Sad face

My friend just got a new job at an architecture firm... At his office, everyone gets an IBM Model M. Funny thing is that since he's new, he gets rubber dome. I guess they're waiting to get a new Model M for him.

I think I've managed to convert about 1/3rd of my office.

I have four mechanical keyboards in my office at work, most with a non-standard setup (HHKB, Kinesis Advantage, Filco Ninja), so I have to keep a spare keyboard for the users that get intimidated.  Plus, they are NOT getting all up on my HHKB with their greasy-ass post-lunch hands.   ;D

Is that like techkeys office and you have 3 employees? ;)

Or like your day job because key caps and accesories don't put food on the table? :P

i am really trying to do this.  every single person in my office comments about how much they love my keyboards.   and as much as i tell them that they should take the plunge everyone gets really turned off by the price of mech boards. ****ing noobs....

how did you convince people to come to the side of typing enlightenment?

Some of them I just gave them a keyboard and said - try it for a few days...if you like it buy it, if not no big deal.

I also gave them my cost price with no markup.

If you are not joking about this, I'm really curious why they do that. First, it's hard to get a Model M, unless you mean the Unicomp versions, and imagine the noise when everyone's answering email at the same time. The fact that it's an architecture firm makes it even more mind boggling.

It's likely more for design aesthetics than the actual keyboards.  A lot of design/architectural firms decorate in unique and creative ways to make them stand out to clients, they may have been going for the retro vibe.  Else they just may be an awesome company  :)

I've been using mech keyboards at work as well. Then my boss tried it out and now he ordered a DAS for himself. It's a shame that my co-workers won't convert due to the price. Can't wait to run my own programming team one day. I'd definitely bill out mech keyboards for everyone.

I'll be really honest here - when I first saw POM sets, the sets I saw were all rainbowy and bright candy-ish colored, they looked kind of like Starburst  :))

Just go for the cheese keycaps.

Anyway, back in the day every keyboard would have been a Model M!

Mind you, there was probably only one or two computers in the office back then.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
