it's about making your experience "special"

as far as utility is concerned, off the floor works fine.

The space pen isn't actually that great of a pen..
The ink is really meh....

If you really do often write upside down, I suppose that'd be aight, but otherwise, it's not a good ink choice.

The "japanese" Sarasa has the best ink.. the american sold version is not as good.

rrr....... fountain pens are more/less all the same at any price with the exception being flex nib and the japanese sumi cross flex-nib

so a $2 f-pen pretty much performs identically to a $200 f-pen..

From there it comes down to technique.

in fact, even PAPER makes more of a difference than the 'PEN"

This is 2013, we had this technology nailed down 10th century.

P.S. forgot to add my favorite pens.... (actually writing tool(s)), any finepoint quality felt tip pen.
My favorites are the:
- Bazic F-77 Pro (3 pack for $1) on dollar stores they come in tri-color (red/black blue) or single color.
- Sharpie Pen (fine) $1 each. And my top of the line? felt tip
- Staedtler FineLiners (4-pack, nice transparent carry case) too bad only black .1mm/.3mm/.5mm & .7mm (about $1.50-$2 each)

Got a friend who is pretty into fountain pens and just from what I've tried the difference is pretty noticeable, and I'm not even a pen connoisseur. I personally just own a safari because I don't do much writing, and even then most of that is in pencil.

Yeah, same. I loved the Sharpie pen first, then I found the Staedlers on sale, and then I picked up a Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen (in size "S") and it works great for logging my self-absorbed angst into a sketchbook-cum-journal.

But then we'll have pieces of wood and graphite floating around and getting into the sensitive space shuttle parts and -- oh, uh, yeah.

That is a Fisher Space Pen Bullet with Das Keyboard - engraving.

The best things with the Bullet are the size and the finish (sandblasted anodized aluminium, I think). I carry one in my back pocket, always. (Heard about it first on this board...)

It'd be pretty sweet if it used an MX switch to enable/retract the pen nib.

they made that up...

the time it takes for graphite dust to jam up equipment, it'd be well beyond the service life of the station.
