Rosewill RK-9000 with Clears

After I completed my Das I got to work this past weekend on modding my Rosewill(that use to have browns). I had been dying to try out the Clears on a full keyboard after I had gotten one in a sample pack from WASD. I got extremely lucky when I got that sample pack because just shortly after my urge for a full Clear keyboard came to, MK.com became a supplier for switches so I jumped on it immediately. I ordered 110 (for potential mishaps) and a desolder hand pump from Amazon and just went for it. I had a lot of fun doing this one and a full keyboard of clears turned out to be very nice but I am experiencing more fatigue in my hands in the longer sessions. I will also note that the clears I got from MK.com have a very audible ping when bottoming out & close to bottoming out. I do not remember  my brown switches having this problem but it doesn't really bother me.

I really wish I had a better camera for this sort of thing.






Now I have a bag of spare brown switches and a set of key caps I don't know what to do with.... anyone have a Phantom plate for sale?

It seems like just about every one of my switches does it. The browns that use to be in the keyboard didn't have any ping except maybe one or two, but those were on the numpad if I remember correctly.

As the switches break in, the ping might mellow.  You might also need to desolder, pop them open, and go to lube town.  I know I much prefer Krytox lubed Clears to stock Clears.

I'm all about bang for the buck! I will say, I think the Rosewill is built better than my Das. The plastic casing on the Rosewill feels a lot stronger and more durable than that of the Das. When  I was taking apart the Das, the top piece of the case was very soft and bent very easily. Some of the tabs that I barely applied any pressure on the Das to take it apart turned a whiter color, like most bad quality plastics do, and felt like they would break off any second. I got away without breaking anything but I don't think I'll be taking it apart again unless there is some catastrophic failure. I am 100% confident I could take apart the Rosewill dozens of times without any mishaps or damage. The only part about the Rosewill I hate is the USB connector on the PCB itself. I'm considering getting some glue to keep it in place, hard wiring a cable, or something somewhere in between.

I'm pretty mobile with mine. I bring it home from work every now and then and clean/use it in place of my Das. I've never really had any issues with it not having connectivity or any intermittent disconnects but it is very loose. I believe there are a couple of leads that could be soldered on the USB connector that aren't (this maybe have been on the original revision) that hold it in place but I recall looking at my connect and did not see any pads that those leads could be soldered to. I've heard stories of people taking their keyboard apart and still having the warranty cover any issues. I guess the USB connector is a wide enough/people have been loud enough over for them to fix/replace it warranty or not.

I lubricate my switch springs with Victorinox Multi-Tool oil--haven't heard any pingy sounds since I started doing that.  I also line the space under the PCB with some foamy rubber shelf liner for sound absorption.  I think I know what you're saying regarding some switches sounding differently, like the spring sticks to the stem and falls off rapidly or something--hard to explain.  I've had it happen with MX Blues too.  It's a bit time consuming, but it helps to actuate every swtich a few times once you click them into the switch plate to check for uniformity.  I discovered a couple of bad Clears that way in my old batch--they had some really smoothed out defective bump feeling (unlubricated even).

Thats nice.. Yeah late 2012 the usb was glued on each side to hold it in better. But of course some suppliers would still have 2012 models in their warehouse. But it being almost 2014 I am assuming I got one of the glued ones from Newegg. But ya never know. I asked Rosewill and they said there shouldnt be any of the old ones there.  But I got the warranty anyway.

it's such a trivial problem to fix... I'd consider it a non-issue...

Ive just never soldered before, but I read the thread on here and watched youtube videos it looks super easy. Also to just add glue would be super easy too. They just add one dot on each side.

Soldering is pretty easy, but can be daunting when you are first starting. I find it to be one of those things that is almost relaxing to do. It is a very useful skill to have as it can be useful in a lot of different hobbies or do it yourself kind of things.
