Opinions on QuickFire Stealth. High speed NKRO?
« on: Wed, 25 September 2013, 15:23:57 »
Haven't been lurking here for a while, so I'm a bit rusty and there's some new parameters as well.

With that said, I'm interested in the CM Storm QuickFire Stealth keyboard, which is a ninja version of the QF Rapid. Seems very much bang for the buck considering it's practically a cheaper Filco.

Is there any non apparent drawback? Particularly I want to know about NKRO and what's called High Speed.

I don't really need more than 6kro, but this low or high speed thing matters....right? If so, are there any tenkeyless keyboards on the market that feature high speed nkro/6kro, "stealth" if possible? Thanks.

I have the Stealth, and NKRO is just being able to press all the keys simultaneously without a lockout. Not particularly important, but it is better than 6/2/1KRO. However, the Stealth has a switching function between 6/NKRO for Mac compatibility. Also, high speed, if what I remember is correct, just means that it polls at 1000 Hz, pretty much standard mechanical keyboard.
Honestly, don't look at it differently from any other keyboard in those factors, but it is a solid board and very good looking. A single complaint might be a lack of rubber feet, but otherwise I love it.

Already know all that. Thanks anyway.

The particular question is about this new concept of "high speed USB NKRO" keyboards, independent from hz, as in the link provided.

Quote
"The Noppoo and most other NKRO over USB keyboards are low-speed, which is a bit slow for it really. Using PS/2 would be better.
Full-speed is pretty rare on keyboards - the Cooler Master CM Storm Quick Fire Pro and Quick Fire TK are about the only ones I know of (and even for those I don't yet know the details of their implementation)."

edit: actually I didn't know there's a switch to use 6kro, which should solve the possibility of having that "low speed nkro" issue introduced by the newer methods of featuring full nkro over USB, which was impossible few years ago. Thanks again.

(Full-speed not high-speed, btw - high-speed is something else again, and not used for HID).

I lose track of what CM 'board does what, or even who they get to make each one... looks like the Ultimate is a Pro with backlight, going by the specs, and the only one that that claims full-speed USB 2.0. But their specs pages are to be taken with a pinch of salt - they're still claiming that the Rapid has 1000Hz polling, even though it only uses low-speed USB, so can't :(

I do apologize, I thought you were only referring to the Pro. The Rapid does not operate at 1000hz. Rapid is USB 1.1 so is actually 125hz, I have no idea how this info was published and will be removed immediately.

Immediately  :))

Anyway, from what linkbane said about switchable NKRO on the Stealth, it sounds like a different controller than the Rapid (which was 6KRO only, IIRC). It's presumably low-speed, so who knows what godawful hackery it uses for NKRO

I see, the world of keyboards is still as confusing as always.

Which are the currently recommendable tenkeyless, 'ninja' keyboards? While the stealth seems like a steal (a filco for half the price), my concerns are it seems it doesn't have the latest tech (as potentially gimmicky it might be) and there's no specific info about it, which is the biggest one.

Bear in mind I don't like arrow keys being right next to the rest, which discards quite a lot of the current popular choices.

It's not confusing....  It's a keyboard for god sake....

There are a few basic underlying principles, and that's it...

The rest is Marketing... Apple MAGIC *

Apparently it uses some now-common hackery to make the computer think that it is multiple keyboards, allowing NKRO.

It looks like it is NKRO over PS2 only, not switchable. Basically, exactly like a Rapid. 6KRO over USB low speed.

NKRO.....If you use PS/2 connector, almost all keyboards today will be NKRO....

and for the keycaps, just get side-printed keycaps....those ABS keycaps are going to wear out anyways.

so yea, this stealth thing is a gimmick...

Um no. There are still plenty of keyboard that doesn't use diodes in their matrix.

That is incorrect. I am using it currently and am able to type with over ten inputs with no issue. It is switchable via Fn+Esc.

What's the bus speed it connects at?
