Old Graphics cards
« on: Mon, 19 October 2015, 21:40:01 »
Hey guys, Mr. Squishy here. I'll start off by saying that my other hobby other than keyboard collecting is building computers! I've been building for about 2 years now, and I know a portion of the GH community are also computer enthusiasts. So, I was curious, what do you guys do with your old GPU's? Do you sell them or keep them? Or maybe give them to friends? personally I keep all of mine because I like collecting them. I'm currently on the hunt for a reference GTX 480 for battlestation decor (if anybody has a working one for cheap hit me up.) How about you guys?

I've got several old systems, but mainly because I never got rid of them.  I look for older graphics cards just to give older systems a kick in the pants they never dreamed of.  Like putting a 512MB PCI card in an old Pentium Pro system.

I usually keep the graphics cards, and any other PCI card. I've kept a processor or two. I have an insane amount of hard drivesm good and bad, I never get rid of them unless I get them destoyed. Usually the MoBo gets tossed. Though I've got a few of those kicking about too.

My current collection consists of a 3870x2, 2 Dell 5670's (they are Dell because they came from an Alienware), an HD 7750 Ghost, and I have a GTX 460 in the mail. I used to have a 650ti boost but I gave it to a friend (I'm gonna get it back for sentimental reasons though) As I said though, I'd love to pick up one of those sexy GTX 480's.

I kind of need an old graphics card. I'm using an old system that someone gave me for a little while, until I get the cash for a new system. It's an okay system, it just needs a graphics card.

I have an EVGA Nvidia 8800GT kicking around here some place. It is pretty old (from 2007, I think) but I'll send it to you if you want it. Old stuff deserves a good home too! I'd just need to find it.

That'd be pretty great. Someone I know had some virus and didn't want to deal with it and just gave me the PC, I just installed Linux mint and it was all good. I'll throw $15 your way or something, if you'd like.

It's not a bad little PC for being free and all.  :))

Linux Mint is great. It runs fantastic on all manner of hardware. Good stuff!  Send me a PM when you have the address, and I will send it your way. That will give me time to find it too.  :thumb:

If I ever replace a card I'll let you know what I do with the old one.  :))

All of my "old" cards are still sitting in the machine they were originally installed in, and I use them semi-regularly.  Yes, even the machines that are 10+ years old.  :P

I have had these on ebay, just to get them out of the house.

$12 shipped to Geekhackers in the US.

I love the GH community!  So generous to help each other out.  :thumb:

If anyone is looking for PCI-E graphics cards on the cheap, the CDW outlet usually has a ton of them in every price range.  The only ones that are hard to find are the PCI ones which I need. :(

This is very tempting.  I have a UPS account so I can cover shipping, so how much without shipping?

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Right now I've got a 6870 (with a big Arctic Cooling aftermarket sink that blocks three slots) and a 770 spare... along with a GTS450 that came out of a PC I pulled out of a dustbin.

The desktop has a 390, and the family spare machines have a 660 and a HD3650.

That's a pretty good variety! My secondary machine has crossfire 6870's, they are pretty great cards. Do you know what the original cooler on it was? one of mine is the shiny silver Gigabyte Windforce one and the other one is a single fan Sapphire Flex.

I had that goal at one point too.  But then I realized others are doing it better than me.  So at some point I'll probably sell everything I have that I don't have a personal attachment to.

Looool. The gigabyte one I have has 3 beefy heatpipes and 3 fans. It's super quiet. The sapphire one is okay I guess.

Yes unless you had a weird fan setup which basically no cases support without modding or if they're very obscure, if someone can find a popular case to make me feel stupid go ahead.

Actually it shouldn't make any real difference since the heatsink is on the underside of the card and flat when installed in a tower case. In fact it may even be better the way it is since you need air FLOW to get effective cooling, both in and out. Inflow is blocked by the motherboard and socket if it's vertical. Anyway they didn't need much cooling, so...

it really hacks my wallet,

my collection stopped growing when goodwill ceased sales of any computer hardware.

LOOK AT THAT TINY HEAT SPREADER ITS SO CUTE

Wouldn't air flow better if the fins were vertical?
Yes unless you had a weird fan setup which basically no cases support without modding or if they're very obscure, if someone can find a popular case to make me feel stupid go ahead.

Actually it shouldn't make any real difference since the heatsink is on the underside of the card and flat when installed in a tower case. In fact it may even be better the way it is since you need air FLOW to get effective cooling, both in and out. Inflow is blocked by the motherboard and socket if it's vertical. Anyway they didn't need much cooling, so...
Oh I know those ones didn't generate much heat but that is just assuming if it did get hot. Also air going through the fins is better than against the fins.

But do you have any microchannel cards?

That would be interesting, and also EISA.  Hmmm.  I don't believe I have any anymore.

I would have loved to keep my EVGA GTX 570 HD.  Unfortunately EVGA required me to send it back during the RMA process.  I guess I'll forgive them as they sent me a GTX 960 FTW edition that now carries the same lifetime warranty.

If I ever get another card and upgrade to another PC I'll more than likely just use them for backups.

Ah yes EISA.  And don't forget VLB!  That was all the rage for a while.

I remember just once finding a EISA/PCI/VLB motherboard.  Short of microchannel, it could take anything.

I really don't understand why PCI just didn't put itself on the end of the existing card format like vlb did.  It was so stupid to change all the slots.  Luckily, a lot of manufacturers figured out how to make a slot dual purpose and had ISA/PCI combo slots where either card would work.  My IBM Pentium Pros have those.

Mine either get passed down the line in the computer family, or get given away to friends in need of an upgrade (though its been a few years now since my last upgrade, my card is still holding strong, albeit quickly heading for the graveyard of obsolescence).

What card is the one in question?

Also, I found a GTX 460 2win on Ebay. I'd buy it immediately if not for the price.

That still is a very capable card. I have 2 6870's in one of my rigs.

Haha I still wouldn't buy it for $100. One of those is only worth like $60 to me.

I hope the measly 400W (or so) PSU in the PC can handle a 9800 GT or 8800 GT Under load.  :-\
