As i move into likely buying my second HHKB soon and see the low cost of squaretrade plans offered via Amazon i have to wonder should a natural mechanical defect occur (yes i'm THAT guy who is always that unlucky) if it would be worth having one of these plans since they are fairly cheap and getting a HHKB serviced short of buying it through EK could/would be a virtual nightmare.

Anyone ever bought one of their plans for a keyboard and ever actually used it?  Did they actually repair the board or just shell out the purchase price of the board itself?

Iv'e both used/bought/sold Squaretrade warranties before and had generally good experiences with the company but with something like a mechanical keyboard or something even more niche like a Topre i'm not quite should if it's worth it or not....and how they would go about handling it honestly.

Cheers

Not worth it on things not likely to "break"

It's unlikely i agree, however my experiences with Topre are still relatively new compared to Cherry switch based boards (of which i have had two break on me in the past)   Has anyone actually seen a report of a broken Topre board here before?  Short of someone being overly abusive with the connector or USB hub on the HHKB's.

Let's take a step back and look at it from the mechanical point of view.

There's no -heat- ..

It isn't exposed to large impact forces ..

It is well regarded in terms of quality-craftsmanship ..

Now,  correlate that to the OTHER products you've purchased in your life..  How many of those have just suddenly broken..

Ontop of that, since you are a gamer, the HHKB is not going to be your primary anyway..  which means it won't even meet usage conditions under which it's been through MTBF validation.

-Further,  if you're on geekhack,  you're probably gonna play with it for all of a month, put it on the shelf and buy another keyboard..

Some fair points :p

Though the HHKB currently is my main keyboard both for gaming and otherwise,i actually like the 60% boards for gaming since i don't play RTS games all that often.  Still you are likely right in the long run and it's just my mind over thinking things...any major problem that would arise would most likely do so within the amazon window for a return.

I buy several of my boards there for a few reasons but the biggest two

1. I can more or less select when it will arrive to my doorstep so i can arrange it with when i will be home precisely(which changes weekly and is usually only one day).  Something EK/MK websites don't really offer.

2. The no extra cost of two day shipping having PRIME is very nice given how slow some places ship or the additional shipping costs
