Yes.

I feel like i got older, faster, than anyone i've ever met (unless my memory is failing...).

This is clearly Obama's fault.

Internet..

allows one to see the world in a compressed informational format..

we cease to find nuance in experience.. due to the large amount of patterning our brain's been subjected to.

I could be wrong about this.... and the internet has broken my brain..

Show Image

It's broken all of our brains. While in class I see about 10 people looking for the answer on Google, while I'm the only one using a fr**cking textbook. We all know that anything is at out fingertips. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like for you when you were a child. No internet? I would insane. Quite frankly, I think we're all screwed. Americans are becoming too lazy to do anything on their own. It's already been shown by the our cars. EVERYONE DRIVES AUTOMATIC! Do you know how hard it is to find a manual? It's nearly impossible. It's not only the internet though, it's what society has made acceptable for teens to where and what to buy. 14 year olds look like they're 18.... This is truly pathetic and I really feel bad for the U.S.

Otherway around over here, theyre all manual. It seems pretty strage when you hear how all [most] Americans drive automatic.  When over healre everything is manual.

Mmm.. for me driving has always been something I "have" to do.. not something I "want" to do..  And so manual would just make the chore more difficult..

I think in many other countries where vehicular travel is seen as more of a "fun" activity and "less" ubiquitous... they'd probably prefer the more engaging experience with manual..

But for the typical American, it's like sweeping in the morning or doing the dishes.. if you could do "less" of it, or do it "more easily", you would...

It's really not out of laziness.
Show Image

Driving isn't any less of a chore in other countries, it's simply that a manual offers more control, better acceleration, etc. Automatics can be frustrating and conversely more work having to frequently blip the throttle to make the gearbox change rather than just change gear yourself. As I said it's it depends on the types of roads, also. Most Americans live in suburbs, the roads are relatively straight, there's traffic lights rather than roundabouts, and the daily commute is a fairly straightforward route and often sitting in traffic anyway. Compare that to the UK where a commute to work can involve transitioning back and forth between congested urban roads (some of them designed in the middle ages), dual carriageways/motorways, single track rural lanes, etc. where an automatic is just a hinderance.
My auto only has engine braking since the tranny was fixed but the guy didn't exactly make smooth. 1st and 2nd brake for me lol. I use my car in tiptronic sometimes it feels like a manual, but it isn't, it takes sometime to change gears like myself, but to downshift with tiptronic it isn't exactly smooth and easy to accelerate while the car is thinking about the clutch. My feet are faster to change gears....
But it's not a chore in Brazil... There is only one car that is automatic that I have seen and it was a new car for someone who had a disability with their legs so braking was moved to the steering column via a lever. Going up the steep roads in Belo, an automatic would change gears mid climb, thus making you lose all the power.

The older I get, the less I care about getting laid and the more I care about money sleep and hobbies. Also time seems to pass by faster and faster each year.

Thats actually a real thing, and I cant find the article I read about it but simply put; when you are 1 year old that first year of your life took up 100% of your life. By your second birthday that same period of time only took up 50% of your life, if you see where im going, Its pretty interesting to think about.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

I fail to see how driving an automatic car is representative of laziness.  At least, in a way that carries negative connotations.  If that's the argument you're making then you must be against pretty much all technological improvement simply because it makes our lives easier.  And for some reason you've arbitrarily chosen a point just before the 1930s or so as the "neutral" point for vehicles.  Why not say we're lazy for using cars at all, automatic or manual?

I get the point you're trying to make, but I do find it rather goofy to criticize people for making their lives easier.

Ah I see now. Well I understand that. But is it really that much harder to learn the manual? Same way that the U.S. and 2 other countries use the imperial system? Why not go to metric?

Car.. goes forward.. goes reverse... turns left, turns right..

More than I need. the main bottle neck to driving is the road itself and other drivers..

NO amount of manual handling will make it much better..

And if we talk about time.. I can make back the few minutes I lose on the road by watching less TV,  drive a little slower.. and not die because some idiot thinks he's fast and furious dropping gears to make his car loud to impress his girl friend..

It's not much harder, no.  But people don't see the need.  I personally learned to drive manual because I wanted to have more fun driving.  For some reason, most people don't see manual cars as a benefit.  I think (and I'm speculating at this point) that driving is a more long-distance chore-type activity for most Americans, compared to a more close-knit European society where they either drive shorter distances or do more driving percentage-wise for fun.  Could be totally off on that though, so feel free to correct me.  :)

As for the metric issue, I think that's just people being stubborn.  I'm a huge fan of metric, but it's not a part of my daily life, so I still struggle with knowing off the top of my head how the measurements relate to my every day life.  I know that ~22C is room temperature, 1 metre is almost the same as 1 yard, and I can approximate 1 cm decently well (at least as well as I can approximate an inch).  But I would still require a fair amount of time to transition over and be able to use it daily without converting between things in my head to get a usable relate-able figure to compare to.  And I know for many others it would be even worse because they've never used the metric system (I use it regularly in school).

