it looks good even in a potato picture!

speaking of ergodox, it may be lame to throw in my own keyboard but i think it was pretty damn amazing when i just added varnish to the wrist rest kurplop made and added the retro dsa key caps (i ended up taking the retro off though....)

The reason why QWERTY was invented.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

So I appreciate the response, but from what I understand PFU Limited has made HHKBs since 1996, and were only acquired by Fujitsu in 2010.

For reference, here's a pic of the original HHKB - you can see it says PFU on it, not Fujitsu:

I'm still left wondering what keyboard or edition that black and gold model is...

I agree the incredible workmanship defies logic; however so does the design.

If you put the ball in the center of the board like that, and so high up, you have to lift your hand to use it.

If you are sitting well above the device. this may not be a large lift. but if you're just chilling in your seat. you may have to lift your entire shoulder to use the ball effectively.

I appreciate it when people scrutinize my work; it helps me to see what I may have overlooked.

Tp4tissue-  I understand your concern about the ball placement but in this case it's unwarranted, at least for me. I use the tray at a roughly 10-15º negative slope. This prevents any wrist extension while using either the keyboard or tray. I should know; my right hand only extends 15º back and is painful with any extension. That is why I have modified trackballs into trays in the past. Also, the tray allows me to keep the keyboard from being too high which is something to be concerned about with tenting..The concern I initially had was that the arcade buttons ended up being higher than what I thought optimal, however after a few days of use I pretty much forgot about that. What took me longer to adapt to was the center placement. I remember early on thinking I made a big mistake because it seemed unnatural being there. I think it took about three weeks before I stopped reaching to the right for the ball. Now I'm wondering if I should go back to a right ball on my next project. I'm pretty slow at learning new things.

My initial search for this forum was driven by my ergonomic needs. I can assure you, if my tray wasn't the best, most comfortable solution for my needs, it would be kindling for my next campfire.  Form should always follow function.

Thanks for the response. I almost always enjoy your insightful, albeit pointed comments.

Because he's using an old version of Windows which is really just MS-DOS with a basic GUI on top, and limited to 8.3 uppercase filenames ;)

A beauty - best Ctrl and Alt keys I have seen in a long time.
When I saw this one on ebay I thought I am going to cannibalize one of my Model F's - but I don't think they will fit.

Not everybody's cup of tea, but the Star Wars touchpad keyboard is pretty sweet looking, if you don't object to the flashiness of it.

That's LITERALLY, the best looking keyboard, ever.

That's right, I said it, I meant it, and I'm here to represent it.
