Tp4 and the Outdoors
« on: Sun, 27 July 2014, 15:06:36 »
So... today when I went outside...  I've come to realize how inadequate I am with outdoors knowledge..

It was really sunny... and I was hot... just sat there, didn't know what to do.. being miserable.  Then this lady hands me a bottle of ice water..  And I'm drink it, and think... Genius!!!  Why didn't I think of that..

I knew to drink when thirsty, but it never occured to me to drink when it's hot...

So.. lesson one for me,  Ice water when Hot...

any other key outdoor tips?

I found that when a bug lands on you, the accepted social response is murder. I don't much think I'm ready for outside.

If you're really hot and want to cool down quickly, put a bottle or can of cold drink in your elbow.

Wear a hat with a brim to stop your nose and ears getting sunburnt.

Long sleeves (white cotton is good) if you don't want burnt arms.

Hydrate (as you have already learned).

One web site says Florida has 29 degrees C today (85F).

You call that hot?

That is just starting to warm up.

Just wait until it hits 40 degrees C and then start complaining :p

I do not live in FL, so I don't know their daily weather, rowdy!  :P

I'm just saying that in general, FL is really hot.  Or at least it was when I was there a few years ago.  Plus, humidity, etc.

Also, 85F is above my desired range of temperatures.  40C???  I would die.  Why have you not moved???      Crazy Australians...

Just after midday, the car exterior temp was reading 91 degrees today. I was shocked to see it so low.

The kind of heat where simply sitting in a chair outside will beckon the sweat from your pores. It's not 'stralia heat but damnit it's hot enough for me!! :D :D

The hudmidity + the sun is just plain brutal. Look at that uv index!!

I grew up in Adelaide, which always used to be hot and dry.  Back then we all knew Melbourne to be cold and wet.

So what happened when I moved to Melbourne (for work)?  Melbourne had a 10 year drought!

Now it gets just as hot here as id did in Adelaide, only Adelaide seems to have more rain sometimes.

The hottest we had here in Melbourne was 46 degrees.  One day about 3 or 4 years ago.  That was hot.

There was this week in Adelaide a couple of decades back where the temperature did not drop below 30 degrees C day or night.

Today is 17C and sunny in Melbourne.  Friday is supposed to be 10C and raining.

29C is comfortable.

You can complain!  I just am not a fan of the heat, so I wouldn't want to live down there, except during winter possibly.  Only request would be some snow.  Not too much, just a healthy amount.  ;)

Did not mean to attack FL, sorry about that.  :|

never go outside
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Sometimes I go outside. It's nasty.

If you think about it, humans are such particular creatures. We're so picky about temperature, humidity, diet, etc. Almost seems like we don't even belong here sometimes. Why live on Earth if we just try to change everything constantly?

Don't get me wrong I like it here, its just that strange thoughts like this sometimes make me ponder.

I found that when a bug lands on you, the accepted social response is murder. I don't much think I'm ready for outside.

It was in uncanny. I lived in central British Columbia all of my life, until the last 4 years up here. The mosquitoes are both twice as large, and about 10x as plentiful. Then there are the sandflies...

Yeah I have flipped **** many times. Thats when you whip out the big ass can of bug spray and then you have to make that crucial decision. Deal with the mosquitos or live in a room that smells like poison and is probably killing you

If you're talking about the male mosquitoes, they don't bite.

I'm aware of that! They are not much bigger than their southern brethren, but the females definitely are.

Show Image

why do you think that this is a male mosquito?

It's common conception! But I'm more than willing to learn more about why that is or is not correct.
