Need recommend for a Laptop
« on: Sun, 23 November 2014, 14:12:29 »
Well, after afew weeks of roaming around and finding a new lappy, need alittle help from a great community :D
Budget: About $1300
And I'm looking for a nice gaming one, used/ ref is ok if price is reasonable within the budget
Target: lap with i7 gen 4, GTX 880M or M290x

I did find some Alienware but to far from budget
Have no love with Asus ROG, and MSI GT series :\

Or should I stick with some cheaper graphic card opt like GTX 870m?
any recommend

Make sure you really NEEED a gaming laptop..

Because if your budget is $1300..

Essentially.. the difference between a $1300 Desktop and Laptop is double the CPU power, Triple the GPU power..

Honestly; you don't need an i7 unless you are doing video editing. Go with the Lenovo.

Exactly this. Also, in your price range, you won't find an 880...need to bump 300-500 at least.

I assume you run Windows since you mentioned gaming.

Have you considered the Samsung Series 9? Very nice body.

I second the Lenovo Y50, I know someone who has one and loves it, plus I have always thought Lenovo (especially back when they were IBM) made quality stuff.

Lenovo was never IBM. You are probably thinking of the Thinkpad brand.

Lenovo bought the ThinkPad brand. Including the manufacturing technology, the global sales channels and operation teams. So in 2005 Thinkpads stopped being made by IBM and switched to being made by Lenovo. Most people think the quality of Thinkpads has slowly gone down since.

The issue with the series 9 is there is no discrete gpu. Integrated won't get you far if you're planning on gaming (unless it's an iris pro)

That's true. They have integrated GPUs.

I didn't know they bought the thinkpad line, I always figured they were just a spinoff of IBM, still I liked the Thinkpads, had several of them. Its too bad about the quality going down. I have not owned a lenovo since my last thinkpad (about 2005 or 2006)

Lenovo is a Chinese company that has been around since the mid 80's.

The previous company I worked for used to be a big Thinkpad shop. All software engineers/management had Thinkpads without hesitation. Since 2012 they've slowly grown tired and most have switched to some other vendor.

I agree with you. Thinkpads used to be the best made laptops (and best keyboard/trackpoint interface), sad they haven't kept it up.

What is the resolution of the screen? Can't find that information online.

Look into getting a 970m should perform better than an 880m i think they are still round the same price. You could look into a clevo or sager rebrand though people consider them ugly. I do not recommend laptop gaming due to laptops do not have proper heat dispersion and shorten the part lifespan(mostly the battery due to exposing the lipo to high heat ranges) but an clevo, asus rog, msi, alienware usually are better at heat dispersion. Remember the thinner the laptop is the more it is unsuited for gaming.
