IT'S SUPER BOWL TIME
« on: Sat, 01 February 2014, 20:25:51 »
Oh yeah baby, it's that time again! It's time for the greatesh show on earth.

The Dever Broncos will plate the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 48, aka the Weed Bowl, aka Super Bowl 420, tomorrow at 1830 EST at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey, U S A. To find where you can watch it click here ------> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XLVIII#Broadcasting

If you have never watched American football, you totally should. I got into it about 6 years ago, and while I'm a Redksins fan, I'm supporting the Broncos, because I think #1 Offence > #1 Defence. I've only seen one other person on here with any football affiliation, but I hope we can have a discussion. Ish :)

Let's make this a trash talk/discussion/gloat thread. If the mods will allow it..? Shout out to the snack thread (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=53713.0) if you want to get some ideas from there!

I have a bet on already with some other guys, but by all means go ahead with others between you :)

Living in the UK I won't get any of these :( I wish I had enough money to buy NFL gamepass to watch the proper American version.

Huge Packers fan here.  I'll be rooting for them.  Or maybe the Broncos.  Or maybe the Seahawks.  Or maybe everyone!

I'm going for the Broncos by 7. Peyton throws 4 TDs, 1 INT with Sherman picking it off.

Russell wilson throws 1 TD, 2 INTs, two for Lynch, and one important member of Seattle's offence goes off injured before half time, not sure who though right now.

Super Bowl is a giant celebration of traumatic brain injury.  Yay.  Depression, cognitive deficits, and suicide await current players when they retire.  So worth it.

Broncos all the way. Seattle have been good this year but none of the squad have ever played in a Super Bowl before so I think the pressure is going to get to them.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Heh, I prefer the Sopranos stereotype :)

Defense wins championships.

It does. But QBs have been Superbowl MVP 6 of the last 10 times. Russell Wilson is not an MVP worthy QB. His first run vs the 49ers in the championship game he fumbled. I think SEA's defence will harass PM, but I don't think their offence has enough firepower to back up the Legion of Boom.

Having the better QB doesn't mean championship necessarily. Exhibit A: Eli Manning

I really don't understand the 'Super Bowl'. I remember watching it while I was at uni as it was the first time it had been aired live on the BBC or something, I managed to drink an entire crate of Kopparberg before even the half way point.

I assumed it was like rugby, but it's not. Well, it's like rugby, only turn based and spread over an entire day... like cricket.

You don't understand the Super Bowl or the game itself? It's an annual championship game to decide the best football team in the NFL. The game itself is confusing to understand without knowing the rules.

The game, the concept of the event isn't difficult to grasp. More the point and excitement of hand egg, though the realisation that it goes on for so long was also a shock.

It's a time to hang out with friends for an entire day, watch what should (ideally) be the most intense football game of the season, drink beer, eat snacks, and have a good time.  What's not to understand?

If you don't understand how the game's played, that's a different story.   :p

Edit: you clarified that you don't understand the sport, not the event.  Nevermind then.   :)

Yeah I think the best parallel in the UK (and perhaps most commonwealth countries) would be cricket. You can go to a cricket match in the summer and slowly get totally wasted with your mates while some people quietly throw a ball around in the distance... Or maybe just the pub...

It's very much a piece of "Americana" and I can certainly understand it being an oddity to foreigners. Just like cricket is to us. I'm not a huge sports fan, but it's nice to blow off a day and hang with friends and relax...even if I don't care about the game much. Half the people that watch football probably feel similarly about the whole thing.

Really can't start with "hand-egg" in mind, because then you've already dismissed something that's deeply rooted in American culture...

more than anything else,  it is an ad based industry.... and it is a pivotal excuse for celebration... which allows many to cast away typical reservations in "expenditure".. much like christmas as a shopping holiday..

There is very little game actually being played vs games watched...

Very few children play out side these days... Summers have become xbox time, dead silent..

There's very little jesus and christ left in Christmas as well...

But if this is what it takes to keep a consumer economy going... then it is the right thing to do...

sigh.. now that there's gonna be rain..  oxygen dissolving into the moisture...  lower air pressure...  less energy for offense..

defense has even great an advantage, because they don't have to be as explosive...
