What's your heritage?
« on: Fri, 06 March 2015, 22:08:45 »
I have a long standing joke that I got the worst of each of my heritages.  I'm mostly Italian, Welsh (or UKer), and have a smidge of Blackfoot in me and probably a few other who the **** knows.  Being the cursed one I am, I got the worst of each of my heritages:

  • Italian - Hairy as a mother****er...but not quite a bounty of back hair bad
  • Welsh/UK - Allergic to the sun.  I'm barely exaggerating when I say that 30 minutes of unprotected exposure to the sun will make my skin blister.
  • Blackfoot - Can't hold my alcohol.  Tonight, for example, I had one 22oz beer at 8 or 9% and I'm feeling it.  I get drunk off of a two shots.  If I were a female, I'd be a cheap date.  As a guy, I'm too drunk too quick.

Am I really white then?  Am I a race traitor (if such a thing exists)?

My mom's from Taiwan and my dad's from Hong Kong. I was raised in Canada and i'm living in Japan.

Soooo, Chinese, but with some local ethnic variation?

Calling all white people who claim Native American heritage.  Are we allowed to talk about being oppressed?  I mean, I always hear the 1/256th generic Native American kid in my classes bring up his heritage and how it really impacts him.

I'm Filipino and Chinese. But looking at me you'd think was was full blown Chinese. My great grandmother on my Filipino side was pure Spanish, and I also got some French and Chinese ancestry on my Filipino side as well.

1/8 Danish
1/16 Scottish
1/16 English, I think (I should check)
The rest is mostly Swedish for many generations, as far as I know. A tiny tiny bit of the French royal line from the middle ages, but other than that no famous ancestor.

If anything it looks great on college apps.  :-X

One of my high school classmates traces his lineage all the way back to the earliest colonialists and is directly descended from Nathaniel Boone - old blood, rich blood. Blonde hair blue eyes, Benz ML500 at 16, poster boy of privilege. He was also something like 1/256 Native American and milked this fact on his college applications. Not sure how but he based his personal statement on that 1/256 heritage and how much adversity he faced throughout his life (daddy didn't buy him the Porsche he wanted I guess). Got into Yale with a 13XX/1600 SAT and middling class rank.

I was 15XX/1600, great class rank, state athlete, super involved in community service, 100% [model] minority... Shot down at all Ivies (well... waitlisted at Cornell). Ended up going to state school and wasting my life away as a result of excessive partying and computer games (as is the fate of 50% of students at my alma mater). Sigh... Such is life.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

i understand, i keep one friend of every race so i can be racist as hell.
BTW, geneticists don't divide humans into different races.
The differences in the genomes of different people with different skin colour are too small to classify humans into races. They can sometimes be smaller than the differences between some people with the same skin colour.

There is one human race. The last other race was the Neanderthal ... although some people claim to have seen Sasquatch.. ;)

Pretty much pure Anglo, mostly from Oxfordshire and surrounding regions or lowland Scots, but >90% of my ancestors have been here since before the Revolution. After their arrival here, they lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, and after the Revolution migrated west to East Tennessee and Central Kentucky.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."
