Moot's retirement from 4Chan
« on: Wed, 21 January 2015, 14:41:47 »
I don't know if there are here some people from 4Chan or people who where there, maybe many of you also hate the place (hello Reddit), but i read right now that Moot, the founder and main administrator and public face, retired today. I thought it is worth to mention here, and maybe someone wants to share his or her experience with this - as i find - sometimes very interesting and inspiring place.

I was not very often at 4Chan in the last 2-3 years, but before my girlfriend and now wife always asked me if i am married with this website. Sometimes i showed weird and funny threads other people i know, but from all i know in RL only one or two frequently visited 4Chan then too. Today i am sometimes reading (and little bit posting) on /p/, /g/ sometimes /v/.

I stopped going there about 5 or 6 years ago when the summer***s started staying year round and anon became mostly whiny 14 year olds. I hear recently the mods have been nazi's too. It's like, why does 4chan even exist anymore? Maybe I'm just too old to understand how dank memes and ponies help fight the mainstream, but **** that place.

As someone who never had anything to do with 4chan becasue I don't see much point in becoming invested in an anon community (or one that tries to be), 4chan for better or worse never really changed. The dank memes and dumb **** still make me giggle but threads are still as ****ty as they always where etc etc

I've no idea what effect this guy leaving with have on 4chan but I'm curious to watch from a distance

x-post from DT

Wow, I'm in disbelief..

I've browsed that site regularly since I was 11 or 12 years old. I'm sure I wouldn't be the person I am today if it weren't for 4chan (I would probably be much better off  :))). I hope this doesn't spell the end for the site. It holds many fond memories for me.

I was really surprised to hear that. I doubt it'll change a whole lot, though.

true.

I always explain 4chan as "smart people pretending to be stupid"

sort of like the opposite of reddit, but with less realtime news (the only reason i still use reddit, that and r/eve or r/dota2)

it'll probably be crap for a week or 2 then everyone will move to 8chan or just keep using it as normal.

i'm gonna miss moot though, RIP moot ID trolling.

On some boards nothing really ever changed in the last years, even the same people are there. At least i find every time some interesting things i would not have known. Even my keyboard obsession started there!

But somehow i do hope that this was not a big sell-out and one will try to make a new cool place out of it.

i'm gonna miss moot though, RIP moot ID trolling.

Yep!

I couldn't get into 4ch.. I was too late in the cycle. And then there were so many kids, the entire site just generated noise.

looking at your avatar, i'm not sure.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.
