GH Disc Golfers!
« on: Fri, 19 July 2013, 15:40:56 »
We were just having a discussion on the IRC channel about disc golf, and UniClown and I decided a thread simply had to be made. Who all plays disc golf? What are someo of your favorite courses? What discs do you throw?

My regular course right now is Village Greens in Greenwood Village, CO. It's not very difficult, but is a nice park. The wind can make a nice challenge some days!

I have a decent collection of discs, but the ones that get thrown the most are:
Innova Champion XCaliber
MVP Volt
Innova DX Viper (great for rmedium distance shots that require dodging obstacles)
MVP Tensor
Innova Classic Roc

Sweet! Binge and Meeba already know which discs I throw, but I ordered some discs online and went playing for the first time a few days ago.

I have an Innova TeeBird, Discraft Buzzz, and a Gateway SS Wizard.

Had an alright time due to the lack of navigation on the course. I plan on going back sometime this weekend with a friend. There is also a solid subreddit for disc golf here.

i usually get out and play once a week but used to go every day a few years ago.  i mostly toss a beast
bryant lake regional park is my home disk course.  one of the best courses in the state for sure.  if you make it up to MN I would recommend playing Bryant and the drive is worth it from the cities to play Blue Ribbon Pines.

I hear MN is a great place to live if you're into disc golf.

Man, I wish I played on courses that well maintained. Went out to David Lorentz park today, and I lost my XCaliber. :( Hopefully some kind soul returns it to me. I do love that disc a lot.

From my experience, frisbees are a recreational toy and disc golf discs are much harder, flatter, and thicker than frisbees. Not fun to get hit with.

Yeah, a buddy of mine decided to try to catch a driver in the air one day during practice throws. He wasn't able to throw correctly for a couple weeks after the sharp edge nailed him in the shoulder.

I love tossing around the discs..  Sometimes you end up tweaking a finger or joint, but it's a lot more fun than a regular frisbee.

Reviving the thread  ;D

I visited my brothers in Washington and learned that they were into DG too! I didn't bring my discs so I bought a shark and played a round with them.

We played at this course and it was a lot of fun. This was only my third round ever, and I finally got some really nice drives. My approach game is still weak, granted I only used the shark.

Nice, UniClown! I've never tried that disc... how do you like it?

In other news, someone at Lorentz park stumbled across my XCaliber and I now have it back. Yay for wicked long, hooked drives! I may be in the market for a new putter... my Classic Aviar is too light for the wind out here, and the Classic Roc is too picky with being thrown. You really gotta spin the living crap out of it to keep it straight.

I like it. It goes very straight if you whip it hard. I still haven't played enough to get a feel for it and in comparison to my other discs. Hopefully I will get out more soon.

Good someone found the XCaliber. For putters, the Wizard SS is loved by many and it was recommended to me, which is why I got it. It feels nice but not flimsy in the hand.

I play a little bit, as my neighborhood has a course.

I really do like those Sharks. They fly very straight.

I'm glad I found this thread!  I too enjoy discing.  I'm using some fairly generic discs that I bought quite a few years ago when it was emerging as a sport/hobby.  Haven't taken the time or money to expand yet.

I should clarify.  I didn't realize quite how old the sport is.  They're from the early 2000s.  To me at the time, this was "the beginning" of the sport and was definitely when it was becoming as popular as it is today.  I'll still post pics just for fun, but I wanted to clarify.

Let's all mourn the loss of a great disc today. My Innova DX Classic Roc is no more. I've been putting a lot of effort into learning my backhand throws with it this week, and I took it out to the Bird's Nest DGC in Arvada. From tee #15, I let this one rip, but it flaked out on me, and started flipping a huge anhyzer. It smashed into a tree and the flight plate was impaled by an angry tree branch.

I suppose in fairness, I was sitting on the edge of replacing it already for this very reason... It really became quite understable. I picked up a new Buzzz in Z plastic today, we'll see how it works for me!

Current discs for working my backhand throws:
- Discraft Z Buzzz
- Westside VIP Tursas
- Gateway Wizard SSS

Once these are more under control, I'll be pulling my Innova Echo Roadrunner back into the mix. :)

Like I said in my correction, I don't think these are rare, but here ya go.  They're from around 2000(?).  I didn't realize the sport was as old as it is, so to me this was the time it was getting big.  Sorry for the confusion.  Anyway, here they are:

I just picked this one up a few weeks ago.  Found it in some tall grass on the course I was playing.

I recently got a Leopard, as well! I want to like it, but it's too flippy for me to make it a primary fairway driver. Helpful for those good left-to-right backhand throws, though! :D
