Is it me or Topre key rebound is actually quite loud?
« on: Sun, 01 September 2013, 09:32:41 »
So my Topre Type Heaven finally arrive.  Yayyyy first Topre !

The first thing I noticed that Topre is actually quite a bit louder than what I expected.  So I tried to paid attention to where the sound is coming from, I noticed that bottom out barely makes any sound but when the key bounces back up and the plastic hitting the roof is a bit louder than what I expected.

I guess it's not super loud by any means but maybe I expected quieter from Topre, no wonder they sell the silent version with the silicone ring to dampen the upstroke.

Now I have a few questions:

1.  Is this "loudness" specific to Topre Type Heaven or just any Topre switch in general?

2.  I vaguely remember someone made a ghetto style silencing mod.  What did he end up using again?

1. All Topres except for the Silent models sound like that

2. I believe he stamped the rings out of a rubber sheet, can't remember exactly off the top of my head.

nawh.... you can't use rubber, it becomes a dull thud rather than clack, but it's still quite LOUD.

You need some sort of silicone foam sheet.

Ahhhh I see, it's not toooooo bad anyway I think I can live with it until I find a further solution.

Though coming from MX Red I find Topre 45g uniform super tactile.  Ironically most people find this pretty much linear.

Yeah that's what I was wondering, I'll most likely replace it with Topre PBT keycaps one day but for now there isn't any source for "normal color" Topre keycaps.

All the ones left from EliteKeyboards are something like pink, yellow, orange.

are the switches inside exactly the same? i think its the switch housing that is acutally hitting against itsself that might make the noise.  We need some one to buy one of these and take it apart to compare!

I'd assume the inside should be the same, because I think they were saying the switches were the same spec or sourced from Japan.

On a random note, my g/f got a Leopold FC660C, anyone know if the number pad 0 from a full size keyboard will fit into the shorter right shift?

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40582 this was o2dazones mod. But after using dental bands (inserted into the same place), decided those felt better.

I also lubed the tracks where the legs of the slider (inside the slider housing on the bottom half of the slider), and that removed any and all rattle, noise or looseness.

Ohhhh sweet thanks dude.

Btw do you find that using dental band effect the bottom out distance?  Do you find it make it feel shorter?

Because that's one thing I hate about o-ring and Cherry profile (Though I got used to this eventually).  I prefer full travel distance.

It definitely shortens the travel, but not in a bad way. You will still feel the tactile bump (rubber collapse), so you aren't missing anything really. I suggest you give it a try.
It's cheap enough to do the mod yourself, anyways. Here is the link for some dental bands that I got off ebay

I really like it. I added 55g cups to my HHKB, and along with the lube, it's pretty phenomenal.

:P

It isn't that loud (maybe the Heaven is) when it comes up...If you push it and let go it'll be louder than when you're typing IMO but that isn't a normal way of typing...

As far as most people fine the 45g Topre linear...really?  Who is that?  If it was anywhere near linear these same people would be able to not bottom out..and that isn't happening so we know that isn't the case....there is a collapse of the dome which separates it from being linear...

30g Topre though...IMO is almost linear...the collapse of the dome is so subtle and 90% of the reason why people have the aaaaaaaa issue with variable Topre...

I don't mind variable for typing...It is quite easy on your fingers...and I notice it more when going back and forth to a uniform Topre or Cherry board....but still, I wish the light keys were slightly heavier...just for my own sake...

Well personally I find it tactile, but I know a lot of people find 45g too linear that's why they opt in for the 55g Topre.  I think the difference is probably like between people who like MX Red/Brown and people who likes buckling spring.

Though as for the 45g vs variable thing, I made sure I bought a 45g because I know I'll most likely game on this keyboard too so variable might be a little bit weird when I shift my hand position for gaming.

Funny thing though for those people who think 45g is too light that they want to go for 55g, at the moment I find 45g slightly heavy (since I came from MX Red also I'm guessing cuz the cup rubber is new need to be broken in).

So I went to my g/f's house the other day and tried out her Leopold FC660C, I have to say the PBT keycaps is actually quieter than the ABS keycaps.

Now I'd imagine the PBT on HHKB/Realforce is probably even smoother/quieter.  Maybe I'll get myself a set of Realforce keycaps one day.

I haven't found another switch aside from buckling spring that's anywhere close to the tactility of a Topre, 45g or 55g.

They might sound it but I don't believe mx blues really come close to the tactility of rubber

This. The bump on a blue is really light. It's the sound coupled with the tiny bump that fools your brain into thinking the switch is more tactile than it is.

Topre is a special kind of tactile. There's a "pop" to the keys that's hard to find anywhere else.

I find Matias Quiet Pro is actually pretty close, I mean it's still different but ALPS are one of the most tactile switches I've tried.

So the more I type on my Type Heaven, the more I want to switch this to Realforce PBT keycaps lol.

Too bad all the keycaps available now at EK are only pink, yellow and orange.  Hopefully they'll carry other colour soon.

Rumour has it that Topre is setting up new factories so hopefully they'll have more variety on keycap set later on.

Anyone know anything about this?
