i don't wear shoes in the house. i'm european though.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Born and raised in singapore. Am singaporean by nationality, but chinese by race.
chinese are the separate race now?

It's a reasonable distinction, given that there is not ethnic group known as "Singaporean".

In Singapore this is very sensitive. The government wants to define 'Singaporean' as anybody who flies in as a tourist, and hand out citizenships to anyone who wants it (just apply, claim you have a high school education, and they'll probably approve on the spot), but some xenophobic people disagree...  :p

I need to eat rice every once a week, and I would prefer to use fork and spoon over chopsticks (I could use chopsticks, just prefer fork and spoon). And I watch a lot of anime.. so am I a max level Asian?

Not quite..

Max lvl Azn:

-maximum score on college entrance exam..

-Places state in a sport..(tennis/swimming)

-Plays multiple instruments at concert lvl

-Eats rice everyday, 3 meals a day..

-Has 0 unbecoming habits such as anime/vidya

In the 9 years that I swam/ran/wrestled/played soccer competitively, I came across at least three asians that were decent at a sport. So I can confirm that = true

Never seen one play an instrument well, though, so I'm starting to think your post might be a ruse..

then you haven't met any max lvl asians.

they're probably mid 70s to 80s..

My explanation was for Max lvl which means 99..   obviously there arn't going to be as many of these.

Ex-State-level gymnast, 4.0 rated tennis player, pianist of 20+years (guitarist for 15?), and (near) max college entrance exam scorer here.

According to the TP scale:
I'd say I'm a level 88 Asian. Not quite max because I never could get that perfect SAT/ACT score... so so close but my Engrish no good enough.

Also had to dock a few levels because I have an addictive personality when it comes to video games and manga and stuff. That and I pretty much had no ambitions in high school + college.

All this probably knocks me down to 80 but I'm arbitrarily adding 8 points to put me at level 88 because Asians love the number 8.

's ok sygaldry..   You're still a way better azn than Tp4

Tp4 is almost negative azn lvl..

Got all the bad habits..  alcohol/vidya/girls/general-laziness

Didn't get anywhere near perfect score on Entrance, 1480/1600, <this is bad for asians, because the top schools have an asian quota that are filled by 1550-1600s>

Then I got through lvl 8 piano and stopped.. <not supposed to do that>

Ah.. no, thankfully I was introduced to Odds very early on, because I played alot of mahjong and asian-poker as a kid..

My parents were in the US, with no oversight, instead of going to school I roamed the streets with the local kids gang..

Probably deduct Asian points for being soy-less though :(

Raw eggs in the US are safe enough!

I've probably eaten 500 raw eggs during my time here (in between cookie dough, hot pot, and tamagokakegohan) and I haven't had any issues whatsoever... yet!

Salmonella is pretty damn rare last time I heard. So I doubt even if you eat 1000 raw eggs you'll get salmonella poisoning.

I'd still wish I lived in japan, I heard their eggs are great.
Oh yeah. Here is a article I just found by doing a quick Google search:

apparently bad flour was the cause.

Oh yea.. I eat many cans of this stuff every year , you can add it to anything,  spaghetti, steak, fried chicken.. anything..

AKA,   "Instant-Asian-Sauce"

it makes everything taste azn..

If ya'll go acquire this, you HAVE TO get this exact brand [牛頭牌沙茶醬]... the off brand tastes different. <in Chn, everything different = BAD >

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shacha_sauce

The Oil separates from the particulates naturally,  You have spoon the oil and particulates evenly, OR you can stir up the can until it's mixed evenly each time..

I'm starting to lose patience with US citizens' definition of Asian. It's very much a product of that noxious consumer society.

For me Asian has something to do with perspectives and values and beliefs. In that sense Muslim is VERY Asian even if it is definitely not me.

What's that garbage that TP4 eats? I have never seen a can like that in my life. Most amusingly the name translated as Bullheaded Brand of Sandy Tea Sauce- even in Chinese the name sounds stupid. The wikipedia has puzzled me too, since it's not satay sauce at all. It's a very American thing I'd bet, because anything I wanna eat I'll eat it fresh or make it myself. And THAT is very Chinese (wanting to eat things fresh or make it yourself.)

Lol berserk... that's the sauce they serve at hot pot restaurants in Taiwan. It is absolutely delicious. Just because its not sold in SG doesn't mean its not authentic :p

Edit:
Also what you call "sandy tea" (沙茶) is an important staple in traditional Taiwanese cuisine - used as dipping sauce, marinade, or for stir fry all over the country. Hell, it's common even on the mainland (at least in the southern, coastal provinces) and in Hong Kong.

The Pan-Chinese cuisine consists of hundreds of sub-cuisines, many of which share very little commonalities. Perhaps "sandy tea" just isn't a part of the cuisine in SG? I'll just say this - it's definitely not a East-meets-West creation (unlike the monstrosity that is Sriracha sauce).

Ha, Sygaldry, I must have seen it before then in some Chinese restaurant, except never tried to eat it (And never seen the can before). Must have mistaken it for black sauce, black bean sauce or soy sauce, none of which I consume. Yes, laugh, but my family hasn’t eaten any of these things for a long time by now ever since my parents got the notion that they were carcinogenic. (The production methods are stomach churning so all these substances were banned.)

I am so turned off by anything I can’t recognize or understand in a Chinese/ Taiwanese restaurant. Especially after 1) consuming months of melamine milk some years ago; 2) the gutter oil scandal.

