Writing Better, sans the Shopping Bull****
« on: Thu, 04 December 2014, 18:31:37 »
Don't Buy a Fountain-Pen,  Just-because !!!

If you practice with ANY pen under the premise -to improve your Penmanship-,  it WILL happen, given at least 100 hours..

However....  for Novice penman or anyone who missed the boat at a young age, fountain pens tend to cause RUSH-ing.. The ink flows very fast with only light pressure, and it's very slippery..

For practicing letter rhythm and shape..  this is best done on Pencil, or Ball point..( you already own a billion of these)

Take your time, USE the grittiness to CONTROL your shapes,  until you achieve a good visual balance..

Telling someone to buy a fountain pen is like telling them to buy a mechanical keyboard..

The tool  AT BEST  may push them to use it, to write more, to type more.

HOWEVER, that novelty feeling is short lived...  and it will NOT carry you very far into penmanship or 100+ wpm typing speed..

Better writing and faster typing must COME from Deeper.. you have to have a pure desire for it..

Most people here I find are just shopaholics who like hitting-drugs, tend to buy things and then stash them on a shelf..

< this is the greatest waste of ones time >

- I confess.. I've done this in the past.. But I've since recognized the pattern, and kept myself in check.

I've created this thread, because it has become apparent that despite perhaps good intentions.. All other fountain pen threads on this forum has been about SHOPPING..

I'm not against shopping.. I just want to get a message out, that if anyone's looking to Truly improve their penmanship..

You already Have the tools...

The only thing you need is to put in the TIME...

Honestly.. I get it.. but.. you know what.. If you can't get past the initial hurdle of reading.. writing may indeed be a secondary pursuit..

yeah I use my FP as an excuse to write better.

If I'm just writing a note to myself there's a good chance it'll be illegible to other people. But forget them they don't need to read it :p

Otherwise makes a lot of sense though.

I thought the nicer paper for fountain pens was expensive.

Maybe when it's in a notebook with leather covers..

But the paper itself isn't really that special..

They sell paper in printer stacks comparable to any claire fontaine Sn00ty notebook Bull****.

Also Guys.. There is a huge difference between  writing... and drawing..   You can not write with nearly as much uniformity as drawing..

The first picture I posted is Written..    This picture below is drawn..   the written first picture took 30sec for the whole thing,  the drawn one below took 20-25sec for just those 3 lines..  NOTE that it's NOT time efficient to have higher uniformity..

The following post is 45-60 seconds, notice even greater uniformity.

This is especially time consuming on small letters..  Large is slightly faster, but not by much.

I got a fountain pen cause I thought it was pretty. my writing will forever remain that of a 5-year old with parkinsons though.
I don't disagree with what you are saying, but I think people don't expect to write better just cause they have a fancy pen. they just enjoy using them regardless.

Coming from your previous thread I thought this was going to be about becoming better writers without buying more keyboards  :p

The first picture I posted is Written..    This picture below is drawn..

(Attachment Link)

They're both writing, one is just slower and more careful. Writing is as many strokes as parts, drawing is more strokes than parts (aka lettering).

I don't want to turn it into a semantics-battle..

I recognize writing/drawing more traditionally coming from an Asian-Calligraphy background.

The distinction between writing and drawing in Chinese characters is tremendous.

Due to the complexity and density of the characters, perfect uniformity requires very close scrutiny and the difference between grass/cursive-like style writing and li-shu (print-style) is 4x to 5x the time requirement increase.

The reason for this difference is the same in western-calligraphy, but it is less pronounced because the western calligraphy we're usually talking about has an alphabet and is very spacious.

So.. I guess. what i'm trying to say is..

Writing is like having thoughts flow onto the page.. (Efficiency)

whereas

Drawing is pre-assembling the thoughts to put down, and then FOCUSING on making the letters uniform and subjectively prettier..   (Vanity)

Go on youtube... notice there is no such thing as FAST calligraphy.. because it simply can not be done..

the Uniformity that is required to produce the iconic Calligraphy feel, can't be done at the rate of your ideas..

Wearing down your pens.. breaking them.. running out of ink, running out of paper..

Those are badges of improvement.. wear them with pride..

From the beginning of your writing career until you actually break a pen from wear,  the difference in your skill level is phenomenal..

More
Dear TP4tissue
I have worn through an entire ballpoint pen at least twice in my life without losing or breaking it. It hasn't done anything for my handwriting though.

This V is quite pretty.. Took a long time for me to understand V-s..  basically visualize them as curves, instead of lines..   they'll arrive much more naturally when you do..
