(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Many's the night I was up late seeking terrible vengeance on those miserable little insects.

Frequent were the little blood stains across the walls and ceilings.

My blood, I have to admit.

But you get the picture.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. Mosquitos have a really annoying habit of flying right by your ear. I wouldn't mind them biting me if only they didn't wake me up with that terrible sound.

You hear that, and are suddenly jolted awake.

Your hand juts out and jabs at the light switch.

Blinding light floods the room, banishing any thought of sleep as you screw up your eyes and try to see a tiny black dot moving near your pillow.

Second pass, and nothing.

The seconds stretch into minutes, and still nothing.

Your eyes become used to the light, and you start to move your gaze upwards.

Suddenly you see a small speck on the wall, up near the ceiling, on the other side of the room.

While you are squinting your eyes and planning the best approach across the detritus that accumulates on the bedroom floor, you hear that bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz in your other ear.

Damn!  The little bugger must have crept up behind you!

Swinging around, you glare at the wall, the floor, the ceiling, anywhere, your eyes darting frantically around the room.

Without pausing your frantic eye moments, your hand reaches for the can of fly spray that you know is there.

Still nothing.

A yawn struggles to escape, and a quick sideways flick of the eyes towards the clock radio makes you realise that you could still get a couple of hours sleep until it is time to start your day's activities.

Keep searching and squish, or spray?

It is too early in the morning to make decisions like that.

i came through all stages of the mosquito war: bare hands, flappers, vacuum cleaners... after living for a while in an apartment with 4.5m high ceiling and year round supply of mosquitoes, i switched from mechanical anti-mosquito weapons to foggers. and raid's indoor fogger did the job well: mosquitoes tend to slow down in the air, making mournful sound, and then fall down and die.

They are attracted to your breath due to the minute amount of CO2 that's expelled.  Million years of natural engineering, they've been around since the dinosaurs and I bet they'll still be here long after we annihilated ourselves.

I have an industrial mozzie zapper (like at work) that kills them off.  Plus I live up in the hills far away from any bodies of water.  It's pretty dry here hence little chance of being disturbed and/or bitten.  I try to stay away from any chemical cocktails designed to kill them because it it kills them imagine what it can do to you over several years of use?

The bedroom needs to be clean and free from any contaminants and poisons so that you get a decent night's sleep.

This.

A clothes-pin-rubber-band gun is an excellent weapon against insects.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

My favourite is the single-handed "grab-em-out-the-air-and-squish-em-in-one-movement" technique. Got quite proficient with both hands, although I'm still faster with my right. If I'm feeling patient I let them land on me and then squish. I don't mind them biting (with one exception), just hate the noise.

The exception is that they seem to think my nostrils are the be all and end all of fine dining spots, so they try to fly up them every chance they get.... Inside my ears are a 2nd favourite of theirs. This is how my hatred for them began.

Good job on the two-in-one! You will soon be a master, grasshopper. But first try chopsticks.

I had an infestation once when I didn't wash my dishes for a month (disgusting, I know..) and what I found works is a pair of flip flops and do a clapping motion with it.

One exercise on your path to perfection:

1. Grab a chopstick
2. Strike a flyby mosquito's head
3. Repeat until it is unconscious
4. ..............
5. Profit!!!!!!11111

Massdrop keeps having sales on that one salt gun, I've been really tempted but my room is like completely sterile of all insects ._.

impossible...  for example when spiders are born. they're almost microscopic.  You eat several pounds of bugs a year, and you don't even know it..

Baby huntsmen spiders are about 4mm from leg tip to leg tip.

This one time we had an egg sack hatch in the bathroom and there were about 100 baby spiders (yes, I counted them, after spraying them - didn't want 100 huntsmen in the house).

Yeah.

The biggest one I have seen was about 20cm from leg tip to leg tip.

Big bastards, some of them.

Personally I'd prefer the mosquitos.

The old Huntsmen are fantastic.  There's a Grandaddy (or Momma) downstairs in the basement at my place and it always climbs the wall and picks up it's two front legs to point at me ( I have huge hands and this spider is bigger than my hand easily).  It's like "hey you, what the hell do you want here" I just love that attitude.  They really aren't scared of anything including the Staffy that absolutely refuses to go down in the cellar once it came across that spider from hell  ;D .

I've got great respect for them because they eat out all the cockroaches, earwigs, moths and centipedes that use to reside there.  In fact since he/she moved in there I can't find a single insect crawling around anymore.  That is why this spider stays rent free at my place  :thumb: .

Uh don't remind me!

There was a movie something a couple of decades ago that showed a woman lying down, and a spider fell off the ceiling right into her mouth.  I STILL check the ceilings when I walk into a room.

The Biggie as I call him/her stays in the basement because it's got food there.  Hence it'll stay there until it eats everything in site.  I have never been scared of them because I kept them as pets when I was younger living up near Newman.

They were always easier to keep than any cat or dog and all they needed was the odd cockie or moth every other week or so.

Once one did fall on my head when I was about 12 and it was in shock as it scurried around trying to look for a way to jump off.  Just never panic when it lands on you because it senses your fear and will bite if threatened in any way.  They avoid people in general and you can never get bitten unless you provoke it.  So don't.

I've already been bitten twice by a Bard!ck (for real) and a Western Brown snake.  They only knew what it was once they swabbed the bitten area to find out what got me.

Both times the bastards bit me on the calf of my right leg.  Not at the same time though.  I got bitten the first time at the workshop in 2008 when I was walking through lots of Caterpillar Gaskets and Belts and felt something sharp on the back of my right calf muscle.  I just thought it was the gasket coverings which are sharp but when I walked out into the daylight area my workmate said there's some blood on the back of my leg.  I looked at it and sure enough 2 red blood holes seaping away.  Instantly was shipped out to Royal Perth via the Flying doctors.

I can tell you one thing for sure the heart was pumping hard and the head feels like it wants to explode.  You basically feel like you've downed 4 gallons of vodka and everything hurts from the waist down.

The second bite which was in 2011 by a Western Brown which was under my desk in my office at around 3AM in the morning.  I was stupid because I normally look under the desk to see if anything was curled up ready to strike but when you're tired you forget.  Anyway after the bite I woke up real fast and got another free flight to Royal Perth again.  This bastard really made a mess of my right calf because around the bite everything started to clog and turn purple fast.  I was lucky to save my leg that night because people can lose a limb when these critters bite you.

I think I'm the only one working at my company that's been bitten this much and survived.  The funny thing also is that the doctors told me I'm now more resistant to snake bites and should work in the snake milking section, at the Reptile Park.

In the bedroom, there is the ancient lampshade, been there for millions of years. Anyway, the fliies like to smash their heads into it, even if all the windows are close, all you hear is;
thud, thwack, thud, thud, thud, thwack.

Soooo annoying.

So i just shake it until their brains are outside their bodies, then scoop the leftovers off the carpet.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

If he's actually on your face just blow through your mouth, the air will scare him away because he knows that something is under his body/legs.

It's a great place.  Also remember here all medical care is free (if you're a citizen).  Hence don't worry about anything because you're covered by our national health scheme which nearly every country has now.

So don't be afraid because they (snakes and spiders) will never intentionally harm you unless your stupid, which I'm one of those who are extremely dumb. By rights I should of died and get taken out of the gene pool.  Hence it helps to winnow out the less suitable in this world  ;) .
