haha, ok I am gonna chime in a little here because I felt much the same way until I won an iPad 2 at a business function. They do actually come in a lot more useful then you would think and I actually use it an amazing amount. I often just prefer browsing on the couch with it rather than on a laptop or PC. They not really great if you want to input anything but for consuming content they are perfect. Much of my GH time is from my tablet :)

Looks like you don't really need those Clacks now, do you? I mean, you can't put them on a iPad 2.. Send them to me bro!

I use my Nexus 7 almost every day for about 1h surfing the web and reading comics or magazines. It's great! Lay back on the couch, read in the bed, in the kitchen, no battery issues, long runtime, great display - so way better than reading on a laptop or PC/Mac.

Not quite there yet  :)) I still spend a good 8 - 9 hours a day on a real machine :) also when someone gets a bluetooth adapter going for the HHKB I will be able to use those clacks with my iPad  :thumb:

I've tried using the tablet for ALL of those things...

Light gaming (FTL)

Internet Browsing

Comics

Books

ALL amount to a considerably more physically taxing experience.

To use a tablet, You have to bend at the neck, OR raise it really high..  There's no real comfortable way to do this..

Bro.. I don't lift either...  So there's also the arms issue...

Tablets are incredibly slow compared to a laptop or PC...

You can't use Adblock on android effectively yet, and even having it turned on greatly slows down browsing..

Books and Comics...   I'd much rather read on my PC, much larger screen, and I don't gotta hold nothing...

If i'm on the couch..  it's better to just use the TV as a monitor....

AT no point has the tablet ever been the best solution..

I agree that if you're OUT in the middle of no where, Tablet may be the ONLY option...   but that would mean it's still your fault for not having brought a laptop..

Comics

Books

I find that I'd much rather read sitting on the couch or something, using the TV isn't really an option unless you're alone, although I don't think I'd want to read on the TV anyway.

Tablets definitely have their uses, I'd love to have one for reading, although tablets are a bit too expensive to be used as basically just a fancy e-reader, but e-readers are sorta lacking in features.

Having a kid I can honestly say when my wife took her in for surgery a while back letting her play on her Nexus 7 saved the day, it was the perfect distraction. So they certainly aren't a gimmick. :D

TP MASTAR TROLL. :D

I use my tablet everyday, 1st gen nexus 7. Sure you lose out on a few things such as performance and screen real estate vs a laptop but the difference is convenience which makes those trade off much less significant.

I thought it would be convenient.. but at what cost...

For the most part... tablet has made it such that it takes me forever to do something..

Even for example making this forum post...

I can turn on my PC and type this post out faster than I could on a tablet that's already on..

Oh, also my Onion Cat emoticons, Only available on PC

I have to agree with tp4. Tablets are not that great. Biggest downside is no keyboard. Also they are horrible if u have any amount of Carpal Tunnel syndrome or RSI.  Much painful.   I have latest ipad.  But now I'm looking at getting one of those windows 8 hybrids.  They are part netbook/ part tablet. I was hoping somebody here can recommend a good one with USB port for my HHKB.   Maybe i should just go full notebook?  I need light and portable. I don't need desktop replacement.

i have this bendy tablet arm hanging over the top of the head board

tablet arm

for ipad, it's a "bit" too heavy imo, it doesn't stay in the exact position i want.

however for lighter 8in tablets, it's perfect

Well...

I have a Galaxy Note 2 phablet... I use it mostly for tablet-type stuff. It's a great kindle reader, decent for browsing sites that don't require interaction and a lot of really quick tasks, like taking simple notes with the stylus or checking the weather, etc. Some games are really nice on it, too (Angry Birds, Bad Piggies, etc.)

I often use it for similar things you use books for (reading and taking notes). You have to hold a book up or angle your neck down just the same as with a tablet. I wouldn't want one bigger than 7" since it then becomes too unwieldy for the type of tasks I use it for.

I wouldn't use it or another tablet as my primary browsing device or for any long period task. Laptop or PC is much better for most of those.

I admit I have fallen asleep a number of times reading an e-book on my phone only to have it fall on me and wake me up  :)
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Even 7"...  too big too heavy for  Serious Internet Use...

doesn't matter how light it feels for the first 10 minutes....

my arms are to blame really.. they're too damn heavy on their own

I agree. Between my phone and computer, there is no need for another device. I think this will become a more popular opinion as 6"+ phones become more common.

I can not think of a situation I've ever been in where I've been away from home and could say "I wish I had some kind of device that I could go online with because I just can not wait till I get to a desktop computer."

it's hard though...  my triceps give out after about 20 minutes... holding the tablet upwards when I'm lying down

I usually lie on my side and prop up my phone or tablet against a pillow or other object. Comfy as all get out.

That's why you need to have your head a bit higher. Then you can support tablets weight with your chest. Or lie down on your side, this way tablet will stand on something.

But to be honest, you will get uncomfortable after a short time...

I am obvious troll when trolling and this sir is not trolling. My trolling would be silly like "I have zero devices that can go online." (catchy lame punchline)

You know what... I think this is where I've differed greatly from ya'll properly padded folks.. I don't have enough belly to sleep on my side..

i got 25" circumference waist, and 47" shoulder circumference.

So It's impossible to have my spine straight when I lie on my side.. I just can't do it...   it almost becomes L shaped..

i got 25" circumference waist, and 47" shoulder circumference.

So It's impossible to have my spine straight when I lie on my side.. I just can't do it...   it almost becomes L shaped..

pillow(s) under waist?

not a good fit..   i'd need a really precise triangle to make it work

I kid you not, I looked at the thread title in spy and even without looking at the OP said to myself "oh, look... it's a tp4 thread."

I have an iPad Mini, a very clean and easily portable device. I tried a first generation Kindle Fire, but that only worked best as an e-reader and some apps in my opinion, and I wanted better functionality. My iPad works well with those items and more. Plus, since I have iPhone, iMac, Macbook Pro…it fits into the Apple universe and I must benefit somehow because they tell me I do.

I'm looking for an iPad Mini case, probably with a built in keyboard. Any feedback on folio-style cases with keyboards? Even if for other devices? Not sure I need it, but I had to make a spreadsheet one night in a hotel and didn't have my laptop…a mini keyboard would have been sweet!

If you KNOW you're gonna need spreadsheets...  You gotta have something with an i7 with at least 2.5ghz...  you just gotta....

Nothing else will do the job without frustrating you.

IPad Mini using Numbers. It just worked.
Not major number crunching workbooks with complicated algorithms and carry overs.

Ok, I see the tablet limitation first hand.

I had to create a long, highly detailed email with photographs. I spent 5 hours in the hotel until 1AM composing, typing, inserting, editing, wishing I had my laptop the whole time. The tablet limitation was mostly with the viewing and editing…MUCH slower/laborious. I was hating life. The spreadsheet I worked on previously, had it been more constructed/evolved, would have been a similar nightmare as well.

Maybe a bit more detail is needed for some….

Cut/paste, moving around the screen, reviewing anything that's not visible at the same time, scrolling, massive editing, combined with the normal composing and misc…it was a chore. But this was also a difficult/political task designed to sink a contractors excuses/lack of performance, so there was a negative aspect to the tack to begin with. Plus, I'm not used to doing this on a tablet, maybe it gets easier, but I don't want to try it anymore. Obviously this is not a tablets main function/strong point. If I had an iPad mini case with bluetooth keyboard that might have helped. I'll look for one today.
