Gaming things looks like it's for 14 year olds...
« on: Sun, 14 December 2014, 17:31:45 »
Why do all gaming products look like they were designed for 14 year old?

It's like they were in a board meeting and then were like "we need tons of straight edges and bright lights"

Never buy anything  that says "gamer" ever, no matter what context. . . that's life advice.

Because they were designed for 14 year olds to spend their parents' money on?

If you guys "feel" that these things are designed for someone younger than yourself..

AND

you also "feel" the need to criticize that very fact despite the lack of personal consequence..

THEN

you are getting-OLD..

TP4 is so incredibly epic old as crap, that he doesn't care about what anything looks like, as long as it does what needs to be done @ the highest performance to cost ratio..

Because they were designed for 14 year olds

As the father of a 14-year-old (actually he turned 15 a couple of days ago) I can tell you for a fact that he goes ape**** for stuff like that.

It really isn't so far, conceptually, from the steampunk aesthetic, except that this is harsh and rude rather than whimsical and rococo.
From the US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8 :

The Congress shall have Power

To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

Just don't buy dumb looking gear? There's plenty of great gear with acceptable asthetics, and they are often of a much higher quality then those flashy poops.

Yeah like... if you're not gonna buy it why complain? Some people like the look of it. Why do you think companies keep making stuff like this?

If you eve get to see a full-scale LAN, stuff like this gets given away as well, since it's recognizable and you can tell your friends EXACTLY what it is, and they can look it up easily. Smart marketing, really.

Was looking around for a mouse. And happened to stumble on this lol

It is great marketing. But I've always thought it was kind if tacky lol. To each their own.

I've always felt steam punk was harsh and rude..

Whimsical and rococo ?

rococo i get (though it's not always present in steampunk), but whimsical, it's not whimsy, it's unnecessarily unclean.. dystopian

Its preference and perspective, some might think LEDs and artisan keycaps are tacky while some think they are worth every penny. Personally a fan of LEDs and keycaps.

Is it really surprising that businesses design their expensive products to appeal to their target market? In the 1980s IBM designed their computers and keyboards specifically to appeal to businesses as well as to try to prove that they were "real" computers and not glorified microwave ovens. Nowadays computers are different, and gaming is very mainstream. There's a large market for "gaming" apparel and many people who will buy something just because they're told it will somehow improve their gaming ability. There is also a large market of young people who play games and as such companies design their products to look 1337 |-|4x0|2!!!!

No reason to feel offended because these things look like they were designed for children; they actually were.

I've long wished that gaming companies would design things like that for adults.
I like a lot of Razers products, but I hate the branding and the fact everything has to be glowing green and look like a spaceship from a Micheal Bay movie.

I think the problem comes down to cost, rather than markets or the audience.
To have a good design team that can design good products takes time to build and costs a lot of money. Not every designer is a good designer. And Razer for example, make cheap products and when you look at the market for more expensive keyboards, mice you get more and more specialised, and then you start to compete with the likes of people on here.
Peripherals are not considered (I would say) important as a gfx card or motherboard to most people who game on PC, you can tell this by looking at most gaming forums and seeing people's 'PC' setups, they will have insane machines with 12 monitors, and then a cheap Razer keyboard, they can afford better, but don't see the benefit. I think the same is true of gaming peripheral companies.

I expect some of it is probably related to fear...

If the product looks like something that someone would use in an office, the kids will worry that it's not really designed for gaming and therefore might be a liability in that context.

It is intuitive to think that something that has been designed for a particular purpose will be more suited to that purpose than something that is not. Even though this is, in many ways, not the case for keyboards, it is a natural thought, and thus likely to be far more widespread than anything that requires actual information. Next, if something looks like it's designed for use in an office, then the kids will worry that, regardless of what the marketing says, the product has been designed for use in an office and not for gaming. Once again, it's a natural thought that can easily occur when information is absent: if you have one product that, judging only by looks, could only be for gaming, and another one that could be for gaming or office, the first will seem like less of a risk.

Sure it has been like this for a long time... with crazy shapes and garish lights is for sure geared towards younger people. Then you have some companies like nzxt and Corsair that seem to be turning more towards things that look very clean, understated with huge attention to function... trying to grab the adult market that have outgrown the carnival stuff I suppose. I've been really impressed especially with the huge u turn NZXT has made this year. The 340 case especially... to me that should be the epitome of a gamer case. Nothing you don't need! Their partnership with Ducky with keyboard models that really matched up with the other gear was also a good though perhaps overly safe move since they only did full sizes.

Young people like Tacky because it's new to them.. and refreshing relative to their easy lifestyle..

But once your world is full of distractions, serious-academics, work, girls, sex, kinky-sex...

Your perspective on aesthetics will change and simplify to ameliorate the onslaught of neo-complexities and stimulus in adolescent life.
