 3 of the warranteed A+ grade korean LG non LED (note not WLED) panels. they are really fantastic looking. they just lack the extra mile for professional color sensitive use. personally, i have a u2711 and an auria (microcenter) 27" side by side on ergotron arms. they are fantastic or both productivity and (when i'm not too lazy to calibrate) color sensitive work (obv the u2711 is much better for the color sensitive work). BUT the ccfl backlight takes too long to warm up. the backlight basically has to be on for an hour and temperature stable before you can take a serious color sensitive look at anything. WLED is the way of the future for a reason.

the U2412 is a shadow of the u2410 because of the non WLED approach to backlighting (must like the auria is not good for color sensitive work. they are good productivity monitors if you don't need the higher dot pitch of the 27s though. i had a 2410 at the office for years and loved it.
