You're really just asking for a better, faster netbook @ $300...
Yes, that is what I wrote! A 7" netbook with modern specs and no keyboard. The hardware in the Nexus 7 (SRP at $230) is OK, but the software on that thing was not made for netbook use-cases, and it lacks ports.

The non-geeks. My dad. Your dad, whom you somehow seem to think is not as smart as you, simply because he bought a tablet. The average person won. The "noobs". And it's a good thing too. Computing shouldn't be the province of geeks only.

The average person is still a god damned idiot.

The average person expects technology to Just Work.

They don't even want to have to configure it, it should just do what they want in the way they want it.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I like the surface. I have a Pro, my finance has an RT. We use them all the time. They feel so much like computers, I find myself trying to swipe my primary PC monitors.

I'm not a fan of them either. I got one for my father, since his netbook started derping up, but I don't think I'd get one for myself.

I guess I could use one to have an API open when I'm programming (if I didn't have a second monitor) or a browser to look things up, but that's pretty much it.

A friend of mine likes them, he got his for when he visits clients for diets, you know note-taking, showing diets... It's useful for him and my father, my father all he did on the netbook was to browse sites and play solitaire hehehe

I put forward this analogy: tablets are to computing what automatic transmissions are to driving.

Tablet = oversized smartphone that doesn't make phone calls

OR

Tablet = unwieldy netbook with less functionality

conclusion: stupid unnecessary fad item for people who like to play farmville and check facebook without actually doing anything productive

if only a company could make a tablet sized phone..

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Got an iPad Mini and a Surface Pro. The iPad is nice and all, but it's mainly just for browsing and reading (via Kindle app). I just like using a keyboard too much to really take the iPad seriously. The Surface Pro is a nice little dev machine (handy for taking notes with the pen, too).

You're not alone in the anti-tablet thing.  I've used various iPaids and Android tabs, but none of them really deliver the experience of a REAL computer. Typing on one feels like sacrilege after all of the work I put into learning to touch-type - a skill which did NOT come easily to me.

But that's the problem.  They're really not meant to replace a computer.  So of course you feel like it's inadequate at doing so.  They're meant to be an in-between to a smart phone and a computer, a niche which we have clearly established on here that most people do not need or want, so it's therefore an even smaller niche since it overlaps so much with the other two.  However, I still don't get why everyone here is completely forgetting about the people who don't have smartphones.  A tablet is a very viable alternative to a smartphone for some people.

I honestly have never seen anyone with a tablet and not having a smartphone. Whether it's a BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Phone, Symbian, MeeGo, Android, or whatever, all tablet users I have seen as at least one smartphone.

Typing on one feels like sacrilege after all of the work I put into learning to touch-type - a skill which did NOT come easily to me.
And the on-screen keyboards are still staggered, but they ARE ****ING NOT USING STANDARD STAGGERING.
This means that even if the keys are big enough on the tablet's screen, I still have to look at the keyboard to make sure that I hit the right keys. My muscle memory is not useful any more.
This CRIME is perpetrated not only by Apple, but also by Google Android, Blackberry and Windows 8.
Windows 7's touch keyboard (in a window on the desktop) actually had standard staggering, but could not be resized to make the keys big enough.

Microsoft Surface Pro and I believe RT as well, has pretty much standard spacing on their touch screen keyboard. The vertical spacing isn't standard, but it's not as big of a deal because even if you don't hit a key directly in the center, you are still going to hit the correct key.

The ZXCV row is only 1/4 off but off in the wrong direction if you are a touch typist.

I'm sorry, I was wrong about the Windows 7 screen keyboard earlier. It has a uniform 1/2 key staggering, not standard staggering.

You are correct about the ZXCV row, just noticed that. It is indeed shifted 1/4 unit to the right to make room for the shift key.

The on-screen keyboard has the QWERTY row shifted 1/4 units to the left (on Windows 8 ).

I'm merely putting forth the idea that not all tablet users are "stupid" for having both a smartphone and a tablet, since they don't all need to have smartphones.  I agree that the majority do.  And I agree that that's a bit silly.

like how we all have multiple keyboards?

Precisely. This isn't 2010 anymore, guys. The future of personal computing is basically: Smartphone = everyone's ubiquitous computing/communication device, including developing world eventually. Tablet = what the desktop PC was twenty years ago, or what the laptop was ten years ago. The default computer for average people for media consumption/entertainment/light productivity. Laptop = what the desktop used to be; domain of professionals, business sector, content creators, actual work, people more invested into using their computer to rely solely on a tablet. Desktop = enthusiast/high-end productivity niche.

i'm thinking about getting an ipad mini, or rather my wife saw it and was thinking about it, my wife is an engineer, currently she's traveling to and from a plant she's building, she has 2 ipads. a work ipad that she can use in the field to whip out and look at pdfs/ diagrams or just go to emails to double check stuff. usually when my wife is doing this, she is with other co-workers, you're not gonna go "here let me show you and try to scroll on a 3.5in iphone a pdf that is 200megs", you use an ipad.

i got her a personal ipad a while ago, since she travels so much it has replaced her kindle (which broke anyway) and i pay for huluplus so she can watch hulu on the tablet(hulu is free but you u pay for a subscription if you want to watch it on devices, and you get HD), We're thinking about getting netflix again, but seems like amazon prime would be a better option... yea all this on a tablet.

again she travels, and she's not gonna watch hulu on her work laptop... sure other ppl do, but other ppl also get fired for it.

since we stopped playing diablo3 almost a year ago, she hasn't turned on her computer in almost a year, she can do everything with the ipad. she can lay in bed, watch youtube, browse websites and if she wants to, use it as a remote to control our bedroom HTPC and have a second screen up.

Its a niche item. Tough to spend the cash on, but if you happen to have one or get one  as a gift they are great to have around the house. Anything smaller than a 10" screen makes it a redundant device...too close in size to the big phones that are coming out these days.  If you are squinting....try pinching to zoom or get a bigger tab.
