Any of you have ever stayed in a mental hospital?
« on: Fri, 10 April 2015, 00:46:30 »
Reading the latest TeePee thread, I find myself asking this question.

I mean, I really want to know what it is like to be TeePee. To live in his mental world. To think like TeePee.

Do share your experiences!

I'd love some of whatever Tp is taking.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Ok, so I grabbed some and tried. I'm three packs in, my nose is bleeding, and I'm pretty sure I just killed a dude. Maybe a dox would help but I don't have one.

I've thus far only ever tried to save the world.

As for killing a person directly.. I've not done that.. I don't really even like to think about all the excess chicken-protein I ate to gain "vanity-muscle" (college)..

And I don't do particularly well at the sight of blood..  I'm the chicken **** who always turn away during my yearly checkups as the nurse draws blood.

In many ways.. it's as spock's said, we all live on death..   My continued existence is an expense.  All my computer stuff built by the hands factory worker, designed by engineers, who all trade their life.

To date, I've not truly contributed to humanity in a meaningful way..

But I am trying. To generate positive time-wealth for all those currently alive..

I remember when i was little,  the blood test was just this very small hypodermic needle..

NOW, it's this Giant 1.5mm needle in this self drawing tube..

How could I not be scared..

Everyone pretends to be brave on the internet..  But come checkup time.. some people faint at the sight..   At least I just turn away.. I wouldn't faint if I caught a glimpse of it.

I've never stayed in one, but I go into therapeutic residential centers (TRCs), institutions for mental diseases (IMDs), state hospitals, acute psychiatric units at hospitals, and psychiatric wings of jails as part of my job.

And what have you learned by visiting these places?

  • You never want to be in one if you don't have to.  Unless you're in a super nice expensive one, they absolutely suck.  Even then, they probably suck
  • You can't ever tell what someone is like just based upon a visit with them.  You can know they're schizoaffective, schizophrenic, major depressive, bipolar and so on, but some of the friendliest, nicest people you meet in the facilities are also the scariest.
  • Crazy runs in families.  Oftentimes the only difference between the people in the facilities and their family outside is that the family member can somehow function on the outside.
  • The system is set up for failure.  There's an emphasis on rehabilitation in the facilities, but there's no real support system on the outside.
  • A dark sense of humor is almost necessary in the facilities.
  • The movies get them wrong.  Outside of the state hospitals and prisons, the facilities are typically quieter and not as crazy and hectic as the movies make them seem.
  • Mental illness is scary.  You don't realize how intense some of these people's lives are until you hear them telling stories and going on about their delusions, paranoias, and hallucinations.

Not necessarily.  Some of the mental institutions are worse than prison and you can end up in a mental institution for longer than your prison sentence would have been.

Oh for sure..  recidivism is guaranteed business for State prisons.. And it's in an area of the social agenda that EVERYONE is "OK" with covering up and ignoring..  That's a shame because our prison system ruin lives that could otherwise operate at near fully capacity with a little compassion and understanding..

Now as for mental institutions, they're essentially prisons all the same.. It's probably harder to prove that you're now SANE than the fact that You're Not-guilty and didn't steal that vase..

This is a vicious cycle that never ends. The for profit mental hospitals are creating their own future customers.

That said, sometimes after reading TP's posts, I think I need a stint in one of these places myself... my sense of reality gets distorted and all that.

What level do you work at?  Acute, TRC, IMD?

Well, most of them still let you smoke, just not indoors.  Acute doesn't allow smoking, but sub-acute does, at least in Southern California.

Mental hospital no, psych ward, yes, multiple times, depression is a miserable ***** of a disease.

It's a horrible place. Nobody there wants to be there. Not the patients, not the nurses, not the doctors, nobody.

They vary greatly. Some let you have your cellphone, some don't, some have groups you can go to during the day, some are pretty much just holding tanks.

Sometimes people have been there a long time.

Sometimes you get lucky and don't have a roommate.

It's not at all a therapeutic environment. The food is bad, the lighting is bad, you don't get to go outside, the company is as crazy as you are, most of the nurses are too jaded to give a ****, the doctor sees you for about five minutes a day on weekdays and usually is someone who berates you and doesn't care, and you usually end up feeling more like dying while you're there than you did when you went in. If you're overweight at all you'll go days at a time in the same scrubs because they will not have your size in the ward and won't care enough to get it from another floor. If you're autistic you will get overwhelmed and you will have a meltdown at at least one point. This is probably beneficial, because then they sedate you and you can sleep for a day or so, although you get the shot in your ass so it's embarrassing when it happens, but those things put you out like a light in less than five minutes so you aren't embarrassed about it long. You will make pointless art projects. You will hate at least one of your fellow patients. You will also become friends with at least one of your fellow patients, at least for the duration of your stay, because it's one of the very few places where everyone is as crazy as you are and nobody is judging you for it for once.

Yeah. Try not to go crazy. It's not fun.

The thread is about mental hospitals. I was merely trying to understand TP better.

I will be creating a new thread specifically to understand TP better.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

How is that even possible for somebody that strives to be Gutz.
I mean if you were that gay angel guy I would understand.

Would you say an excursion in the form of farm life in the country would be better. Away from the complications

Sounds like a hell of place.  We do a pretty ****ty job with mental health in this country.  I'll just keep hanging out on the autism spectrum, the food is better.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Are you talking about the "prejudiced" form of country females (under-educated),   or are you using that in the "cultural sense" as in females with country values ?

I agree that a few weeks of sunshine and fresh air and exercise, away from the stresses of civilization and artificial chemicals, would probably do all of us a lot of good.

Also no computer keyboards and fresh leaves for both tp and tissue would be invigorating.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."
