What would you do with $100 on Amazon?
« on: Sat, 14 February 2015, 22:52:55 »
So I've got some Amazon.com gift cards sitting around ($100 worth). I'm looking for ideas on what I should spend it on, and I thought to myself, who better to ask than the clearly-not-prone-to-unwise-spending folks on GH?

FWIW, I would really love to get my hands on a Model M, but you just can't find those on Amazon.

Have you ever done a search for an IBM or Lexmark Model M keyboard on Amazon?  There might be a vendor or two that has them there.

OK so I'm new here and trying to learn the rules...I thought the TOS said to keep things family-friendly? Is that not really a thing or maybe just not in the off-topic forum?

I'm not offended or anything, just trying to learn the rules.

There's one listed as mint condition for $145. Another one has missing/sticky keys for $135. So hardly a bargain for either.

I'd buy a floor fan, cat food, and a few video games. Maybe some new underwear and socks.

Dude if you need a floor fan I've got one you can have. It's one of those tower kinds. It used to have a remote control but I lost that. Still, it oscillates and it has different speeds and a timer.

I've got no use for it since we installed central air and insulated the walls. Let me know if you're interested.

Sure I would be interested, but it might cost more to ship then would be worth it.

Crate of Nong Shim Onion Flavor Rings is about $32; it's 20 bags and makes quite a scene when it shows up at the office and you rip it open and hand them out like third-world food aid.

I would buy a pressure washer. Or half a set of decent headphones.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

This is not a bad idea. I am stuck with a big & tall chair at work right now (I'm neither) and it's not very comfortable. The only other chair we have sitting around is all kinds of messed up. I suspect it was abused by someone who should have been using a big & tall chair.

I wonder what I could get for a hundred bucks....

Or if that's still too HD for you there's always VLC with the libcaca module.

Are they actual gift cards, or credit in your account? Because if they are gift cards, you could always try and trade them to someone for a Model M.

They are actual gift cards. I thought about proposing a trade or even just selling the cards for cash to buy one on Ebay. But a part of me still hopes to find one in a dumpster and fix it up into good working order. Of course, for that to happen I'd need to start looking in dumpsters.

I would drop a $100 bid on an SSK inside the first hour of being posted to ebay just to piss off half of GH.

People do that in every auction. Doesn't piss me off, just makes me sad. You really want to be provocative, buy a $2000 keyboard. ;)

If I would have won that lottery, I would have bought it in a heart beat.

I do a lot of buying at live auctions,  the VERY large bump in bid right off the bat is a sure fire way to get items cheaper than getting into a bidding war.

I sometimes mistake dildo for SSK, too.

The Metro DataVac a couple other people have linked IS awesome..  I use it to 'sweep' under/around my desk area even, lol

I would probably get either of these precision screwdriver sets, and a new skillet.

That skillet is nice. I bought my wife a lodge enameled dutch oven for Christmas last year. It's now basically the only pot we use.

I really want a dual monitor stand. They are some decent looking ones for around $60-80 on amazon.

We picked up the dutch oven in the blue color a few months ago.. It was an Amazon Warehouse deal for only $55.  Might as well get the matching skillet!

the Warehouse deal was discounted because the box got scraped.. wasn't banged up or anything.

I have had this one for a couple years and it still feels really sturdy. Decent cable management. If your desk is too thick you can open up the bracket and bolt it on directly.

I make chilli in a smaller 5 qt version of this, the cast iron makes a huge difference in taste.

Non-enameled cast iron doesn't play nicely with acidic stuff if it isn't well 'seasoned' so be careful there :o

The straight up cast iron ones are sweet for cooking in a campfire too, tho!

That looks pretty good. I have been eyeing this one, just because it is cheaper and has good reviews! http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0052AWGLE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1K8VWGYX7EP41&coliid=IJ9P32M7P0X3C

Haha, yeah we seasoned it well before we cooked with it. Once all this snow recedes some I'm going to try it out in my firepit out back. That probably won't be until July at the rate we're getting snow up here.

And once it all melts the resulting flash flood will wash away your fire pit with it.
