I got a couple PBT spacebars for my HHKB. Thought I was going to go all black caps, but I like the red spacebar for now.

Show Image

Looks good! Maybe you need a blank red esc or ctrl to go along with it? ;)

should I get type-s or regular? considering I am planing to buy the realforce 55g as well.

It is totally preference based. Do you want a slightly quieter keyboard, and are you willing to pay the additional cost? Both regular and typeS hhkbs are great, so it really comes down to preference. You can always buy a regular hhkb and then silence it yourself after (although I prefer the Type S because it comes silenced nicely from the factory).

Thanks. If I keep the red spacebar, I will definitely add something else red to it. What that red thing will be is still up for discussion.

Another test, still some ''friction''
I think it comes from the spring

My stock HHKB sounds pretty similar to that. Quite a bit of friction, unlike either of my RF 87Us.

Going to lubricate the stems and see if that helps.

yeah this is a big difference between hhkb and realforce boards.

please share your results! :)

The other one is a black one so I'll definitely be hanging onto it. Sorry.  :(

Welcome to Geekhack!

Most (maybe slightly more than 50%) seem to prefer the non-silenced version - that Topre thock!

The thock is one thing that HHKB owners say most often that they like.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. I haven't tried a silenced version, yet.

I want to so I can see if I'll miss the thock. Maybe I should buy the new ducky topre board.

before, i figured people meant that the bottoming out was the thock. because the upstroke sounds more like a clack to me.
but i guess if people like that upstroke sound, then you obviously don't want the silencing.

personally, i feel like the clack from the upstroke overwhelms the sound of the downstroke too much.
the dampening does not mess with the downstroke, and that's exactly the sound of topre switches that i like so much :)
non-silenced definitely has its charm, but for me it's the type-s RF and type-s HHKB :D

I've been in this forum for one day and i have already been convinced that i need to get an HHKB, i just spent quite a bit on the parts to do my own cherry mx clear board , that i dont regret because i do want to build some of my own keyboards, but i'm going to seriously consider an HHKB as soon as i have the money. It seems like it would be the best daily driver for me as i have moderate CTP like nerve issues in both of my wrist's.

The HHKB Pro 2 is my favorite keyboard, although I put quite a few others into my rotation. Although I like the solid feel of a plate-mounted Topre board such as the RF87U, I find the HHKB with its case-mounted switches to be less fatiguing, perhaps because it is more yielding.

To help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist posture can be more important the the choice of keyboard. It is important to keep the forearm, wrist, and hand in a straight line and not to use a wrist-rest while typing.

I had to get rid of my wrist wrest because when i get a bit tired i get lazy and rest my wrists on it while typing, so for me its better to just not have one, and i have been working on my typing posture which has helped. a lot of my issues are from an injury caused by a window at a young age and it not healing properly. I acctually like clear switches the most out of everything i've tried because i dont bottom them out, which is much less fatiguing for me. If i had someone near by with a HHKB id borrow it for a day or two to see how i like it. but when i have the money i may just get one, if i dont like it or the amount it helps me doesn't justify the cost for me i can always sell it.

I like boxy things, but that one has a defective space bar.

And a few screws loose too.

It takes a lot to make an HHKB not a sex symbol. This case does it though.

There are two "black" versions of the HHKB Pro 2 currently available. One is printed (black on dark gray) and the other is non-printed (dark gray). You can also still get black or blank black keycap sets for the HHKB Pro 2.

@Ideus: They are stock white keys from a white HHKB. They look yellow because I use low-wattage incandescent task lamps in my study, and under those lights, the white takes on a yellow cast. I also use a potato camera on "auto" with no proper compensation for white balance. The other colors in the pic (red, blue, black/dark gray) look about the way they should.

I do have some definite yellow Topre caps that I bought as a complete set on eBay, but these complete sets in various colors (white, yellow, red, blue, green) have become scarce to non-existent. I hope that Topre will decide to re-issue their previous sets and introduce some new ones as well.

I will soon be joining the elite ranks of Type-S owners. Please post recommendations on how to best savour and enhance my experience as well as my exit from plebdom.

I love the black on white, all the photos of these make me wish I got a white HHKB instead of a black. Maybe I need a second HHKB...

if you live in the US, elitekeyboards.com is probably the cheapest. otherwise, you might want to look into a proxy.
the geekhack user Evo_Spec helped me proxy my HHKB to me, which went extremely smooth. i recommend approaching him if you're thinking about using a proxy.
for me, it was way cheaper doing it this way, now i don't have to cry every time i look at my HHKB :))

Also take a look at the classifieds or mechmarket, can usually find ones in good shape or fairly new around $180 shipped. If you want brand new though, elitekeyboards.com is the way to go

I'm typing on a pro 2 right now, just received mine today. I'm a little sad that I have to use my computer's built-in dvorak setting, because I'm so used to using fully programmable boards, but I will be doing hasu's mod soon, so that should take care of that. So far the glory of topre is quite nice, but I'm not sure if it's enough to switch totally off MX. I'm still a big fan of zealios with OG cherry, can't really beat that. As of now I would say that topre will certainly enter my rotation, but not dominate it.

For me, the HHKB Pro 2 experience is the unification of the 60% form factor, Prof. Wada's layout, Topre switches, beautiful PBT keycaps, and overall styling and design. If one thing dominates for me, it is the layout. I think if I were not going to use the Wada layout, I might seek the Topre experience through other keyboards, such as the Leopold FC660C or the RF87U.

Some projects on the back burner include building 60% keyboards with a HHKB layout but using Alps, Matias, or purple Zealio 65g switches. It will be interesting to find out if I like these combinations as well as the genuine HHKB Pro 2.

Basically, this.

I do like the original Professional more than the 2 though. The logo is great and I don't have the useless USB hub on the back.

Just got my HHKB! I'm already in love.
It just feels, I have to quote the Keychatter review here, "like piano keys". This Keyboard is awesome!

Welcome to Geekhack!

Nice keyboard :)

Nice desk!

There's also a thread if you want to post more pictures of your watch.

Thanks for the welcome! :)
Also Happy Holidays guys!

I am getting more used to the lightness of the keys (I tend to use heavier switches). I like this board a lot. Still not gonna go crazy and sell all my mx boards though I think.

Alrighty! Few questions,

1. Anyone pairing the HHKB Pro2 with a Logitech MX Master mouse?

2. Anyone prefer the HHKB Pro2 more than the Type S?

3. Anyone using Bluetooth with their HHKB Pro2? If so, how? Hasu's controller require a separate purchase for the battery and the Enebrick seem to lack power.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Yeah, give it some time.  You probably won't sell them because it would mean admitting defeat, but you'll consider it.
