Ebay and their prices, extortion?
« on: Tue, 27 August 2013, 16:53:53 »
Hey guys, some of you may recognise me, but recently I bought a Keycool with blacks and long story short, I miss my Noppoo with reds.
I have some spare cash lying around, so I thought, I'll search ebay and see what's going on, I manage to come across a nice deal on ebay, a guy selling a noppoo choc mini with reds and apparently he's only had it for a few weeks.

I bid and what not, secure my winnings and all that crap, but throughout the auction, mainly towards the end, the bidding becomes a bit excessive, it shoots up from £30 all the way to £85 ($132.10) and I didn't want to get beaten on the auction, so my top bid was the £85.

And now that the auction is over, I'm thinking to myself, there is no way on earth I am paying $132.10 + shipping for a Noppoo, it's barely worth $100 (with shipping), it's locale, it's in the UK so the shipping is only £7.50, but still.

I've messaged the guy explaining the situation, telling him that I am not willing to pay this amount for the keyboard and that he can re-list or whatever, I mean he only wanted £70 for it in the first place.

Have you guys had any situations like this? if so, what was the object of your desire,  if you were in a situation such as I, how did you solve it and if not, if you went through with your purchase, how did you feel afterwards?

Wait, so you bid $130 and then are now upset that you won it for $130?

I fail to see how this could fall under any definition of "extortion".

Make a decision and stick to it, either you are willing to pay £85 or you're not.  If you're not then don't enter that bid.  Never pay or bid more than you're willing to when you're being rational.  Realize that if you're not going to be rational riding the auction to the end that you need to not ride that train.

You should pay.  It isn't extortion.  It is an auction.  You bid.  Most of the bidding always happens at the end on an EBay auction, so the price increase should not be a surprise or excuse.

The seller should report you to EBay, if nothing else than because EBay will charge him a fee for the successfully concluded auction which had a winner (you).

Thats not cool, you sign a contract when you bid that you would honour your bid, the guy is (If he's human) going to be pissed, and he is fully in his right to strike you for none payment.

Also why when someone else offered £80 would he accept your offer of £70 lol?

Maths... its not hard.

The guy initially wanted £70 for the keyboard and then because I bid on the keyboard, the 'buy now' option disappeared. That's not so hard to comprehend, is it?

To me, it is extortion. Paying almost double for what the keyboard is worth.. is extortion, maybe your idea of extortion differs from mine.
Yes, I'm sure the 40p for putting the product up on E-bay will break his bank, I'll send him 40p if that's what he wants, idc, just not paying that vile amount for a keyboard.

Buy It Now disappears after the first bid.  It's not the sellers fault, it's something that eBay has set up automatically.  You should have just bought it at the BIN price.  Unless they had a shill account bidding and you can prove it, the sale price is all on you.  You bid above what it's worth and you decided you didn't want to lose it.  You can't blame the seller and try to renege on the auction.  Suck it up and pay for it.

And, so you know, extortion is illegally obtaining something through force or threats.  This is far from extortion.  It's you entering a sales contract, then deciding you want out.

Oh god, it seems we have a one person that doesn't know what the definition of a word is, I shall try to explain as if I would to a 3-year old.

First, here's the actual, factual definition of the word extortion, since you seem confused and want to make up your own definition to fit your fickle buying habits:
ex·tor·tion  [ik-stawr-shuhn]
noun
1.
an act or instance of extorting.
2.
Law. the crime of obtaining money or some other thing of value by the abuse of one's office or authority.
3.
oppressive or illegal exaction, as of excessive price or interest: the extortions of usurers.
4.
anything extorted.

How is you voluntarily saying you'll pay 85 GBP extortion?  Did you forget to mention the gun to your head while you were bidding like you forgot to mention he had a BIN price when the auction went live?

Everyone's had auction guilt, but you know what, most people realize and accept that there was no one but themselves to blame for their bid-happy actions and pull out the straw and suck it all up.

Oh, I missed where you called it a vile amount.  Even though you were the one that bid that.  How'd it become vile after you said you'd pay it, but not before?

Pretty sure we can all read, that's why we read and follow the ebay Terms of Service.   Your inability to stick to a decision under contract is...  ah forget it, you came here looking for support and unwilling to listen to criticism.

unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

I'll be honest, I agree that the OP needs to bone up and honor the contract, and calling it extortion just because he doesn't want to pay clearly indicates a misunderstanding of the word, but the responses in this thread are a bit overboard. Public shaming of this magnitude never achieves the intended effect, and probably is just going to make the OP bitter and resentful.