In recent years in Singapore hot pot has gained notoriety. Basically some construction workers or peasants from Sichuan will come, set up hot pot restaurant, provide expired, substandard trash that sometimes they recycle from previous restaurant patrons (so sometimes the soup has used tissue papers and other refuse inside)… so I never consume any hot pot anymore. If I want it, I make it myself or go to a non-Chinese restaurant eg Korean.

Another trend in Singapore is for local Chinese to consume… Malay food for our daily eats. The queues at Malay Nasi Padang stalls tend to be the longest because it’s a public perception that Malays are less profit oriented and cut fewer corners than Chinese. It’s really a reaction against excessively bad Chinese food. Low end restaurants and food stalls here keep employing peasants from China who can’t cook and it’s so disgusting because they use all kinds of sauces (presumably including the sand in tea stuff) to disguise what’s obviously expired food such as bad tofu.

If you were to look at my spice cabinets, the only traditional Chinese sauce or condiment you could find would be sesame oil. Many visitors to my house have been astounded at my lack of soy sauce. Can’t remember when was the last time I bought it but it was definitely over a decade ago. You’d probably think I were Indian based on the spices that I do keep!

And TP4, if you were having a word association test in Chinese (eg a Chinese language IQ test), what would you associate the name Bullhead with? Maybe these things have been lost in PRC Chinese culture, but if you said牛頭 I would always reply馬面. So to me the brand is terrible and 不吉利. (For those who don’t understand, Bullhead is a Death God in Chinese culture so you don’t want to be eating his stuff.) But of course these are associations that a Taoist or Buddhist would make, whereas a Communist Comrade might think differently. [Just checked Wiki and it says in Taiwan they are actually called 牛馬將軍 so I guess that’s why Taiwanese don’t have the same association.]

This makes me think about a recent alleged gaffe in Taiwan when a UK minister gave a watch to the Taipei mayor. But what’s wrong with giving a watch? It’s not a clock. It’s called Chiu Pio in Minnanese, which isn’t any negative homonym. Furthermore what some Chinese perceive as a Clock, is strictly speaking a Chinese Bell with an external clapper that you might ring during Taoist funeral rites. It shouldn’t apply to something from the West that works differently. Or am I simply too iconoclastic? I’ve given watches to people without incident, and also received watches from other people back in the days when I was a Casio watch geek.

Oh that was funny.

UK minister gave him a watch that has some sort of significance (only parliament members or something have this watch).
The major of Taipei (the one who received the watch) is basically a tactless *******.
He said something to the effect that he should sell the watch on a chinese version of ebay because who the **** wears watches anymore.

Clock has a negative connotation in Chinese because it's sounds similar to death, same with the number 4.
It's very ill mannered to give somebody a clock because of it's a bad luck (bull****) thing.
However, a wrist watch doesn't have that sound in Chinese so it doesn't apply at all. This basically doesn't exist at all for watches.
The UK I think out of politeness and probably other political reasons spun the story to save face.

To gift a clock or watch, you'd take a dollar in return so it becomes an exchange rather than a gift.
To gift a time keeping device without this feigned payment is seen as similar to 送終,which is to pay last respects ti the deceased (like a funeral)
The faked repayment erases this meaning of death

Being corrupt-as-f... is the Chinese way...

I feel like they underestimate themselves..

THAT...

or their party has fully been absorbed by Mainland powers, and they're merely decorative..

The latter case is likely because hey.. nukes.. it's better to be close to the closest nuclear capable country, in case the middle east implodes. and the US gets dragged further in.

Of course I know about送終
I like punning and often when speaking in Mandarin I also pun.
The point was that a chiu pio (watch) is not pronounced 送終.

As for KMT, I was a strong supporter of them back in the days then they were a democratic alternative. In the 1990s the opposition was really crap in Taiwan and full of crap. They literally had speeches talking about **** and piss (yes, I know it is ok in Hokkien, but when people who think in Hokkien speak in Mandarin, it sounds terrible). But now KMT is in hock to big businesses, and if President Heroic Nine Horses is permitted to run amuck, he’ll wind up like Lackey Leung of Hong Kong and this goes the last free place in the Chinese world.

I once pissed off a Taiwanese guy by saying that Taiwan won’t last much longer than東寧 (the old Taiwanese Ming loyalist kingdom). Reality is, China has succeeded very well in locking down the Taiwanese economy because PRC got the USA to derecognize Taiwan. This makes things hard for ROC. Unlike many countries, ROC can’t just establish direct flights, consulates, business treaties, etc. It is in a diplomatic no man’s land. So for the economy to do well, ROC is forced to bow to PRC, and this creates a systemic economic vulnerability/ dependency that I can’t see a way out of.

If other Asians were wiser, they should work with ROC. In particular Mongolia, Vietnam and Japan like to give PRC the middle finger whenever they can. They should fully recognize ROC and ignore the one China policy.

hahahaha......

I understand people's loyalties to their origin/ their identity..   but..  you should be aware that those things are forgotten and eroded quickly with every passing generation..

If such haze is to inevitably overcome any history,  why remain stubborn to begin with.

Taiwanese politics is much like the rest of South Asia..

Basically every LOCAL government wrestles with this 1 simple problem..

If we let Mainland China come, they'll buy everything and we'd be out of a country..

That is actually a fact, because if they DID let the mainland investors in.. it's all over.. LOL

So their alternative is to drag politics with the US,  this way they have able to keep the country their own, against China, which is staring down their door..

I guess if I had to put it in 1 sentence..  They don't want to become Singapore..
