This is old now... and we'll rather want to forget, but anyway ...

About the hate:
1. It is not so much about the movie itself as how Sony, the director, the producer some cast members and their cronies have been insulting critics. Name-calling. If you think US politics is bad now ... these people were the precursor.
The low water-mark was when after a Youtuber said simply that he was not interested in seeing or reviewing the movie that several of the directors' friends started posting slurs against him calling him a woman-hater among other things and even insulted his wife for having married him.
2. Lots of criticism against the trailer when it came out. It was bad. Shoddy workmanship. Worse than the movie, from what I have heard. Most legitimate criticism in Youtube comments to the trailer were deleted by Sony, but leaving comments from *******s thus making it seem like most criticism was unfounded.
3. People are generally angry about remakes of classic movies. Nobody asked for this. The original holds up, is better and has more charm.

Hrrrrrmmm

All good points..

But Let's be honest..   The real reason people probably didn't like watching this movie, is because it stars 3 ugly old women, and 1 slightly attractive old woman.

Oldwomenh8... hahahahhaha... something no one really wants to watch.. or associate with their favorite-anything

Personally I find Kate McKinnon to be very talented, the best person at Saturday Night Live recently but the other three women are very much overrated.
If this wasn't a remake of Ghostbusters and there hadn't been a controversy, I still would not have gone to see the movie.
The director and Kristen Wiig had done Bridesmaids, which I had found to be a disappointment. Or maybe it is because I just don't like toilet-humour and bleakness. I didn't laugh once.

the original .... has more charm.

On the rare occasion a remake improves on the original, and the proportion has probably inched up slightly in recent decades, but 90% of them are still stupid and useless.

"Charm" is the single most important quality that most of them lack.
“No political truth is of greater intrinsic value, or is stamped with the authority of more enlightened patrons of liberty: The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands .… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison, Federalist 47
“All the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judiciary, result to the legislative body. The concentrating of these in the same hands, is precisely the definition of despotic government. An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for; but one .... in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among several bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits, without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” — Thomas Jefferson, commentary on Federalist 48

Kate McKinnon didn't look good at all without her normal makeup.. very plain jane.. but I suppose that's the point to not upset the balance of the rest of the cast..

also... you watched, bridesmaids? hahahaha...
