Mx Clear Board with the least pinging?
« on: Fri, 24 June 2016, 15:26:12 »
After doing some research on mx clear boards it seems that complaints in regards to pinging occur quite frequently. For example, the WASD Code was cited very often as one of the worst offenders and I would like to avoid all keyboards like these if possible. That said, what would you guys recommend for someone like me who finds pinging very distracting? And do you think a pcb mounted keyboard might be the best option (seeing as they do not have a vibrating metal plate underneath)?

Perhaps a Pok3r might ping less since it has an overall smaller plate & a more rigid case, as well.

Great, thank you for the response, I'll definitely consider that! Have you tested the pok3r out before?

I love 'em. I have two Pok3rs, one with Clears. Don't ask me about pinging, though. I'm immune to it or I don't recognize it or I can't hear it, I don't know which. I wouldn't know a pinging keyboard if you beat me over the head with it.

I started with a Model F so I guess I might be immune to pinging as well :p

AFAIK my 9009 had no pinging whatsoever.
Check my keyboard video reviews:

So true, it let's everyone know you are using a Special Keyboard  :thumb: .

To the Op, if you don't like noise then why purchase a mechanical keyboard in the first place?

Oh no, I genuinely love the noise of mechanicals! In fact, the beautiful sound of the mx clears is precisely why I've decided to purchase it in the first place. However, I feel that the the harsh metallic pinging that comes afterwords tends to ruin or take away from those pleasant key activating sounds. That said, does anyone have any other tkl/60% keyboard recommendations other than the pok3r?

My WASD Code has a ringing/pinging sound.  It is more pronounced with the feet extended.  For this reason, I won't use it with the feet out at work.
I also have a POK3R with clears. I don't notice any ping sound. In my opinion, the POK3R is higher quality in every way.

I don't  remember any ping on my pok3r, but I ergo modded it the second day I had it, so I can't be sure.

Maybe I am deaf, but I just got a Code 87 w/MX Clears and I do not notice any pinging. In fact it is a very quiet board with a satisfying muted sound.

I said before that I couldn't go with a Code or WASD because I use my menu key AND media controls but tbh, I could just map my menu function to scroll lock ;D

That has been rumored to cause the most ping..   Should reconsider.

I adore my original Deck Legend made "for me" in Kenosha,WI but it is very loud. Especially if I bottom out if you can imagine that. I find it much better than MX Blue though. I hate the click indent and they are way too light for me. I do also love the sound. Much better sound than Blue that sound cheap to me. Again though, plenty loud. The case is very solid these switches are just loud if you ask me. I much prefer it to my second favorites 104UG by RealForce and IBM model M. I have multiples of all three but my deck is special because they built it while they were giving me a tour of the facility plus made me a custom keycap. Anyways, I still say the clears are just very loud. Most certainly if you bottom out on a metal PCB as I already said. Although even though I sometimes do you have to be a disaster at typing to bottom these out. In fact you probably do not belong with a mechanical keyboard if you do. J/K. Seriously though Topre is much quieter than any Cherry switch if you like that feel. I prefer the stiffer, uniform 104UG which is as close to the clears as you will get from them but not that close IMO.

I hate pinging.

My Pok3r with Browns has no ping at all.
Sadly, my Ducky Shine 3 has 3 or 4 keys that ping (mx blue). It's not just about the board, but the batch of switches.

How do any of you think that mx clears are "loud" or "pingy"? you obviously never used a model F :p

Lining the bottom of my green Alps64 with sorbothane has really helped reduce the pinging sound. In general, would lubing springs with Victorinox help reduce the it?

My CODE with MX clears doesn't ping.  There is a slight musical note that reminds me of wind chimes if I'm listening for it, but definitely not the extreme pinging that I have seen videos of.

I recommend everyone get tinnitus like I got from being in the LA Punk scene since 1979, shooting firearms and riding motorcycles...all with out hearing protection.

Those pesky pinging sounds from keyboards and your wife will not be an issue.  :D
