Ducky Shine 3 weird Sound
« on: Thu, 07 November 2013, 13:16:06 »
Hello folks!

As I think my problem gets lots in the Simple Questions Simple Answers topic I'm opening up this topic. I hope someone can help me with this or explain me that I don't need to worry that much.

I copy paste what I wrote in the other topic and modified it a little bit for better understanding. Please help.

Yesterday I recieved my new Shine 3 with brown switches :) I am really happy about this mech, but I experience some strange sound noise while typing.
So this question mostly goes out to ducky owners, as I think this maybe a ducky related thing.

Yesterday I've experience a metal-ish sound or reverberation after I bottom out on the keys. I tested this on a lot of the keys with this sound. I can hear the sound even when I just "tickle" (something like touch-typing) the keys although it's considerably quieter, I can still hear it.

What I've tried so far: (I'm using the stock keycaps which are delivered with the keyboard)
- Putting a mat underneath the mech but the sound is still present although it's a little dampened.
- I pulled one of the keycaps and wanted to look at the switch. When I press down the switch I hear the sound, it's quieter but still there (tested this just now) and with the keycaps on it seems the sound gets louder.

I heard of modding the mech with some kind of foam putting it in between PCB and case from BlueBär. I guess this is my next step and I'll try this.

Here is a sound example: (I'm not really pressing that hard bottoming out)
http://www46.zippyshare.com/v/12537360/file.html

Hopefully someone knows this and can calm me down that this can be easily fixed.

Additional Info: For the first few hours of typing and enjoying my new mech (thanks GH for enlightening me! :) ) I didn't experience anything like that metal-ish sound while typing. I recieved the mech in the morning and the metal-ish sound came in the evening and I didn't eat or spilled anything near her and if I did I used a plastic cover to protect it from the food and drops of water.

Somehow this makes me crazy

Cheers,
genki

That sounds like key ping. It's common on a lot of boards. It should settle a little to where it's slightly quieter. Although if you just bought it you should have warranty.

Thanks HUNTERANGEL121, at least now I know how it is called. Maybe I'll take my warranty and replace it as it seems every single key is pinging very loud and it bothers me a lot while typing, especially when it's quiet around me.
And if the replacement is still pingin I'll try the mod with the foam thingy.

If anybody else can tell me something or how to investigate this or repair it feel free to reply!

Wow, whole board? I've only seen a one or two keys that are pinging. Hopefully where ever you bought it from can sort that out. Really a great board. On my K90 it pings but I always use a headset no matter what and usually have music playing also.

I wouldn't mind if it were only a few keys but unfortunately yes, it's the whole board :( and it drives you crazy hearing that ping =/
I'll write the company I bought it from and hope they'll replace it as they seem very accomodating.

I've read the pinging comes from the spring inside the switches (Link). Is it possible it's a failure factory-wise as it affects the whole board?

Prior to lubing and stickering the brown switches on my Shine II I had a few that were pinging.  I tried to isolate the part of the switch responsible for the pinging.  It was either the stem, spring, housing, or a combination of those parts.

In the end I observed that the lower switch housing would ping regardless of what stem, spring, or top housing was installed.

So it is an inevitable thing when buying a mech? If I understand you correctly it would seem that way.

Either way I don't think that it's normal for the whole board to ping.

Have you tried switching the spring in the switch? Is this even possible?

The switches are mass produced and go through quality control so I assume that switches on the keyboard are within the acceptabel normal tolerances.  While some switches just make more noise than others, we are sometimes just oversensitive...hence I stickered and lubed my Shine 2.

However, it is definitely not normal if all the switches ping.  There may have been something wrong with that entire batch of switches or something.

AFAIK, you need to open up the switch to access the spring.

Also, I just realized that your keyboard is new so it might be going through a break-in phase.

ah... ALL mx-switches ping to an extent...

it's a matter of how loud..

What's your ambient sound level.. you can check with a phone app..

When I had all my harddrives on my room did 40db, and I couldn't hear my ping.

But now that I've stopped competitively seeding, my room is 30db, and I started to hear more ping..

That's not correct..

put your ears up to the switch.. hold it down.. lift your hand as fast as you possibly can... EVERY SWITCH PINGS..

Hehe the winter of pings, very nice. Is this a seasonal thing like the recent spillages?

That's not correct..

It's okay if it pings, but for me it seems very loud compared to the ping I would accept. The example I uploaded is when I type very slightly and as I am bottoming out kinda hard it seems the ping is much more present. And at my time lurking around here it seems like the pings shouldn't be that loud and if the pings are only on some of the keys. So with your definition only some keys should ping "too loud" and the others are just much quieter.

I'm not at home right now, but my room is pretty quiet, no street in front of my window or sidewalks and at night I think a lot are asleep or quiet themselves. I can hear the ping even when I'm watching TV and I do not concentrate that hard to hear the ping out in all the noise.

What do you mean with "break-in phase"?

The Ping Report basically NEVER STOPS among MX adopters..

you are correct that it can ping both on the Upstroke and down stroke.. Usually it's the upstroke that people hear, because the down stroke sound is masked by the keycap striking the housing.

What do you know it does ping on the upstroke :)) I've only ever heard it when pressing down.

I learn something new everyday!

i keep listening to that track, and i think you are making stuff up. The only sound there is the normal clack clack clack of keys being pressed. Maybe my elderly ears are too worn out to hear what your youngster ears can hear. Have you tried going to a couple of rock and roll concerts? Something to take the edge off your hearing?

it's the high pitched boing-boing sound that springs make.. similar to a ring..

Exactly that and on the audio track I am not pressing like if I'm typing, while typing it's louder and more present on every key.
And I've been to some concerts, my ears are still fine  :thumb:

I will try the warranty and am sending it back. I hope this wont take too long to sort out, I am already missing her :O

Does lubing the switches help with the ping sound?

it does.. the lube will make it a bit stickier to the central hub.. it will also reduce resonance because you've added mass..

now.. how much reduction.. vs.. the 6 hours it'll probably take to do this..  you decide..

Damn I love your emoticons!

Are there other options to improve the ping that you wouldn't hear them that loud anymore? Other than the lubing I know of using foam to mod and reduce the ping.

Finally I recieved my replacement keyboard and unfortunately the space bar key broke in the delivery and the packet itself looked like it was "tampered with" or something like that. May I say that I have a lot of luck with my first keyboard :|

I hope so too, it kinda ruins my happiness finally getting and owning a mech. And it still pings on the whole keyboard, but they didn't here it when they tested it. So I guess either they replace it again or I'll try modding it to reduce that ping sound.

Thanks it helped a lot.
Finally I got my keyboard back last friday. It works magnificent, no key ping, no broken spacebar and the packet itself was in very good condition. Seems like the keyboard is finally in the state I wanted and thought it would be. Typing on it right now is totally different than before and I'm enjoying it, hopefully I won't get such ruckus a second time when I'll order my next keyboard.

The Ping Report basically NEVER STOPS among MX adopters..

you are correct that it can ping both on the Upstroke and down stroke.. Usually it's the upstroke that people hear, because the down stroke sound is masked by the keycap striking the housing.

there be no pinging on the Widow no matter how hard I slammed her, again and again and again!
