Dayum, that Audi and the Nissan look awesome. I'm going to see if I can watch these on my phone...

Edit: damn, missed the session.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Rich amateurs.

There is a local team that races a GT3 Aston, I'm not sure if they are competing this year but they have in previous years gone to Le Mans, for a drive it costs (for a back marker Indy GT3 team) about £500,000 in sponsorship money.

The lap times are pretty insane, last year's pole was a 3:21:something and the first flying lap was a 3:16:something lmao

Yeah, I watched it until the end, they were talking about 5 mandatory night laps, so I'm assuming they have to do day laps too.

In terms of qualifying as well, is it really that beneficial to get pole?

Well, what you want is to have all of your cars at the front so you can control the pace and manage the other teams at the start.
It's not super important but it's a big help and can limit any lap 1 incidents, it's also good for publicity

What I did think last night, why do both Porsche and Audi enter, when they are both owned by the same company? Hmmm.

It's almost like Audi is coming to the end of it's WEC period and maybe moving on to... different pastures? (having broken and set all kinds of insane records for Le Mans and WEC and it's preceding series incarnations)

There are some talks about Audi going to Formula 1 as engine supplier. The previous Audi president (who resigned some weeks ago) was against it because of a personal feud with Bernie Ecclestone, but now there are some who say that it is a strong possibility now.

I'm preparing myself for this race, in 2011 I've watched 14 of the 24 hours of the race. It's my personal record. :D

Although Audi have categorically denied that they will join F1. But I would like to see them there. There was a discussion about that in the F1 thread.

Someone is coming back to Le Mans next year. Someone big.

Oh shiiiiiiiit. Does that mean... Ferrari? Soon?

The rebirth of Ford vs Ferrari.

Powerhouses back in motorport... I love it...

Edit: OK, the CGI driving around Paris was excessive.

it's not always suppose to be close,  that's why it has a retraction mechanism.

The fact that all of that adds weight. These things aren't heavy, and more weight only adds more time to your lap.

yea but if you're going up even a slight incline, and there's a curvature to the road, a lengthy piece like that would undoubtedly touch the ground.

But to preserve optimal performance, it ALSO has to be close when conditions permit.

But for the one or two sections where it would need to be slightly higher, for a slight improvement, for a fraction of a second, they have to weigh that with losing seconds due to the added weight.

It's not an argument,  I'm just assuming they did the math.. and this works.

It's not retractable because:

1. Movable aero devices are illegal
2. It would add massive weight for no advantage. It's flush with the whole underside of the car, which has to be a legal limit from the ground. They have tire pressures and suspension to help it not hit the ground

does it go up and down at all?

Those arn't pistons then?

are they, or is that kinda like a hack, where you say , yea the moving stuff is for the suspension,  but then tape the diffuser to it. hahahaha

Big crash for the #8 Audi, entering a yellow zone and can across an Aston doing about 30mph, damaged part of the armco on the side of the straight which brought out the safety car so they can repair it!

The amazing modular design of Audi's aero though means that it was back out without loosing a lap!
