Viewed strictly as a 'realistic' show there's bound to be some disappointment. It's essentially modern day fantasy. Not sure how else it's meant to be viewed as it's clearly directed as an alternate reality most of which is viewed through the main character's own distorted impressions, mindset, and delusions.
It has stereotypes, cliches, and some unconvincing supporting roles and they are definitely the weakest parts. The Anonymous-lookalike stylings, 'Mr. Robot' revelation, 'AFK' drops, using freenode for communicating with Chinese hackers, among others are all eye-roll worthy. Also strange is the blend of real brands and references within the otherwise alternate world they've created.
And yet I still found the sound design, cinematography and direction engrossing to see play out and overcome the lesser problems I had with it, if anything that's the series strength. It's like an extended dream sequence that keeps rolling.
