Australia. There are two, maybe even three stores in this country that sell mechs. Business is so good.

Tokyo or Seoul, I would guess. Sure as hell not China (which is a complete pain in the ass to find things in).

If anyone has pointers for more esoteric stores (i.e. non-Cherry) in Taipei, that would be most welcome because I'm there in a couple of days.

I think it's a bad idea to seek stuff in travels

It would probably be a better idea if you enjoy the journey with family instead

If you decide on what KB to get, you could also start seeking people that are coming back from US and that can carry them for you, I used to do it
Now with the current state of international commercialism, I just order almost anything directly, which is just great

This is true. HK has stores that carry Ducky, KUL, Corsair, RF and the Novatouch (Topre is silly expensive here though), Cherry, Leopold, Filco, Poseiden (whatever that is), and of course the preeminent keyboard for male teenagers everywhere, the JiZZ (see https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69193).

The downside is that it's a bit tricky to find these stores, but if you do make it here I can provide directions.

If you also like computer and gaming stuff, Akihabara in Toyko is the place to be.

Hong Kong is also good, but Akihabara is hard to beat. Taiwan is not bad too.

Been there three times myself :)

Argh!  Argh!  There's a flood of sarcasm!  We're all drowning

Actually there's a few more than 2 or 3 places that sell mechanical keyboards, but most places seem to stock only Razor and Thermaltake kinda boards.

But only 2 or 3 that specialise in mechanical keyboards.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Ive been to Yongsan in Korea looking specifically for mechanical keyboards, and it was a great adventure. A good fraction of the stores Ive came across had cherry keyboards but only two specific shops with topre boards. Majority of the big names(Razer, CM, Ducky, etc) can be found along with some small time Korean companies making mechanical keyboards. The best thing about Yongsan is that they have PC peripherals on display for visitors to try them out but TBH wherever you plan on going if youre looking for variety and price I would stick with online shopping.
Here is picture of one of the shops that carry/display some topre boards.
