Problems with assembling Ergodox
« on: Mon, 02 March 2015, 21:11:23 »
Hi all,

I got an Ergodox last year and finally decided to assemble it. I soldered everything on the right hand and the MCP IC on the left along with diodes. I flashed a layout on it but my laptop won't recognize any of the keys I press. I checked the solder and it seems to be fine. If someone can help me figure out a solution I will be eternally grateful.

Things I have tried:
- I can flash the Teensy with layouts and I tried running blinky on it and it worked.
- hig_listen just is stick on "waiting for devices..."
- I re-soldered the neutral (black) USB to the board to make sure it was properly connected (and now it hopefully is)
- When I plugin the right hand, LEDs don't light up.
- When I plugin the left hand into the right hand (after plugging right hand in) the LEDs light up at full power and stay on even if I unplug the left hand.
- I tried connecting the 2 end points a switch would connect on the left hand and the laptop still didn't see a key press.

Is there anything else I can try to debug this? I am thinking of re-soldering all pins of the Teensy tomorrow (or whenever I get time)

Thanks in advance

Check for continuity.

Thanks for replying! How do I do that? Rather which points do I do that on? Connect both ends of the diode and see if current flows? Should I check it for something else too?

So, I check for continuity between pins and b6 and b5 didn't have any voltage (with the other voltmeter pin on ground). I tried sw5:2 and it had 13mv when I pressed the button (I am assuming it needs to be more than that). The USB VCC and ground have 5V so that cannot be the problem.

I also tried attaching another diode to the switch (with line facing the rectangular hole) and pressed the button and it didn't work.

I dont see any obvious breaks in the connection so not sure what's happening.  Here is the image if that will help: http://postimg.org/image/4ma5hcp6p/

plug the cable directly into the teensy and test it alone

the left and right should be connected. prior to the PC connection.

I had tried that and it didn't work. I will try it again tonight just to be sure. Also, I am going to take my already built Ergodox home (from work ) so I can compare the differences between the two and see if anything pops up.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Ok. I plugged the cable directly into Teensy and tried. It was the same B5 and B6 did not have any voltage. Also, the other wise (the row where ground pin exists) also didn't have voltage. Does this mean the Teensy is faulty or my voltmeter is not reliable? Or could it be the PCB?

One thing I noticed was, B5 and B6 didn't have any voltage on my Ergodox that does work (one I built before this one). It, however, has voltage on the row that has the ground pin.

Oh, by the way if both hands are connected before connecting to the pc it doesn't make a difference. Keys still don't respond. I havent soldered the switches on the left hand but I soldered the IC, diodes and the TRRS connector. Does that make a difference?

are you using the massdrop configurator?

So the problem right now is, the whole keyboard is not being detected?

Yeah, I am using Massdrop's configurator.  I can flash the hex file successfully. So Teensy is recognized but maybe not as a keyboard. I ran blinky on Teensy and it worked but when I type something OSX doesn't  detect anything.