I'm all for switching to metric.  It would be a non-trivial transition, but I think it would benefit us in the long run.  But there are so many hurdles to getting that accomplished (infrastructure, industry, education), I think it would take quite some time.

I feel old. I'm sitting in my room, rotting away dreaming of the what would-have-been while the world is running off to its doom outside. Much like a person in a retirement home.

be very grateful that you don't have to look up something in the paper version of Encyclopædia Britannica anymore. be very grateful that your country has such a road network that you can get almost anywhere not even thinking about shifting gears. be very grateful that if you buy manual, nobody will be able to hijack your car.

bad for the u.s. he feels, pffffff.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I am grateful for the life I have but certain things are making people 'not very smart'. The internet can be a great tool, not so great tool when it comes to trying to save some money(talking all of geek hackers) I really want like 10 other boards lol. But people don't use it to their benefits it seems. Now it seems that people are too lazy to look something up. I see it a lot when doing group projects, most of the group sits on FaceBook, and Twitter. It really bothers me since I'm usually the one that does all the work. Now tell me if I'm wrong on this, you're doing a project and you are looking stuff up, you tell someone to do a section and they don't. I understand that these roads can take me places. I don't bash on auto. I do like it for ease of use per say. But when you travel to South America; even rentals don't have auto. People are more outgoing in other places compared to the US. I understand that we have to be grateful.

I don't think people are more/less smart "because of the internet"... If anything, the mere fact that information is more easily accessible should increase the scope of general knowledge even if it were only cursory-deep.

Going to south America... mmm... this is a very unlikely task... so it wouldn't be too late to learn manual "just" when you need it... There's no reason to consider this something worth preparing for..    -most americans won't be going there.. -most americans don't want to go there.. -if they do go there, most will be on vacation, and NOT driving around themselves.. in fact it's quite dangerous to do so... kidnappings, gang violence...

Many resort areas down there have armed guards at the gate and chk points to protect the american tourists.

-and to significantly raise the cost of illicit drugs sold at the resort...

Hmm good point on the manual though. However, have you ever meet some of the kids in high school now? I LOSE BRAIN CELLS TALKING TO THEM. They are incapable of having a conversation with out blanking out. They are pretty gullible too. Much fun. That thing on 4chan where you update your phone and it's instantly water proof, that is pretty fun to tell people. Lol.

I think ur experiencing the fact that Highschoolers are not yet adept at expressing themselves...

This would be true regardless of how much they know.. because communication skills can not be developed much quicker due to certain parts of the brain having not yet been myelinated.

The knowledge base that they've acquired shouldn't be significantly less than high-schoolers of earlier time periods, due to "internet"..

So your perception of their disorganization is the direct result of them actually KNOWING MORE, but still unable to effectively tell you about it...

I think you're off. I've spent time in both the US and obviously I live in the UK and typical commute and journey lengths were seemed similar. The difference is the way planning regulations and the respective age of both countries has resulted in sprawling, contiguous urban/suburban areas in the US, whilst in the UK/Europe things are more broken up where inner cities were designed and built before cars existed, suburb towns are separated from cities by greenbelt, rural roads twist all over the place due to being based on iron age tracks, etc. Traffic-wise, US roads are nothing like as crowded as in the UK/Europe and are designed simply, relying on traffic lights and flyovers rather than roundabouts and abrupt lane merges/splits. Basically you can coast around most of the USA in an automatic no problem, but if you try to use them in most other countries they become a liability and inconvenience.

With 27 our new (designated) Minister of Foreign Affairs is a few years younger than me, makes me feel old.
spindelegger? doesn't seem to be too young

That's our current one but he will switch to Finance Minister with the new government.

Sebastian Kurz will be our new one.

Just went into Costco this weekend and of course a look at all the TV's.

Am I old for wanting a CRT?  All the new models make everything look like a video game.  It's not BAD quality per say but just odd/weird looking.

Tube Tv's FTW!!!

with tubes.. You get the motion smoothness.. but....... there's also the issue is flicker

looking forward to lightboost in large tvs. This gets rid of 80% of the motion blur.. on par with crt,

Yeah I'm getting old... I'm 26 and still haven't finished uni but when I'm around 18y/o, most of them seem really childish to my eyes! The way they act, they speak...

Please don't take offense if you're 18, not all people are the same at a certain age. I just feel kind of old when I'm around them, funny thing is I'm just 8 years older than them!

Here is something to think about...When I was 18...
A good hambuger was 20 cents, a large one was 30 cents
gasoline was 33 cents a gallon
I drove a gold Plymouth Road Runner with a 383 V8 and a Hurst 4-speed gearbox - it cost $850 slightly used
No computers, No cellphones, only about 5 TV channels and NO cable
I made $1.50 an hour and had tons of money - my rent was $50 a month
I first started to game - Doom II, Quake II, Red Faction, Soldier Of Fortune...when I was 46 years old.
I feel quite young actually.  ;D
DECK Legend "Toxic" - SOLD
96 IBM Model M 82G2383- 95 IBM Model M 92G7453 - SOLD
