Or what do you do for a living?

I work construction where I don't ever need a keyboard. I don't even know why I'm on this site tbh.

I wish I had parents. My father was an old-time small-town doctor.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

I rewatched Kidnergarten Cop recently.  It actually holds up really well.  Great flick.

And on fohat's note... there are parents and then there are the people that birthed you.  Sometimes they're different people, sometimes you only get to know one sort.

Work in the wonderful world of IT, where I get to wear many different hats.  Part-time SysAdmin, part-time DBA, part-time Tech all rolled up into the title of Engineer.  Does have it's perks, though, I mean, I've successfully converted my entire team onto using mechanical boards.

And on fohat's note...

I did not think that my comment would be misunderstood.

My father passed away rather abruptly at 71 when he should have had at least another decade of full and useful life.

My mother fulfilled her life and died in her sleep as she was starting to decline.

Both of their lives, and deaths, were relatively peaceful and dignified.

Lot's of things are up to personal interpretation.  For instance I would feel that you still have parents.  Your experiences with them inform your present whether they themselves are still around or not.  I on the other hand had a couple people I lived with who provided things to me and attempted to force me to be a certain way.

As a former manual laborer turned office worker, I had this desire once.  The best situation would be a balance, but that is a hard thing to find.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

My original background is A/V processing/engineering which I did for like 10 years. I was involved in codec and filter development (open source projects as well) and actual processing of video material, but after these things became boring (Content became better -> Less processing/filtering needed -> Less challenging -> Less fun... Also modern compression methods are "as good as it gets" -> Current development is more about streaming and mobile devices -> Never was a fan of quality trade-offs which are required here) I decided to do something different.

Nowadays I earn my money by building high speed trains (well, parts of the base construction) which is completely different from what I did before but more challenging and fun. A/V is down to consumption for the most part (Home cinema and enjoying good music).

Quote
I'm a "industrial mechanic", it's mostly manual work and also kinda demanding.
...
No engine blocks, not that kind of mechanic, more the engineer and metalworker kind of. I build big welded aluminum constructions (lower part of car bodys for high speed trains) which are made of dozens and dozens of pieces. Each piece has to be fitted to measure (grinding) and gets mounted in fixtures for welding (4 small parts welded to one bigger piece + 5 other bigger pieces result in a even bigger piece + some other even bigger pieces resulting in one huge piece, etc...), this involves a lot of crawling and climbing (these fixtures can get huge, train size at the end of the process) and also lots of clamping / pressing / winching / etc. as all the welding causes a lot tension (because of the induced heat and the resulting shrinkage... you would be surprised what kind of bending/deformation heat can cause) so you have to mount stuff over-size or with "negative tension" (forcing stuff in the opposite direction of the shrinkage / resulting tension), sometimes it takes several tons of force to ensure everything ends up straight in the end (tolerances for several meter long pieces are like +/- 4mm, less for the smaller parts as tolerances add up when smaller pieces are put together to a bigger one). Well, the workflow is kinda hard to explain to a "outsider" and I wish I could film it with a go-pro mounted on my helmet (would make a awesome docu), but filming is strongly prohibited (espionage).

My dad was a industrial mechanic as well, he got me into that...
But nowadays he is responsible for work-safety etc. in the industrial shed where I work.

My dad works in specialty food sales. Semi-interesting. I spent my summers in college working with him.

I however get to live demik's dream. Honestly I'm not really sure what I do (I know what my occupation is, IT, but what do I do?), but I'm unofficially the "lead" of being not sure what my job is.

I want an office job. While I enjoy manual labor I just want one steady place to go to everyday where I learn to hate my fellow worker's faces.
