It is a German saying.
It means it is better to have something inferior close by than something better far away.

Did you know that? I certainly did not.
Forgot that my German friends vehemently deny the origin and veracity of this statement.
Knowledge is power and facts are over-rated.
Keep knowledge alive.

Don't worry too much about R.I.P.ster - he's only upset 'cause he got permabanned from GH.

And from DT.

Now he haunts Reddit.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I'm pretty stupid and abysmally deficient in the cultures, sciences and the arts.

Break your endeavor into manageable chunks.

To say "I want to learn about music" would be overwhelming.

Pick something like "cool jazz of the late 1950s" or "Mozart" or "new wave rock of the early 1980s" and spend a week or a month on that. Then move to something else.

What would you like to educate us about today?

r!pst3r has been spewing those same 10 tidbits of "science" for about 10 years now.  Here is the short version:  Filco's do ping, r!pst3r is just too old to hear it.  Topre's do not fart.  Things made in China are not made with very high quality control.  Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc is the name of a logical fallacy that many people, including scientists, fall prey to.  (There are approximately 78 other logical fallacies of which r!pst3r is ignorant, and of which he succumbs to diurnally.)  There you go.  I just saved you 12 months of reading his regurgitated pseudo-science on reddit.  I also saved you from his snark, sarcasm, and racism.

I don't think he was referring to your comment either, reddit just randomly grabbed your avatar as a thumbnail.

Regardless, I wouldn't listen to a word ripster says.

Man, you gotta give the man props for his rippling influence on GH even years later (but seriously, still mad after all this time?) His wiki's are defiantly missed around here, but he still puts out some decent material once in a while on his subreddit. Nothing groundbreaking like it used to be, but still informative and with nice pictures.

I suppose that nobody knows why he broke bad, but his excellent and well-constructed wikis here at geekhack jumpstarted my interest and knowledge of keyboards almost single-handedly. There was an amazing body of information there that has not been replaced, even remotely.

I never go to his new den at reddit, but for a certain period of time he really was "the man"

Ping or not to Ping? Someone actually bothered recording sound samples and comparing the waveform of a pinging to a non pinging switch?
Anyway, I think we should have a KeyboardScience subforum where we collect old and post new content of that kind...

u know ur calculus book?

Read it.......
Calculus is a waste of time.
If you really want to torture somebody go for ordinary differential equations.
If you want to murder somebody but make it look like suicide go for linear algebra.
If you’re in a multidisciplinary field, then combine the above with something like thermodynamics or biophysical chemistry and you’ll have a ritualistic suicide on hand.

Indeed. That is excellent advice. I’m curious about the Red jaguar mark 2. Tell me more about it.

On a more serious note, I've been reading a bit about topre every-night.

My second car was a Volvo 122s, the Swedish wannabe copycat of that Jag. It was a great little car, and had loads of Euro/Anglo idiosyncrasies.

Things made in China are not made with very high quality control.

i don't know about that.  people are pretty damn happy with their iphones.

but ya, i never realized it was a 'secret', but almost everything not made of wood/beef jerky/giant concrete and steel buildings that says 'made in USA' is from china (to get that label, you literally have to only put in two screws).  not sure about europe, never travelled there personally.

mainland chinese buy their goods from different factories that the ones used for export.  manufacturing companies specialize in either the western market or the asian goods markets.

If you really want to torture someone with math, have them take a mathematical methods in physics class.  All sorts of random stuff crammed into one semester, with as little theory as possible, and maximum extra-long equations that you don't even understand applications for--yet.  It's alright, you will learn the applications later, while wishing you had paid more attention in your math-physics class. Bessel functions? Etc.

Etc.

r!pst3r has been spewing those same 10 tidbits of "science" for about 10 years now.

One of the best posts I've read on this forum in quite some time. Bravo, sir. That sums it up quite nicely.

That sums it up quite nicely.

Are you kidding?

He did not even mention the guide for molding lead weight ballast inserts on the backyard grill.
