when I was young my parents used to say "I can't believe your generation is going to take care of us" - now I'm saying the same thing to my nephews, etc.

What is "old"?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yep and I'm looking forward to it. At least when I'm 60 I'll have an excuse for being such a narky prick.

What is "old"?

I interpret it as a state of mind...

There are people well into their 50s going to clubs, partying, dress funny

I have a whole plan if I live to be 80+, which at the rate I'm headed I'll probably have heart failure or possibly a stroke around 50. But IF I live to be so old everything hurts and I have nothing to do, I wanna get the purest heroine available just to see what all the fuss is about. Maybe it'll kill me or I'll become addicted, but who cares since death is right around the corner anyway!

a part of getting old = losing interest in things that used to like in your teens/early adulthood

videogames, sports, big social events

when I was young my parents used to say "I can't believe your generation is going to take care of us" - now I'm saying the same thing to my nephews, etc.

I find myself thinking this about my generation. '89 baby reporting in

Weirdly I'm actually finally getting into sports at 28. Hated the stuff all my life and suddenly I'm crazy about NFL.

Yes.

I feel like i got older, faster, than anyone i've ever met (unless my memory is failing...).

This is clearly Obama's fault.

I'm at an age where I can't get girls in their 20's anymore. THAT'S an age turning point. They don't start becoming interesting until around 28+ or so anyhow…. but I'm probably only able to manage late 30's now. But I haven't been out and about on the prowl for about 2 years (life trauma does that).

Yes, I'm old. Not getting, I'm here. Once you hit 40, you get initiated into the club and get the card, etc.

I drink hot water sometimes, too, tp4. It's like drinking tea without the leafy flavoring. :D

To be honest, I embrace it. I told my wife I want a wooden cane and a wool cardigan sweater for Christmas. I don't think I will get either. She doesn't want to be married to an "old man." Heh.

Haha not at all, people think me and my friends are weird as **** for not following Australian rules footy. Me and my room-mate are both Saints fans and my other friend goes for the Bears, I just picked the Saints when I started because I drafted Brees. Lucky choice considering I had no idea what I was doing at the time :P

i have a cane. but i still can seduce a 18 years old girl.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I'm approaching 30 and it feels utterly bizarre. When I was a kid I thought at a certain point (presumably in your 20's) you'd feel like an adult, that it would follow looking and acting like one I guess. But I don't feel that's happened. Like, I feel as though my growth has been stunted, even though it hasn't. I own my own house, rent out properties, have a responsible job, travel, been intimate with dozens of different women, etc. All the other mundane adult things, bar getting married and having kids which a) I'm not sure is something I ever want and b) feel utterly unprepared for for the aforementioned reasons. Despite all this, and living a fairly successful adult life I still feel essentially identical to the first summer after I left school, was unemployed and living with my parents.

On the upside, I still manage to pass for 19-21 or so, and people are regularly shocked to find out I'm 28 (29 in a couple months) which is alright I guess.

Yes.

I feel like i got older, faster, than anyone i've ever met (unless my memory is failing...).

This is clearly Obama's fault.

Internet..

allows one to see the world in a compressed informational format..

we cease to find nuance in experience.. due to the large amount of patterning our brain's been subjected to.

I could be wrong about this.... and the internet has broken my brain..

It's broken all of our brains. While in class I see about 10 people looking for the answer on Google, while I'm the only one using a fr**cking textbook. We all know that anything is at out fingertips. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like for you when you were a child. No internet? I would insane. Quite frankly, I think we're all screwed. Americans are becoming too lazy to do anything on their own. It's already been shown by the our cars. EVERYONE DRIVES AUTOMATIC! Do you know how hard it is to find a manual? It's nearly impossible. It's not only the internet though, it's what society has made acceptable for teens to where and what to buy. 14 year olds look like they're 18.... This is truly pathetic and I really feel bad for the U.S.

Otherway around over here, theyre all manual. It seems pretty strage when you hear how all [most] Americans drive automatic.  When over healre everything is manual.

North American roads lend themselves better to automatic transmission in fairness, it's all wide lanes, traffic lights, mostly straight, level roads in the heavily populated states. It's not like the UK/Europe where you might be scrabbling around roads designed for medieval foot traffic in heavy congestion, or trying to climb some single track country lane covered in ice (in the latter case Americans generally have massive 4x4's with snowchains for that, rather than attempting it in a BMW 3 series, as is the case here).

Mmm.. for me driving has always been something I "have" to do.. not something I "want" to do..  And so manual would just make the chore more difficult..

I think in many other countries where vehicular travel is seen as more of a "fun" activity and "less" ubiquitous... they'd probably prefer the more engaging experience with manual..

But for the typical American, it's like sweeping in the morning or doing the dishes.. if you could do "less" of it, or do it "more easily", you would...

It's really not out of laziness.

For me at the young age of 16, I really like it an an automatic to me is straight up boring. And later in life when I get a car that I can track, I will track it.
I don't really know how people find it a chore to be honest. I get that it gets annoying. But sometimes it really helps to have it. Well in Miami it doesn't really matter. The steeps incline we drive through is usually our drive ways...

All I see automatic is an excuse to be on your phone while driving. The amount of times I've seen someone driving a manual they have never pulled a phone out. Then looks to my left and all I see are phones being pulled out at a light. Easier I understand, but what if you could make something more fun? Wouldn't you? I guess I'm praising manual now... Even though I own an automatic currently... Really boring....

But wouldn't that make more sense to have auto cars with lots of little windy streets so you don't have to keep changing gear all the time?

And wide straight roads for manual so you can choose your gear and just drive?

Driving isn't any less of a chore in other countries, it's simply that a manual offers more control, better acceleration, etc. Automatics can be frustrating and conversely more work having to frequently blip the throttle to make the gearbox change rather than just change gear yourself. As I said it's it depends on the types of roads, also. Most Americans live in suburbs, the roads are relatively straight, there's traffic lights rather than roundabouts, and the daily commute is a fairly straightforward route and often sitting in traffic anyway. Compare that to the UK where a commute to work can involve transitioning back and forth between congested urban roads (some of them designed in the middle ages), dual carriageways/motorways, single track rural lanes, etc. where an automatic is just a hinderance.

Not really, on a wide, straight road where you're accelerating and decelerating gradually an automatic gearbox can handle things for you fine, but when the opposite is the case and you need to change speed more frequently and faster a manual is superior whilst an automatic gives you a general loss of control (to a dangerous extent in frosty/icy conditions), puts more strain on the engine, wears the brakes down faster since there's no engine breaking... - things like that.

Yeah, automatics are at their absolute worst on ice/frost. I used to drive for a living, and went to a lot of remote locations with untreated roads, and you have to pick the highest gear you can without stalling to get the lowest amount of torque possible and don't even think about touching your brakes, and instead use gear changes to slow down/stop (impossible in an automatic). Sometimes it would be impossible just to move from standing without being in third gear. In an automatic you end of wheelspinning all over the place, completely out of control. But again, this isn't such a big deal in the colder parts of North America because everyone there still uses things like snowchains (which I think were probably last used in the UK in the 1970's) and/or drive massive 4x4 trucks.
