Corsair K60 LED MOD
« on: Thu, 16 January 2014, 17:56:21 »
SO i just bought a new Corsair K60 and want to do an LED mod on it
not every key on the keyboard but just around random places so i can see it at night
and i wanna know what resistor i need and is this keyboard PCB mounted or plate mounted.
i have no idea whats the power input of this thing since i accidentally throw the boxes and all that good stuff away  :(
if anyone could send me a link, tip or advice that would be great

Not that I can give much help on it but a multimeter maybe enough for starters to find out various voltage inputs and the the like for instance.

Just helping in trying to break the ice.

The work itself must be fun ...

1st time, it's aight..

2nd/3rd time.. when the novelty is gone.. it's just tedium.....

and what's at the end realistically... ANOTHER keyboard that did the same thing as your last keyboard, but looks different.... LOL...

Scroll down through this page: http://forum.baboo.com.br/index.php?/topic/757546-corsair-vengeance-k60-review/

You can see the PCB near the bottom of the page. It's a plate mounted board, but it doesn't matter since you feed the LED pins through the switch to the PCB with the switch in place. The PCB has pads for the LED's and individual resistors, so it's not too hard to mod. You need to be able to solder SMD, though.

You need the right type of LED, too. The easiest ones to find (which work) are 4x3x2 rectangular LED's, but if you can find 3mm flangeless round ones (normal round 3mm LED's have a flange at the base that prevents them from sitting in the space in the switch top) that's even better.

You can work out the resistor required from the LED specs. Assume 5v supply and use:

R = (5v  - LED voltage drop) / max LED current in amps

That will give you the lowest value resistor you can use. That'll probably give you VERY bright LED's, though, and most work fine on far lower currents than their max ratings, even down to a couple of mA sometimes, so you can go with up to 1500 ohm resistors in some cases.

If you don't need them to be massively bright, you can divide the max current by 5 or so when doing the calculation and simply use the nearest vallue resistor you can find.

Good luck with it and please keep us posted.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Not to push my own sales (I have a thread selling some LED color changers), but one way to go bout doing it is to use LED color changers first.

You can easily remove the changers if you don't like the color scheme. In contrast, soldering and desoldering is pretty dangerous. You could damage your pCB if you're a noob. (Since you have 1 post, I'm assuming you are not some hard core modder.)

Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

I certainly will try my best
thanks for your help
I'll post my new modded keyboard when done :)
