When you start buying vintage keyboards that you can't interface with a modern PC, then you have hit rock bottom.

You just need to find a stash of vintage Tesla PMD-85 keyboards, and convince the fan community that these are the next hot platform for modding. Make your money back in a month.    :p

(I know I'd buy one...)

Geekhack aka Wallethack -now you know why.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I hesitated to do this, since I wasn't sure I wanted to know the answer... but here's my keyboard spending over the last 30 days:
-- $262 on an ErgoDox kit from MassDrop (still pending; will probably have to pay taxes on import)
-- $319 on a Topre Realforce (got dinged for taxes on the import).
-- $137 on a WASD bare-bones, blue keys
-- $103 on a Thick PBT dye-sub set from Feng
-- $145 on Calm Depths GB
-- $32 on DSA RGBY set GB
-- $170 on Retro DSA set (from classifieds)
-- $79 on an MKC zinc set from Feng
-- There's also a few other GBs I've committed to, but haven't been invoiced/paid yet.

And since my ultimate goal is to build my own keyboard, I've been acquiring the necessary bits:
-- $94 on electronics goods at Adafruit (teensy's, prototyping stuff)
-- $250 on electronics goods at B&E (soldering station, prototyping stuff)
-- $461 on electronics goods at Mouser (panavise, blue switches, clear switches, resisters, diodes, etc.)
-- $16 on a paper punch (for prototyping)

Grand total in 30 days:  $2069, plus some unpaid committments.

****.

that sounds like me.

1/4 of my keyboards work perfectly. 3/4 require work or are not working.

When you start buying vintage keyboards that you can't interface with a modern PC, then you have hit rock bottom.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

This is bad. I need to stop hanging out in GH!
I was happily using my 20-year old Acer alps keyboard when my friend had an extra new BWU and wanted to sell me for $90 which I happily took. From then on, my keyboard journey had seen me bought a Choc Mini, Code Keyboard, Poker 2 and now I'm venturing into Vortex PBT keycaps from feng, Round 5 SPH from 7bit and the ultimate prize, in transit somewhere, a HHKB Pro 2. I need to stop! STOP! STOP!!! Damn, I only have two hands and two computers. Why do I need so many keyboards?

I bet this will happen to me as well. Soon I'll buy my first mech and I think the journey starts there as I already thought about buying a 75% mech for traveling/carrying around purposes. Oh and the keycaps, do I need to start about the keycaps? I think GH is turning me into a mech keyboard zombie, always looking for a juicy new keyboard and keycaps.

I'm new to the whole mech keyboard thing but in the past month and a half I've gotten:

CM Storm TKL MX Blues - $90
CM Storm XT MX Reds - $80 (on sale)
Vortex PBT Caps - $40
Rainbow Caps from China - $50

I want to get more keycaps but I am trying to wait til the ones I already ordered arrive, it's so hard!!!

Already plotting what all I want to get my BF for his first mech keyboard too... haha.
