What are your five year plans?
« on: Thu, 05 February 2015, 08:33:13 »
Real talk!

Thought it'd be interesting to see what motivates people around here. Whether it's study, work, travel - what are you hoping to accomplish in the next five years?

I'm hoping to travel to the US this year or next depending on funds and apart from that I'd like to be living on my own within the next couple of years. Apart from that I'm pretty happy to just go with the flow, busted my arse last year getting myself a job doing Android development and I'm very satisfied doing that so far so I'll just see where that takes me.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I plan on finishing school but that will take some time as I am only going to school part time. I plan on having my child grow well and healthy as well as to be employed at our local programming facilities in my area.  :thumb:

My last year was a big one (graduated college, new job/securing my own place), so the next few years will be modest in comparison, but:

  • More writing on the job (I write for a living, but right now also do IT support)
  • Get a Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2  :D
  • Get my weight down to ~200lbs or so with low body fat% (started at almost 260 lost 22lbs so far and starting to get muscle, probably at 22-25% BF)
  • Move rooms in my condo (upstairs is more private but is in use by another tenant)
  • Pay down my loans as much as possible!

This is a cool thread.
I’m 35, I got married last year.
My five year plan is..

-Become more proficient as a network admin (I’m new, came from aircraft maintenance, then went into infrastructure/client systems, then to network admin last year)
-Finish my BS in Information Security (three classes remain, yay)
-I’m slotted for a CEH bootcamp through work in October,  once classes are done, prep for that.
-Sign up for a CISSP bootcamp after CEH, prep, and pass.
-Teach myself how to program and continue to practice and learn security concepts
-Find a job in Minnesota
-Sell my house in MD, move to MN, rent a house for a year, maybe two.
-Find some land, build a “Barndominum” (google it)
-Profit?
-oh and keep lifting weights injury free like a beast

In 5 years I'll hopefully be married to my current girlfriend of 4 years,

I'll hopefully be settled down in a new career as a software developer (currently back in school although I am coming from being a slave to the state prosecutor's office - kind of a big change going from law to CS).

I'll be living in a new city (having lived in Chicago for most of my life, with short stays in Taipei, Hong Kong, and for the first 3 years of my life in Louisiana). Maybe somewhere like Tokyo, Paris, or the Bay Area.

I'll hopefully be back in prime shape. A few years ago I was  gymnast benching 280 and running a 5:00 mile... now I'm up a few waist sizes, down to benching 180 and walking a 10:00 mile now due to laziness and a terrible smoking habit that I developed in law school.

Ill hopefully be done paying off student loans (will be up to 60k between the loans incurred during my JD and the BS I'm currently working towards - at least I'll have finishef the BS by this time next year)

Oh... and ill hopefully have quit smoking by then.

Don't have much else in terms of goals. I really want to have achieved stability and happiness in my life, which is something that kind of went out the window in college

I can't even plan the next day, never mind the next 5 years...

Although if I can still be in the job I'm at now in 5 years (with yearly raises) I'd be perfectly happy with that.

So this is what's like to set goals.  Interesting, I don't do much of this activity.  I mostly live keyboard to keyboard.  Here is my five-year plan:

1.  Triple industrial production to meet all domestic needs and begin path of becoming a leading exporter of manufactured goods.
2.  Continue military strengthening to move beyond a regional influence and start projecting power outside the continent.
3.  Bread and meat on every table, liquor in every cabinet.
4.  Establish a program for educating the youth about the past, present, and future glory of the state, and the value of a life dedicated to the state rather than individual needs.
5.  Expand cultural unity to reach even the most remote corners of the nation, in order to unite a proud and prestigious nation.
7.  Get laid more.   Encourage a culture of openness and love.

My goals are not really set in stone

* get down to about 200lbs, currently 236ish (down from 319 .. ).
* stay on top of my health (I have NF2, so there's not much I can do for that).
* I would love to find a good job but being deaf, partially blind and partially mute is rather difficult

* stay alive ... lol

1. Graduate College/ figure out how to pay for it
2. Study in Australia again
3. Boulder a V8-V9
4. Figure out the 5 years after these

thank heaven you live in 'MURICA #1 and your life doesn't include legal alcohol.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Hopefully I'll have my PhD by then.

From what I hear about PhD programs, probably not.

1. Graduate College/ figure out how to pay for it
2. Study in Australia again
3. Boulder a V8-V9
4. Figure out the 5 years after these

I'm 18 btw so my life right now is school, women, parties, and keyboards. I've officially hit the point where money just disappears and I have no clue where it went or how I've gotten myself into this situation. Damn this life **** is confusing.

That five-year plan sounds awesome.  Just focus on the important things, mainly keyboards and parties.  Everything else just naturally follows when you focus on those things, like good grades, internships, full-time jobs, women, high-performing investments, and various other accolades.

I got CISSP certified after attending a boot camp. I tell you what, I was dreaming about security practices for weeks. That was a lot of information to absorb at once! The concepts I knew of course, but trying to learn specifically for the test was no joke. I did end up passing though. Best advice I could give is make sure you schedule the test to be close after the boot camp ends. Don't wait hoping to study more. It is all in your head - use it while you can get the most out of it. Also, you will find that those classes for the BS in Info Security will do wonders to keep up your yearly CISSP requirements. After the classes are done you have to get creative and pay attention to your credits!
Some hearts are gallows, I'm not here for hangin' around

Sounds like good advice, I'll take my test on monday hungover and report back with the results.  :thumb:

You'll have an A and at least one of the girls you've been eyeing in that class on your arm.  Probably a summer internship offer by the end of the week.

Sir, I believe you are only 18. Drinking alcohol at your age is illegal, I'm afraid.

I'll be hungover from all the Capri Sun I'm gonna drink on Sunday night.  ^-^

In all seriousness I don't really drink that often, I'm not a huge fan.

Drinking in moderation is okay. Even at 18. :P

Getting drunk is not fun, at least no to me.

I like a happy middle ground, but I really prefer to remember the night. I'm quite content being buzzed and watching the dumb **** some of my friends do.  :))

All joking aside, moderation is wise, especially in the realm of substance abuse.
