Help me update my PC for the 1070

So with the 1080 and 1070 coming out I've finally decided it's time to upgrade my PC, I've known it was coming for awhile after news the the AMD processor I have wasn't actually performing at the advertised rates, and that their whole "virtual core" was bs and so on and so forth but I've just been waiting until something big came along to motivate my pockets, and the 1070 happens to be that.

I want to upgrade to a Intel CPU and the 1070 for a GPU, I realize that in doing so I'll also need up grade my Mobo, and likely my ram, I was thinking about trying out overclocking and as such am interested in the i5 6600k and the i7 6700k but after reading a few websites haven't been able to decide if the i7 is worth the extra money.  I primarily use the computer for high end gaming and some photoshop, but am likely going to invest in a VR (Vive) setup soon.  Here's what I came up with already but cant decide on what memory is best for me and am open to suggestions on all fronts!

The new gtx10 line looks very promising, especially for virtual reality! I'm not sure if it is enough of a power boost for normal gaming to consider upgrading from the 700 line, but it is very tempting!

Based on the usage you described you should be just fine with the i5 6600k.  I'm still waiting for prices to come down, but another component to keep an eye on for future proofing is the PCI-E solid state drive.

If the IPC performance increase is as they say,  then depending on the price,  AMD might be a better deal..

I recon that it will be at least six months before you will be able to buy an AMD Zen, and by then Kaby Lake is already out from Intel.
There is always new hardware on the horizon.

If I were to buy a new motherboard and CPU now, I would also buy new DDR4 memory. Otherwise you could be bottlenecked by your memory speed in some circumstances.

DDR3 is not bottle necked..  But it is not future proof..

We've only recently gotten the Better ddr4 3000+ speed memories.. everything from ddr4 2000-3400 is actually about the same as ddr3 2400 which we've had for a long long time.


So you want the highest ddr4 you can find..

Still going back and forth between the 1080, and the 1070 however I think I'll likely go with the 1070 because from what I've heard it packs  a similar punch for a lot less but I'm waiting until 3rd party companies start selling and there are some more definitive bench marks.  Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes by rushing things !

I think you will be just fine.  Those parts are quite stout and will give you good performance for years to come. 

As far as the gpu, I would definitely wait for the 3rd party boards to come out and go for a 1070 depending on how it fares with the upcoming RX480.  This should not be an issue since you are waiting for the Non-Founders Ed. to come out anyways. I find it hard to spend double and get 10-20% or so more performance.  From what I have been reading, the overclocks that they are claiming may be voltage limited, so you might as well go with a cheaper 3rd party board that will have large quiet fans and a factory overclock and leave it be.  Your case is huge, so there is no issue with sizing.

Don't get 6600k.. get the 6700k

Also budget in the Delid tool kit.. makes 20Celcius difference for overclocking..
