Finally saw Ex Machina
« on: Sun, 17 May 2015, 02:26:20 »
So,  Ex Machina would mean,  "of the" machine,  or "the machine"

I believe this movie was too human in its exploration of robotics..

It is filled with Human-needs, aspirations that a robotic being would neither rationally possess nor deduce..

I need to rent that at red box or something.. It looks good.

On another note, I'm going to go see Mad Max: Fury Road in the cinemas here soon.  :D

I didn't like the Original Mad Max movie either.. So I'm weary about spending a harsh $15 on a ticket to see this new one.

Ex Machina bluray is out on Arrgh-Box if you're interested in seeing it outside of theaters.

It's not an Action movie, despite the exciting trailer music, haha..

It's a sit and listen movie.

Haha I quite liked this movie  :p

The title was obviously truncated from the latin expression Deus Ex Machina so it's not reallly misleading in light of its definition.

EDIT : Yeah I know, Latin is often said to be an old or even a dead language but it can be useful from time to time !

never seen the original Mad Max either, but the new trailers don't get me much, I guess that was because I'm not a fan of the ideas of extreme-survival-post-apocalypse things (I hate zombie bs too)

The first Mad Max movie is not worth watching. The second ("The Road Warrior") and third ("Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome") are classics.

I think all of them are fantastic, classics in their own rights.

And I have heard nothing bad about the new film! I'm pumped.  :D

6.5/10

Proz:

Good Cgi

Good maintenance of tension

Cons:

Plot holes

Science dumbed down for Novice-Sci-Fi watchers.

Plot-twist was weak/ pointless/ doesn't make sense

Lack of Action

Overall, I'd say Skip, if you've watched alotta Scifi anime, ghost in the shell (that stuff)

Otherwise

Shelf it for when you have a train ride and nothing else to watch..

I'd like to think I have an eye for films considering I'm getting near 3000-3500 movies watched.. (depending on what counts as a movie)

Ex Machina is a classic Sci Fi novella.   Appealing best to 14 year old boys.   It easily be mistaken for an early Asimov short story.

None of the confusion of Kubrick's interpretation of Clarke's 2001 yet similar in a few ways.

Stark, simple plot.   Lot's of underlying cultural commentary.   A refreshing view of AI.

Was it any good?  Hard to judge.   I appreciated it for what it was.

I think this is how classic Sci-Fi is best delivered but most will miss the lack of explosions and sound track.

As someone who's not seen it, it looks like another 'Under the Skin' a terrible art movie that does a poor job of nearly everything it tires to accomplish.

Do we really need more movies about are robots human? what does it mean to be human?? Blade Runner pretty much did all that, with far more grace, talent and style. But I could be wrong, it's just everything I've seen has lead me to this conclusion.

I legit don't like Scarlet Johnson, the only good thing he has ever been in was Lost in Translation, in which she was great to be fair... but that was pretty much it.

Well........  I think it's kind of Art-House like -baldgye- said.

It's wasn't really a serious sci-fi film..

Because Aliens just wouldn't do that...  it's an overly complicated investment for the miniscule payoff..

I'd file it under "watch when drunk"..

Now,  Ex Machina,   is definitely a Sci-Fi film..   but it's been very much watered down for the n0vices to BEGIN to think about existence and awareness.
